Can't believe we dropped Phillips. What does that bloke have to do to keep a spot? Especially with Levi out, we could have played one of Kreuzer/Phllips forward. He is a pretty good shot for goal and has been excellent in the ruck. Bolts must have short man syndrome ;-p

If he was 15cm shorter and an elite user of the football with excellent competitiveness and elite strength, speed, and endurance he would fit pretty well in our midfield

People are looking for rain to slow the game down to Carlton levels of foot speed - clearly Bolton has consulted the weather bureau and sees not a big chance of it - fortunately a couple of faster movers are available including a debut for Lang - congratulations young man.

Lang and Charlie are both big ins for Carlton this week - no surprises to see Kennedy out since he was rumoured to be playing withe the aid of pain killing injections. Lamb is probably a tad more useful as a defending forward than SOJ or a resting Phillips - both of whom are named as emergencies.
Importantly, Bolton and co have kept a semblance of more developed bodies as midfield rotations in Kerridge and Graham especially with Murphy still out and Kennedy 'omitted'. So at the margin more speed with Lang and Charlie and even Lamb who is on the slow side for a forward.

I'm sorry for big Joe Daniher's injury but his absence offsets some of the cost of losing Casboult for Carlton. EssenDONE keep more developed and experienced structure whilst Carlton are now looking to HarryMcKay and Charlie to do the heavy lifting up forward. I think EssenDONE look like they have a better forward line capability - Fantasia is a strong inclusion for them and will cause headaches if he is any kind of form. I'm relaxed with Wright's smarts but not very impressed with Garlett's exposed form or Lamb as a goal kicking forward. I think Essendon have Carlton covered in their defensive 50 .

So it will boil down to an arm wrestle in the midfield - all eyes on Cripps and ( again) fingers crossed that SPS/Fisher/Dow/Lob do some really good things.

I wish Daniher was in - he's been playing garbage football.

IMHO McKernan is one of the most underrated players in the league.

He's stuck behind Bellchambers, Hooker, Hurley and Daniher but does well every time he gets an opportunity.

Um,

Phillips managed only 7 possessions last week and gave away 3 free kicks. Kreuzer scraped 11 disposals and also gave away 3 free kicks. Between them, they managed 1 mark. Game might be wet. they also together managed 3 clangers which comes off their low disposal count.

Don't think we want two this week based on that. So then it is a choice. That choice is debatable while Kreuzer is playing sore. I still choose Kreuzer tho.

My biggest worry is the players think they are a chance. More likely to then turn up and put in a stinker.

Just want to see manic pressure and hard in and under. Want good tackle numbers. Do that and we are a chance.

Have my doubts though.....

Only one ruckman these days. He stood up well with kruezer out but shouldn't have played last week and got dropped this week.

Unfortunately for ruckman, only one per game and need more tricks if you are going to play 2. Kruezer has more tricks, Phillips doesnt. Can't play both. Good backup though.

Yeah he'll give them more than what Danniher had been with his injury. I wish they'd have kept Danniher in.

Remember when we got ahead of ourselves before the GC game because of a 20 something point loss to Richmond? ;)

Something i find interesting is i don't really recall Bolts talking much in his pressers about pressure and tackling...he doesn't bring it up really.

Whereas i do hear some other coaches reference them as KPI's...for example i keep hearing Richmond players mention that they celebrate and focus on defensive pressure, tackling, blocks, all those things that help and support your teammates rather than how many goals or disposals you get - that culture helped turned them into premiers.

I don't hear that from our players/coaches...our focus seems to be more about teaching the players gameplan, structure, offensive/defensive balance etc...which i also understand. As our players start to learn those things and it becomes second nature to them, then the immediate focus can be more around defensive pressure and ferocious tackling.

Is this right?

Defenders like O Shea, Rowe, Jones and Plowman have high 1 percenter averages per game - league wide.

1%ers mean there is dedicated focus on doing the hard things for the benefit of the team.

So I think you are wrong. The coaches give them stuff to focus on, the players try hard at it. Ultimately, At AFL level intensity, the players just arnt that ....
