Do we have any idea if he is getting close to a return?

It will be interesting to see how they will structure our forward line with him in it.

Really hope he gets the chance to play in finals!

Rocca eyes Prelim return.

Rocca's saying he's no chance for this week, but some chance if we get past the Saints. He also recognises that our current forward set-up is working well and that there may not be a spot for him.

how much game time could me expect from rocca on return?

60 % ?

and who would we expect hawthorn to play on him?

I'd say he'd play most the game but move less then even he usually does. Hawthorn would almost certainly send Croad to him. I know Croad is probably their best defender and hence should go to Cloke. I just don't think they'd risk sending a Gilham or Murphy to Rocca and for that reason I think they'd send Croad to Rocca and let one of Gilham or Murphy go to Cloke.

If Rocca is fit, Dawes has to come out, its as simple as that. There is no room for sentiments in finals footy, you pick the best players available. Of course Rocca will not be totally match fit, but just park him in the goal square and we should get a few goals out of him.

Against Hawthorns superior midfield we aren't likely to get as many chances to pinpoint passes to our forwards and Rocca is by far the best 'bomb it long and pray he marks it' forward we have.

hell ya we need to make room for the big fella! Wouldnt want to get rid of Daisy or new kid on the block Dawes though! He is on fire that kid.:D

Would be a win to Hawthorn if Rocca played and "doors" didnt.

Wouldnt think due to fitness Rocca would play again this year. I like Collingwood hope you smash the Saints and we have a 100k Final in two weeks.

In all seriousness Dawes doesn't have the fitness to run out a full game either. He is not quick either so we aren't losing much in that department brining Rocca in. As much as his been good statistically fact is when we have need a target up foward when Cloke has gone missing etc A forth / fifth gamer doesn't have the presence needed. He also has a whole host of technical and experince based problems with his marking. Rocca is a massive improvement. It also means against Hawthorn Croad will go to Rocca instead of Cloke, Alternatively Someone like Gilham or Murphy who is undersized will go Rocca who should be to big and strong regardless of fitness.

The burning question is...just how fit is Rocca really?
I would not push Anthony back just to squeeze Pebs in.
Dawes, despite some valid questions about his "presence" showed last week that he is increasing his work rate and it had definite effect.
Some of the areas he looked a bit deficient in have picked up considerably.
He kicked 3 goals, took several strong overhead contested marks.
One particular incident convinced me he is still unsure exactly where he fits in the scheme of things. I think either Lockyer or Shaw cut of a pass meant for Dawes. Dawes pulled up, possibly conceding "seniority", but a Rocca type player would have taken the grab and cleaned up our other player at the same time....This is purely a confidence, how do I fit and what is my job issue...I have experienced it before myself when starting at a new club or the first couple of games up a grade. you tend to concede to the established players until a certain point and suddenly your there and a part of the team and god help anyone who cuts off your lead or infringes your space. I am sure some of the ex-players on the board know exactly what I mean. Jack Anthony suffered from it to an extent early but last week really demanded the ball and patrolled "his turf".

I would love Rocca in but, and I am sure this is what will happen, the club will have to assess the risks versus the positives.

All this is moot of course if Rocca is not going to be available.
There is still a big question mark on him even passing a fitness test.
It's one thing to put your hand up, god if you could play a final who wouldn't, but another for the coach to grb it and chuck you in the side.

Id Love to see the big fella play in a final this year but i just dont think its gonna happen Rocca fit or not.

The thing is he hasnt had a game of footy in 12 weeks. He wouldnt be used to the pace after that long out and his match fitness wouldnt be 100%.

I reckon it would be to much of a risk to bring him back in after so long out.

Its a shame for Pebs. But hopefully he will get a chance next year:thumbsu:

Great Post and I agree with That:thumbsu:

I wouldn't play him.
Let's be honest, Anthony is barely fit at the best of times and he hasn't ran for months now.

He won't be able to move.

Dawes offers enthusiasim and fresh legs.
And he has done fairly well to date.

Let's just get over St Kilda first anyway.

Plus these days after a Lead he is Huffing and Puffing just after that

Tough one. His experience and presence would come in very handy but he may not be able to contribute much not fully fit (remember last year's PF). I think he would be able to handle the pace, he's played AFL footy for a long time and a bunch of finals, he'd know where it's at.

On a lighter note, I am really looking forward to Bruce next year when he has to call a game with John Anthony and Anthony Rocca in the same forward line.....It should make for some humorous repartee.

The Ox or "Theo X" as he should be known will also be interesting....
