Griffin asked for a trade in Sept last year to Port Adelaide. If he is willing to go to that filth, he'd play anywhere. He is a genuine first ruckman and iD be staggered if we arent looking closely at him. Would add to Geelongs growing list of talented indigenous players.

Think the Laidler scenario PO. Out of contract. Committed to Carlton. We were left with virtually no bargaining power.

Warnock could well be a reverse Laidler. With the caveat that we rate him, of course, and Balmy's reported comment during the week seemed to point to us feeling that way. Also, that Vards and Simpson don't come up.

Agree you never close off other options and you seek out the best option. But good players under contract predominantly involve tough negotiations with the club holding the contract having the whip hand. That's not the case with good players out of contract who commit to another club. Should an out of contract Warnock commit to another club the Blues really have little bargaining power..

Gillies is another example. Last year had he insisted on heading to Hawthorn we had the whip hand. Whereas with an out of contract Gillies - given the same circumstances - the Hawks have the whip hand.

no... he'd have to get traded there, and i doubt we'd just let him walk...

but he is out of contract and could walk to the preseason draft if hawthon-geelong cant come to an agreement. we would have no leverage in regards to what round pick we could possibly get. that is what ammo was meaning.

Thats true but would he get past GWS and GC as an uncontracted player. I doubt the money the Hawks would pay would be less than what they would pay.

For that , matter Dogs , or a few other clubs as Hawks will finish high.

If he commits to the Hawks. Agrees to terms with them as Laidler did with Carlton our options are strictly limited. Get very little or nothing.

Same applies in the Warnock situation.

incorrect. If Geelong decide not to trade with Hawthorn, he has to put a price on his head and take his chances in the draft

Yeah I think griffin would be a good fit at the cats.I dont really rate wornock but I also didnt think moplop would be a good player this year so I cant pick em leave it to wells and co.

And we get nothing. As I posted.

We could have done that with Laidler too but we chose to do a draft pick deal so we didn't end-up with zilch.

I suspect we were happy enough to let Laidler go. He would still be 8th in line to play in our back 6. Gillies on the other hand is more urgently required, particularly if Scarlo keeps his word and retires at te end of the year. Think the Cats would be much tougher this time round. Its one thing to leave knowing youre getting traded to the club you want to play at. Another to know youre going to Western Sydney.

I thought JB was on about ruckmen who are out of contract at year end and Warnock seemed the pick of them.
That's exactly what I was on about - also looking at purely number 1 ruckmen, so I don't consider Vardy or even West etc to be relevant. He would be cheap (from a draft POV) as he doesn't really want to be at Carlton if he isn't getting game time. And while Carlton might think he has a big future, Carlton are playing to win the the premiership this year and Warnock will get game time simply to keep him happy.

I'd rate him higher than 'not great'. He's a giant whose best footy is in front of him and whose progress has been curtailed by injury. So he's definitely worth a look should the need arise.

That said, I know Carlton went to quite some trouble to get him and still rate him. So they'll do their level best to retain him I'd say.

OP's words, not mine. However I don't particularly rate his presence around the ground from what I have seen and given that he is behind both Hampson and Kreuzer, both shorter than him, his height is not indicative of ruck prowess. He's also had 50 games behind him, therefore assessments can be made.

The Laidler example is not an accurate comparison, because while being out of contract is a factor, ruckman are worth more than third tall defenders (nothing against Laidler, he's a good player, just saying). I also tend to think that if we were to spend a pick on a ruckman at the end of the year we'd want it to be someone who was durable (and Warnock doesn't seem to be) and who wouldn't cost much, so that if Vardy comes back or Dawson comes on and the recruit becomes depth, we haven't wasted much. And there's also the factor that given the cash he's on (at least 400k I think) at Carlton Warnock probably won't want to take a pay cut when he could get that money, and regular gametime at GWS. On all fronts someone like Griffin is probably a better option, cheaper and more durable.

All I’m suggesting is that in case Vardy (and I’m not convinced ruck is his best position btw) and Dawson don’t come up we need to do some forward planning. There aren’t that many decent experienced ruckman around. And whilst we should always go with the best fit for us it’s far easier to organise a favourable deal with an out of contract player than one that’s under contract.

Although he’s a liitle shorter than Sandilands he has a longer reach and he can play. I’ve seen him give the Carlton midfield an armchair ride. And it appears from Balmy’s comments we rate him too.

The risk is he has had major shoulder problems which I believe he’s over and some minor soft tissue injuries in recent times.

I know the Blues rate him and would be reluctant to part with him and I think he’s content to stay put. So it is probably not a goer but we would be negligent not to take a serious look at him. And one thing we can’t accuse our football operations area of being is negligent.

Now this is the kind of player we should be targeting a highly rated junior who is stuck behind two entrenched players who would be looking to get some game time. (Sound like a former Geelong developing ruckman to anyone).

Lycett has some good size about him 202cms and 99kgs and is only turning 20 this year I would love to see us go after him

Thanks for noticing the Post CA08 - Lycett seem to go alright yesterday when NicNAT was out we need to be agressive in which ever players we go after....I'm sick of seeing us get cherry picked by other clubs

Mumford
GAJ

Now people are talking of Menzel going back to SA and West not re-signing - time for Geelong to get even when it comes to trading
