We have three spots to fill in the rookie list draft. As someone said on the main board, any person overlooked in the main draft is automatically entered into the rookie draft. Which players would you be interested in picking up?

I'll give the WA contenders:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Craig Glancy - East Perth - 18 - 181cm - 73kg

Wins a lot of the ball and seems a player who can take that next step. Played seniors with East Perth in 2001 and earned All-Australian selection at under-18 level.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adam Jones - Subiaco - 17 - 176cm - 71kg

Lightly framed but doesn't lack courage. Is suited in the midfield or across halfback. Another AIS-AFL Academy member this year.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quinten Lynch - West Perth - 18 - 191cm - 101kg

Hard-nosed utility, who has benefited greatly from league football. Won All-Australian selection this year and looks a ready-made prospect.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aidan Parker - Subiaco - 18 - 192cm - 84kg

Classy key-position defender, who makes good decisions under pressure. Finished the season strongly at senior level and didn't disappoint at the national under-18 titles.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clancy Rudeforth - Claremont - 18 - 180cm - 78kg

Hale School product who thrives on workload as a rover or through the centre. Was captain of WA in this year's national under-18 championships.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luke Webster - East Perth - 19 - 187cm - 85kg

Ultra-professional youngster, who overcame a knee reconstruction to play in the Royals' premiership side. Hard-working and makes few mistakes. Former WA under-18 captain.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well the two obvious stand outs are Lynch and Glancy both being All-Australians. If you look at Lynch's stats though, he seems to be another Fewster which we don't really need. Todays game is fast and furious and tall slow players can't adapt very well. Hence I wouldn't go with Lynch. Glancy on the other hand, I would pick up. Seen him play a few times and he looks the goods.

Another East Perth product I would look at is Luke Webster. He looked very impressive for East Perth this year and looks like he's over his injuries. He is a forward too which would help the team.

Last but not least, Aidan Parker. Reading his profile, he reminds me a bit of Darren Glass. Classy and reads the play well but obviously needs to improve his skills. I would go for him if he was still available.

Overall order

1st round: Glancy
2nd round: Parker
3rd round: Webster

Does anyone know what the chances of us getting all three are? Would interstate clubs look at them for moving interstate as usually they don't. Then we also have to worry about the Dockers picking them up as well. Is there some way you can technically "bags" a rookie player?

Anyway, who do you all think we should pick up?

My preferred order would be:

#1 Craig Glancy - Seems like a quality young midfielder, but I suspect Freo will take him with their first pick.

#2 Clancy Rudeforth - WA under18 captain, he has to be pretty good to win that honour. Only reason he didn't get drafted was because of that letter, which kinda makes you feel sorry for him.

#3 Aidan Parker - A young defender on our list would be good, especially since Prior, Jako, Milli and Roo are old, a backup would be good.

#2 Clancy Rudeforth - WA under18 captain, he has to be pretty good to win that honour. Only reason he didn't get drafted was because of that letter, which kinda makes you feel sorry for him.

can someone please elaborate on the 'letter'. I am totally in the dark.

Wasn't he the dude that sent out a letter to all the Victorian clubs, telling them that he wasn't interested in moving interstate and that he'd nick off after two years if they did pick him.

Yup, thats the one. Got into a lot of shi_t from the AFL for that. Had to make an apology to all the clubs he sent the letter to.

He would have to feel pretty stupid now, not being draft at all. I suppose he deserves that, but I hope we take him anyway.

serves him right.

I remember John Hutton was widely tipped to be no 1 draft pick and destined for bottom of the ladder Brisbane. He publicly stated that he would sit out for a year if Brisbane picked him.

He was number 1 pick and went to Brisbane. He said he was just bluffing, but I don't think his new team mates would have bought it.

I would imagine most peole on this forum haven't heard of him. I wonder why?

I played cricket against Clancy, he was a good cricketer too! I know that he should realise that this is a national competition and should be fortunate to play with whatever club picks him up, but how worse was his letter to the Victorian clubs compared to Sam Power's sooky la la parents saying they would hold their son from playing with a non Victorian club?

That's even worse. Young draftees have some sort of excuse in that they don't know any better. But parents/adults?

Little Sammy Wammy might be better of playing VFL then.

Some good players mentioned there but there must be a heap more over east. So again I think we should pick up the best rookies available no matter where they come from, and that may mean taking a couple of Vics.

Didn't Nathan Buckley do something similar at one stage?

Similar sort of thing in that he wanted to go to Collingwood. The Bears thought they'd pick him anyway, knowing he was only there for a short period. Anyway, history tells, he's now at Collingwood, 5 Copeland Trophies, captain of the club. Never forget his remark when Port tried to lure him back to Adelaide. He said he'd rather stay at Collingwood for less money and play at a side that will be a finals team. Since then, hmmmm, how many times has Collingwood made the finals (compared to Port's 2 in 99 and 01), and how many times have Collingwood ended up above Port on the ladder? It makes interesting reading!
