Be very interesting to see how this works out. In 08, Ischenko and Campbell worked very well off the track, creating a technique/style of rucking which invariably created a 50/50 contest (which our superior inside players then won more often than not).

In 09, Campbell played on his dodgy knees, played CHB more than ruck, and then retired. He couldn't play ruck as they changed the rules, and his technique (essentially blocking opponents jump, using his frame to protect the drop and neutralise any opposition tap) was outlawed.

With the new rules I thought he might be a chance, as the only real questions are whether the knee will stand up to a pre-season (but he could always be a lumbering ruck only), and whether he's got any "tricks" that will work in the ruck 2011.

Good luck to a great bloke, and pretty decent footballer too.

In a twist of fate PJ might join the Hawks. By passing on their last pick in the rookie draft the Hawks can select someone in March before the season starts under a new rule. PJ is apparently going to train with them to try and get a spot.

Hawks keeping a spot open for Travis Tuck but PJ could be a chance.

Congratulations on picking up Robbie Campbell. Hell of nice guy and good versatile footballer to boot.

Melbourne have bagged themselves one extra member (me!) with this selection. It's paying off already. (Well $85 worth of paying off....)

edit: and by the way, no doubt you will come up with your own nickname for him but amongst my group of fellow supporters he's known as "Trunks". You only need to look at his quads to figure out why, built like bloody tree trunks.

Melbourne Football Club today introduced Robbie Campbell to media, a player the club hopes will be "the new Paul Johnson", according to coach Dean Bailey.

Gosh, I hope not!!!

What an odd thing to say

when paul johnson came to melbourne he started off really good. Also he probably got the most out of himself. You dont know how the ins and outs of the club are. He is probably like brad miller in that regards perhaps.

This could really allow us to free up Jamar to actually have some game time up forward as well as resting. Campbell could be a perfect player to ruck most of the first half then be subbed for a runner

Not just a good guy, the nicest guy in the AFL. Watched the 2008 GF and he really did his knee playing that hard and jumping that high, til that moment never realised he had been holding back because it was degenerating.

Will be a really decent player for you if his knee is good to go and is very underrated, also I like Melbourne that much more now :D

It'll be interesting to see how Campbell is used with this new sub rule. No doubt that if we still had the 4 man interchange bench and there weren't to be any changes to most teams setups of a backup ruckman on the bench, Jamar and Campbell would be a pretty scary combo.

Depending on how clubs work out this rule, they still may be a scary combo. There's some serious muscle there.

Callum Sinclair was soft as butter at school. Not at all interested.

Very happy with Campbell though. Unlike Meesen and Johnson who had potential but never showed anything before coming to Melbourne, Campbell has shown that he's a quality ruckman. I doubt we'll get more than say 2 years of him but if Gawn isn't ready by then I'll be worried.

I wonder if Hawthorn thought he was going to make it to their last pick?

Seems a possibility if theyre now considering Johnson.

Hawthorn decided long ago they wouldn't take Campbell back. Hope it works out for you guys, ripping bloke and a massive unit who gives his all.

such a great move by the club
robbie still has 3-4 years left in him, by the time he retires, spencil and gawn should be up and running to fill the spots
we have all seen how lethal russian is up forward in times of need
and robbie isn't just a fill in, he could be the best 2nd ruckman in the game

Because we drafted him as a rookie, does that mean we will have to wait for someone to get on the long term injury list before he can play in the seniors?
