As Rogers number one buddy, I though he deserves a thread all of his own!

On the weekend, the 'indigenous' round, how fitting is it that he will play his 100th game. It's taken some time getting there and it certainly hasn't been easy for him, which makes me appreciate him much more.

What a champ. Such an under rated player yet a VERY important part of our team at Fremantle.

Here's hoping The Genius can celebrate his century in style :thumbsu:

FREMANTLE defender Roger Hayden will play his 100th game in Indigenous Round, but it’s a milestone that looked a long way off at times during an impressive yet injury-scarred career.

A punctured lung and hamstring injury held the 28-year-old back in 2008, but it was a broken leg in 2004 that most threatened his playing career after being elevated off Fremantle's rookie list in 2002.

Hayden is now an indispensable part of a rebuilding Fremantle, but he said his career was far from guaranteed when he broke his leg in the second last game of the 2004 season.

"You think 'Can I get back or not'," Hayden said from Fremantle Oval on Tuesday.

"But I had my family around me, my wife and at the time my little boy. Just having them around me had my confidence up so they told me, 'Just keep your head up, you're going to get back', and it worked out in the end.

"It has taken awhile, but I’m happy to get there."

Hayden had played 42 games at the time of the injury and missed the entire 2005 season. He's missed a total of 53 games since debuting in 2002, but said to now have his milestone fall on Indigenous Round was a nice coincidence.

"It's a good concept by the AFL to bring it in, considering we have over 80 indigenous players in the AFL now," Hayden said.

"Over the last few years, you can see the number of players being drafted from an indigenous background has skyrocketed."

Hayden credits backyard footy with his brother for his polished skills and notes Nicky Winmar as a boyhood idol.

Peter Matera and Chris Lewis were also favourites while Hayden was growing up a West Coast supporter and he says the speed and flair that typified those footballers is what people love about the indigenous contribution to the game.

"Teams love seeing that and supporters love seeing that too, so I think you're going to see a lot more [indigenous players] coming up in the future," he said.

Electrifying draftee Stephen Hill is the player at Fremantle with that sort of potential and Hayden said the 19-year-old was on track to be a very good footballer.

"You've just got to take those young blokes and guide them and make sure they do everything right to become one of the top, elite players in the competition," he said.

"He has the potential to do that. He's got a good head on his shoulders.

"He's taken every step as it comes and hopefully he does become one of those players for us."

Well done Roger, now stay fit so you can get to play another hundred.

I wonder when his boy will old enough to pick up in the draft.

Congratulations to the genius. Love watching him play more than any other player in the comp. Dead set Genius:thumbsu::thumbsu:

In my eyes he's a spiritual leader at our club and is finally getting the accolades he deseves. He's like a good bottle of red, getting better as time passes. Let's hope his body gives him his just deserts.

Absolutely the best natural footballer in our team. His ball handling is exquisite, his movement through traffic poetry and his vision and decision making second to none.
Comes across as an absolute champion human being too. Couldn't be happier that he plays for us.

well done Roger "dodger" Hayden - 100 games

hey how many more years you guys think he can play for i've got a feeling he could still play for 4-6 yrs if he wanted , i think if he slowed a bit to much for midfield he could be a great small forward , its gonna be great to watch and i hope its at least 3-4 more yrs .

ahha roger you star. Shine on Saturday.

lol credits his brother for being a great kick, i played basketball with his brother a month ago, absolute gun on the bball court -we won by 25 pts. Has the same evasion skills like roger. legend

I'm so glad he has reached this milestone, but I REALLY want him to make it to 150 and beyond.

His ability to read play and apply defensive pressure is second to none. Just amazing the way he can close down an opponent and strip the ball off them, then dodge through heavy traffic and deliver perfect passes.

Onya Rodge :thumbsu:

I love this man, I wish he could play for another 10 years, the most skilled player in our team IMO.

Well Done Roger...:)

One of my all time favourite players. :thumbsu:

If Rog played in Melbourne he would be a high profile player.

Here's hoping he gets to 150 and life membership :thumbsu:

Let's get him a win this w/end to celebrate :thumbsu::D

Congratulations Rog

An absolute delight to watch, always seems so cool and calm out there, and has the skills to match

Agree with what has been said above, hope the boys get up and have a win for him on the weekend, and he goes on to become a life member because he truly deserves it.

Also hope he finishes up as part of Fremantles first premership side ;)

Such a shame that injuries have robbed him of the chance of playing more games by now. I think on the weekend they said he's the 2nd oldest player in the AFL not to have played 100.

One of my favourite Freo players ever. I love him so much I'll even forgive the fact that he used to be an eagles supporter.

is it 150 games for his kids to qualify under father son? if so... 2 years injury free would get him there :thumbsu: a wonderful player its amazing to think he only has 99 games of AFL experience though, just so cool calm and collected in pressure situations!

:o:o:D Onya Roger! True Gentleman and superstar of not only FFC but the game in general!!.

Still reckon Roger was robbed of an AA a couple of years back.:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Without doubt one to the best players to don the Docker's purple (and other colours at certain points ;)). Has all the qualities you would want in a player, skill, poise, good disposal, athleticism, a cool head, good off field demeanour, well spoke. Love this guy to bits. Wish him all the best and an injury free back half to his career.

On this, I reckon he's got more than two in him given his layoff a few years back (and if he remains injury free, big if with Rodge). I could see him do a McLeod and just go those extra years and damage all those teams that just say 'too old' and let him dominate from a flank (fwd or back). His skills are so silky that he could compensate for a loss of a yard or two in pace and still be a solid contributor ... we're not talking McManus* here :p.

*Disclaimer, I'm not dissing McManus, well not much, he's a club legend too :o.
