Pick 1 Lalor - injured twice - 10/13 games.
Pick 6 Smillie - injured twice - 0 games
Pick 12 Hotton - coming off injury - 0 games
Pick 14 Faull - 9 games.
Pick 21 Trainor - 13 games.
Pick 23 Armstrong - injured - 4 games.
Pick 28 Sims - 5 games.
Pick 58 Alger - 0 games.

An average of 5 games out of 13. Through injury and a lesser extent selection, we arent getting enough games into the core of our future.

Alger needs to debut stat. And keep Faull, Sims and Trainor in unless they need a short rest.

feel weirdly checked out after this game now, we didnt get pumped or anything but the way we played was so far from an attractive or effective gameplan it really was painful to watch.
After I peeled myself from the ceiling , reality is this is the trajectory of a young side , the trend line is choppy but it is heading right way , hope that we gather ourselves in back half of year , share senior ops around and don’t get stuck on a losing side week in week out

Very harsh on our tall forwards. Yes, they kicked points when they should have kicked goals but for most of the second and third quarters the ball was in our back half. When our tall forward were competing, it was for long high kicks against a well-structured defence. You could have had Tony Lockett and Lance Franklin in our forward line, and they would have struggled to get a kick.
The group that deserves much more criticism is the midfield. Not only did they lose the clearance count but most of Hopper's and Taranto's 20+ possessions were worthless. Unfortunately, this has been the same for most of the year. We desperately need a shakeup in the midfield.
I don’t wanna hang young fellas but reality is the talls kicked like 6-7p bw them , all set shots , and rarely even close , it’s on them

Banks to replace Short
Yeah but talk is hell be straight in i'm just saying we are past all this crap that will take us nowhere. See Davison yesterday say at rfc they played him forward when he has been a winger all his footy life and now got his chance at the dogs and doing well. We sure don't like doing things properly anymore.

On the tram I was talking to a group of stunning young German girls who were excited to go to their 1st AFL game live. I foolishly said that even though both teams were near the bottom they would see lots more excitement at the G than a bundesligue final with the 2 best teams. Even that dark period during the mid 80's to early 90's, I never sat at 3/4 time thinking of more productive things to be doing instead and how boring and miserable the game was. For Lynches 100th game I thought he might receive a little silver service, instead of slop or nothing at all. What a hollow game Saturday was. Club needs to pump money into development and skills coaching. If Yze gets extended another year it would want to be at a reduced rate. Soft cap needs to be prioritised.

not sure about our tall forward options. When Lefau played, he kicked well and scored very early, these guys need to be able to put some scoreboard pressure. its like we have mids that cant use the ball well and forwards that cant convert.
We need to make quick and bold changes if we want to see finals in a few years time.

The decision to play Balta was diabolical. He played woefully the week b4 in the VFL & brought that form on Saturday. The McLean goal he looked like a headless crook.
All on the match committee.
He has been a bit like that…He’s obviously best 22, and it would be hard being a yo-yo…But he needs another scalp to frank it, like he did to Ben King…Maybe Sam Darcy next game…

Set shots are a huge problem and the lack of a dynamic small forward ....I'm wondering if they even spend much time on goal kicking

We have possible small forward reinforcements coming next year. Daffy, Leys and Tanner Armstrong could probably play as one as well.

I don't know why everyone is suprised by Balta's performance, hes the most overrated player on our list imo, Miller went past him last year. there's a reason our coaches have repeatedly tried to move Balta out of defence. At least unlike TT and Hopper he has trade value. Like them he'll play ahead of players in better form (Blight) because how much he's getting paid.

If we're doing a mid-season review:

Wins:
We've been forced to replace Short with Banks.
Lalor and Trainor look good.
Sims has shown signs and moves well.
HRS and Miller and Campbell have had good years.
Much better on injury front, and IMO our fitness is okay for a young team.
Effort is mostly fine.
Our defence is solid, in general we look okay when the other team has the ball.

Losses:
We continue to play a dreadful midfield of veterans which have been thoroughly beaten nearly every game.
Ross and Mansell have matured into C-grade players.
MRJ hasn't resumed the purple-patch he had before he got injured.
Sonsie hasn't cemented a place in the team.
Green is too wasteful to turn into a good player (probably keeps his spot though)
Bauer won't make it either.
Ryan, Colina, et al. are a waste of time, shouldn't be on the list at all.
Our foward line looks uncoached, obviously there's a lack of experience there but I don't see how anyone can learn how to play 'correctly' in the current structure.
We continue to play Kmac for some reason.

Neutral:
Our ball movement is bad but no worse than I expected from losing Rioli, Baker, Bolton and Graham. I prefer chip-kicks over mindlessly kicking long personally.
Brown and KMac2 are both tracking okay. Dow is doing better than last year but still below where we should be.
Too early to say about Armstrong and Faull, but both looked as unready as you'd expect.

Overall I haven't changed my opinion of where we're at, expect our list will hits its nadir around 2027 barring FAs or trades. This board continues to put too much faith into 'getting games into the kids', even though most of those kids are less promising than Cumberland, RCD and Stack were.

I'd be hesitant to trade out multiple top picks for Reid when our list is so sorely lacking in so many positions.

Yea yea yea , where were the German tourists off to and are they coming again next home game

Sorry but if Koschitzke plays another game for us we are in strife.

Has been playing down key back for a while now and I would say Miller, Balta, Blight, Gray and Young are all ahead of him.
Yeah was supposed to say blight not Kosi

It's an area of the ground (key defence) where we appear to have a bit of depth.

It would be interesting to see what he might bring in a trade. A couple more first rounders wouldn't hurt.

Pretty good write up baazzaa.......Although I don't agree with your assessment of Balta (he should be playing CHF, not CHB, we are in dire need of a good marking option at CHF and our backs are already our strongest line in our team.

TBH we have a lot of players that are not AFL quality, and we need to make that call.

UPside is that we have a large amount of high draft picks, shat should show in a year or two.

I'd be trading Balta to West Coast for Oscar Allen.
Fits the age profile nicely.

WIN/WIN !!!!

Can someone convince me that Rhyan Mansell is AFL quality. I know he copped a corky in the second quarter that limited his output and lead to him being subbed, but he hadn't much before that and in the weeks prior.

Maybe he is there for his pressure, but he is not very damaging and doesn't have much forward craft.

There was some champion data thing where he was one of the highest rated players and our highest rated player. He’s alright as a workhorse small forward but our big issue is we have limited scoreboard threat up forward. Defenders are running off our young KPFs, Green and Ross because they pose limited threat up forward.

These are our recent opponents half back stats, absolutely murdered us in each game.

Blakey had 34 (highest for the season)
Ash had 36 (highest for the season)
Archie Roberts had 34 (highest for the season)
McGrath also had 31 which is his second highest for the year.

I think we need to start taking a different approach and maybe look at both Alger and Lefau after the bye. Rotate Faull and Sims until Armstrong is fit and then re-assess. Can’t see any reason to give Fawcett or Bauer games at this stage. Alger is the closest thing we have to a scoring threat small forward other than Lalor, and until Hotton comes back. Lalor should replace Ross. Team will look way better.

He was our 2nd in our goal kicking last year and was an elite forward 50 tackler across the comp. Also finished 7th in our B&F which is nothing to write home about, but worth considering that he was the highest finishing forward by a mile (apart from Shai who is a gun) in a diabolical year for forwards. This year is similar with only the very talented Campbell showing anything.

He’s having a down year and not saying he’s not upgradable but he busts his ass every week no matter the score or time. Clearly loves the club. For mine his effort is all you can ask as a supporter and paying member. Certainly a far cry from Balta giving his opponent 7m of leg rope goal side or slowly jogging looking at the ground while McLean is preparing to take an uncontested mark on him.
