Can i use this thread as a "I told you so" platform. Ive never been Rooneys biggest fan. Ive said it once and ill say it again, his best work is and has been done as winger and in the EPL and especially at Man United hes kind of irrelevant in any system that has Berbatov in it

We have known this for a long time now. Rooney and Berbatov does not work. So Sir Alex needs to make a choice. Berba or Rooney? Bayern Munich would be the only club in world football I can think of that can afford and would want Berbatov. Would still command 25-30 mill.

Reports of Rooneys worth at 50 mill are way off the mark. Marketing wise added to his football talents id have him at 70. The guy looks like a smashed crab but in a way thats his charm and it actually makes him marketable. Ive always believed to be a marketable figure you dont need to be gorgeous, but you can also be just laughably ugly. A bill that Rooney fits nicely.

Mourinho will offer 40-50 mill + Benzema for Rooney come January. What Sir Alex does will be interesting to see

Manchester United may have dismissed talk of Wayne Rooney leaving Old Trafford as "nonsense" - but the reality is that the England star may well be heading out of the club in January.

United's reaction to newspaper suggestions that Rooney could be on his way was swift.

"To suggest Wayne Rooney will be sold in January is nonsense," said a club spokesman.

But Press Association Sport understands Red Devils officials have been informed Rooney will not sign a new contract, and therefore may have little option other than to cash in on their most valuable asset.

There has been plenty of speculation about Sir Alex Ferguson's relationship with his star striker since stories about the 24-year-old's private life first surfaced at the beginning of last month.

Rooney appeared to make a direct challenge to Ferguson's authority on Tuesday after England's Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro, when he went out of his way to contradict the Scot's claim that he has been suffering from an ankle injury.

Ferguson has so far avoided any meaningful public discussion about Rooney's situation but appeared to deliver his own verdict when he left the forward out of his starting line-up for Saturday's Premier League encounter with West Brom, then brought him on as a substitute with 19 minutes remaining and told him to play on the left wing.

Although it was interpreted as the final straw by some, Rooney's relationship with Ferguson soured some time ago.

Talks over a new contract have stalled and there is no intention from the player's side to reopen negotiations.

It will come as a shock to many observers to discover the extent and speed of the breakdown, given it was only last season that Rooney scored 34 goals for his club.

Even though Rooney's form this season has been well below his normal high standards - his only goal, against West Ham in August, came from the penalty spot - he remains a crowd favourite.

United do have the option of sitting tight and hoping for a thaw in relations.

However, they are acutely aware Rooney's value will plummet if he does not leave in January and 12 months after that he would be free to sign pre-contract terms with any club on the continent, and leave on a Bosman free transfer in the summer of 2012.

The Glazer family are unlikely to be keen on that idea, which is why the prospect of Rooney leaving midway through the current campaign has taken hold.

Although there are plenty of examples that can be used of United prospering after releasing top players - Roy Keane, David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy are obvious examples - with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Edwin van der Sar and Gary Neville all approaching the end of their careers, it would certainly test the claim of chief executive David Gill that Ferguson has a sizeable transfer budget at his disposal despite the club's massive debts.

As with most managers in their late 60s, questions would also be asked about the desire to rebuild another team. Yet for Ferguson, it is the type of challenge he relishes and few doubt he is capable of keeping United competitive at the highest level providing he is given sufficient funds.

If there is an acceptance that Rooney is leaving, Gill will concentrate on getting the highest possible fee, having succeeded in prizing a world-record £80million out of Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo last summer.

Real would doubtless be interested in Rooney, although the same could be said for virtually every top side in Europe, including Manchester City, which would be an unpalatable thought to the Old Trafford faithful.

There has been some speculation about United interest in Fernando Torres, whose form dip at Liverpool mirrors that of Rooney 35 miles down the East Lancashire Road.

In the meantime, Dimitar Berbatov, Javier Hernandez and Michael Owen - who missed Saturday's game with a groin injury - will be asked to shoulder the burden, with Ferguson to decide what role Rooney is to play given his stated position.

The United boss is due to address the media on Tuesday, prior to his side's Champions League encounter with Bursaspor at Old Trafford, which should be fascinating.

Lol wut?

Before last season, he performed the best when he was playing as the second striker since he could drop back into the midfield to receive the ball and set up plays. This was evident during his partnership with RVN and then Saha.
 
I think Ferguson is a total gobshite, but you can't help admire the way he stamps out player power. If you try to undermine his authority - then you're out the door. It's why he's been so successful - it's admirable, really.
 
Rumour is bogus imo, but then again, United saying "we won't give him up" is total bullshit as well. He'll go like Beckham and RVN did before him if he gets out of control. Especially with 18 months left on his contract.

If Rooney does want out next summer then United would be stupid to stop him and allow him go for nothing 12 months after.

Not sure you can blame Glazers for Ronaldo or Rooney. Maybe Tevez (cheers Uncle Malc) was down to them.

Problem United have isn't losing top players, it's not replacing them with quality.

Here's some news for you. THEY'RE NOT EVEN PAYING THE DEBT. They're just leaving the money sitting in the bank so they can lie about there being money for transfers, while the debt goes on piling up 16 per cent interest.

Tevez's contract and demands were not met due to the club being cheap, but why weren't we willing to give money despite being the most profitable club in world football? Debt.

The money Real was offering was too good for Gill and Glazers to ignore, I admit at the time, I was resigned to see him go, but if the debt wasn't hindering our on pitch investment, why didn't we spend a sent of that 80 million on world class talent?

Rooney never considered leaving the club until recently, yes, Ferguson's attitude may be a huge part of this possible move, but his attitudes RE: United's future investment also is a part.

Perhaps you can start your own supporter union group called the 'Sons of Busby' similar to what we did, might be the first time the term SOB's doesn't refer to something else with Manc supporters as well.

The Manchester United Supporter's Trust has been alive for 5 years, ever since the Glazers took over, before that they were Shareholder's United, a group trying to limit the dangers of the PLC, it ended in vain.

You're so ****ing funny.

Unlike your Spirit of Wankly we didn't invite the Glazers in with open arms gloating about having shiny new stadium and competing with Chelsea. We knew from the start the Glazers were bad, bad, bad, bad, bad news. We did everything you did, we made some banners and sang some songs. It achieved a fat lot of **** all.

We've had a shareholders trust trying to buy up enough shares to have a controlling interest for years. There was a lot of apathy but the full horror of this Glazer car crash hopefully will wake people up.

I've heard from people involved in the 'Norwich' campaign that a lot of them have just given up - as people that buy the yellow and green stuff just go straight into the official club store afterwards anyway.

I think it's going to be staggeringly difficult for you to drive them out. Their terms are much more favourable, and I doubt they'll be running around to every bank known to man for loans - that the fans can play a role in stopping.

Your own commercial success is what will eventually bring you down I think. It's such a commercial juggernaught, that there's no chance of stopping it - and that's what needs to be done if you're going to overthrow them.
