This guy deserves more credit than he gets. I was one who though he was a transitional player but he is now far from it. Now one of the most imortant members of a very good midfield. The first one into a pack and the last one out. Love this little guy, in football terms of course.

He's always had the recognition from me, for all the reasons you've said Springy!

One day we might even get WW to admit that he is a very integral memebr of the on-ball structure and not just a transitional player as he always refers to him as. ;) :p

Players that often cop a lot of flack but that are integral parts of our side:

Robert Shirley - our best tagger and a tough little in and under player
Ian Perrie - only those people looking at stats and with unreasonable expectations think he is not important to us. IMHO, he has played his role to perfection this year and I wouldn't be surprised if he finished reasonably high in B&F and best team man award.
Hayden Skipworth - Cops a LOT but he just keeps preforming. I think we have lost a bit of versatility with Skippy out injured. He just gives us a player who can be a goal sneak and have a run in the midfield.
Brett Burton - Cops ********loads but absolutely integral player to our side. Runs all day, tries his guts out and is a proven match winner. Good outwights the bad by a LONG way.
Michael Doughty - I am far from a fan but we really need to understand what this bloke is asked to do. He rotates with Shirley as a tagger and he does have clean hands in traffic. He is also used as a linkman quite often and plays that role really well.

I am sure I forgot someone. Supporters get fickle and bag players if they have a bad game and turn nasty on them if we they happen to have a bit of a down year. Unless of course they are big name players.

He's definitely been a good replacement ever since Stinger left our team and puts his body in and under packs which is great o watch. Always been a fan!

I gotta say, at the start of the season I think I went on record as saying he wouldn't be much value this year. How wrong I was. He has been fantastic this season and yet another one of those 'backbone' players to make a big step up.
Stiffy, you forgot Biglands, Reilly and Matthew Smith. :p

I think he left these 3 out on purpose.

I've always been a fan of Robbie's. I think he is terrific.

I'd also like to say well done to Dogga last night. Did some bloody good things.

:)

What a magnificent team we have - do not need to replace anyone until someone retires.

Watts, Meesen, Knights, Maric, might as well get used to playing a few years in SANFL

Yep, win a few games and everone is a champion, lose a few and those same players are hacks.

Macca have to get this in perspective, Craig has everyone playing as a team - could the team be improved this year or next - of course - next year is always a new year ;)

Perris is useless, played a very rare good game last week. Most of the time he does nothing out there. Doesn't kick goals, struggles to hold onto marks he should swallow. Just a very ordinary footballer.

And what exactly do YOU think his role is and how is he going about it??????

Its not all about kicking goals and taking every mark. Why don't you wait until the end of the season and have a look at the B&F, Best Team Man and Coach's award voting to see how Perrie rates in those categories ;)

Shirley has grown on me like tinea. Starting to leave his legacy. A great, courageous player.

You must be the drongo who sits a couple of rows behind me who bags Perrie from the 1st bounce. I just wish you would disappear to the bar before the game, rather than just after half-time.

Top post Stiffy. People need to realise that we cannot expect Perrie to be a Carey or a Shirley to be a Judd ... but that they still have important roles to play that are critical to the Crows' success. We will never have 18 tier-1 players on the field at once!! We certainly do have some fickle supporters who bag particular players after 1 poor performance or even after a good performance. Heck, I'm even coming around to Biglands being a worthy contributor in the last few games.

Who is this Perris you speak of? Surely you don't mean Ian Perrie. I am an Ian Perrie convert. I too, used to cringe every time the ball was kicked in his vicinity. I too, used to put my head in my hands as he lined up for goal (probably from a free kick because heaven forbid he actually take a mark). Oh yes, I used clap when he left the ground. Not because I was applauding his performance, but applauding the coach for ensuring we had 18 players on the ground rather than 17.
But those days are GONE. Perrie is absolutely critical to the structure of our forward line. Apart from taking another one of the big backmen out of the play he provides a good strong target for our midfielders to kick. Hell, now that he has the glove he's even now considered a GOOD OPTION. So say what you will of the Doughty's, Biglands' and Reilly's of this team. I can handle that. But I am completely on Sarge's side now.
P.S. He will kick 8 goals in the Grand Final. :D

agree, but if you look at his stats, he stacks up well there too!

Not me. However, this man deserves some credit for valid criticism.

Fair enough he may be up there in the Best Team Man and Coach's award, and I know this is an important aspect of a successfull football club. However, I'm talking about his on-field performances. As I said, he should learn how to hold onto marks, because on the odd occasion when he gets into a good position, more often than not he can't complete the mark. He also needs to work on his kicking. He's booted 25.24 this season, clearly not good enough.
