Ross Lyon interview

What he meant when he mentioned he wants the 3rd year players to step up, he is hoping they step up an become very good players an continue to develop.

Wasnt saying there not that great an need to improve.

Hope he learns about Deboer an sees him as a better option than Crowley, whether hes played as defensive mid or defensive forward doesnt matter hes better than Crowley now.

He def knows how to beat us in the midfield an stoppages so he should be able to fix that area of our game.

An love the point he made about MJ is something we have all been saying for far too long.
The talent is there has all the skills to be very good, just needs to get his mind 100% on the job.

It will be interesting to see if Lyon opts for his usual trading for players over drafting kids. If Lyon takes the trading in players approach , I will be getting seriously worried. I guess we will find out in the coming weeks.

If we get Mitch Clark and manage to hold on to our compensation pick he can do what he wants. As long as he doesn't target hacks.

Brett Peake. We can't afford to stop drafting kids as our list is only three quarters built IMO.

But this years draft is weak so our compensation pick next year if used correctly could nab us a gem while Mitch will fill an imporant need in our list. We'll still have pick 34 and 52 to use in this years draft. I don't believe the club will let Ross repeat some of the stupid decisions that were made at St Kilda.

Well I hope so. If we get Clark with our first rounder & Jordan Lockyer with our second rounder , there will be no complaints from me.

OMG he didn't mention Barlow!!!! D-d-do ya think maybe he's g-g-gonna trade him or something :(

Seriously...he probably just forgot about him, everyone is reading wayyyy too much into that, do you honestly think Lyon doesn't rate Barlow?

So absurd that people are genuinely worried that Ross Lyon would rate Ryan Crowley over Michael Barlow.

Maybe someone should post it on the main board.

NEWS FLASH!! - R.Lyon to trade M.Barlow

I get the feeling that Ross isn't that hands on with trades etc. - many head coaches aren't. They discuss their needs with the recruiting team and they go to work with the coach simply vetting/vetoing/having the final say on things.

Especially this post-season, I suspect Lloyd and Bond and the rest will be doing the bulk of the trade and recruiting work. i.e. I don't see a huge shift in our recent list management patterns.

it sounded like lloyd and bond had worded him up on who's being traded and he's happy to be aware of it. definitely seems to be someone who lets the recruiting team do their work.

very impressive interview. i like this straight talk without any disingenuous doublespeak. it's going to be a great preseason for development. hopefully that culture of excellence he speaks about will infuse the club quickly.

What an impressive interview. I like the fact he sees holes in our best 18. He knows theres work to be done and by now our list would know things have just got a little tougher to hold their positions. It would have been easier to pump up our list, thus laying the blame on injuries and Harvey.
Sounds like he will introduce the kids as well. I do however get the feeling there are some Saints players looking west and Ross is looking straight back at them. Lets see what trde week brings.

This was a fantastic interview which only left one thing out.

Lyon approached the FFC, not the other way around.

He wanted to coach us.

A friend on FB posted the article, I don't ever read the West funnily enough...
I frequent the Herald Sun here in VIC for my footy news and articles.

so with all the rallying and support for Ross, what will be an acceptable performance as coach before he has the wrath of supporters and club - if we don't make the top six .....or the eight....will he have failed ? What would be considered a successful result in a change of coach for 2012?

I believe Ross has the potentional to win a flag for us, it all depends on how quickly the playing group gel and respond to the coaches gameplan.

Imagine the confused messages and style of play last year the have to get out of the system and start working like a well oiled machine. If the players are serious enough about applying themselves it could take 4-5 games for us to see the difference or it may just take most of next season. The optimist nine says it will all be worked out in the 4 nab cup games!

Just like that old shampoo advert: 'It's not going to happen overnight, but it will happen.'

I think everything offensively will really just be simplified to begin with. Set roles, simple transitions, straight forward structures etc. They will still fit in with the long term plan, but essentially it'll be back to basics. We've got the talent to beat most teams with that approach. As the season progresses, Lyon will start to tweak things to suit the long term plan more and more.

There was nothing complicated about the way St Kilda went about beating us or WC at Subiaco in recent years.

In basketball terms - this ones for you Moo - we'll start the season with a simple motion offence (3-out, 2-in, pass and screen away) and all the additional off-ball stuff will be added along as we go.

Defensively, however, I think we'll notice some major differences from the NAB Cup onwards. That should be the pre-season focus. If Lyon can get the defence right, we've got the talent, to let the offence take care of itself initially.

...If Lyon can get the defence right, we've got the talent, to let the offence take care of itself initially.

Still plenty of work needed at training and preseason games to get the forwards operating better than 2011.

Pav moving back forward is only a small step towards fixing our 'offence'. Getting the 2nd and 3rd tall working good leads and understanding how the structure up especially if we draft a best 22 KPF (Kersten) could take time to get working.
In fact I don't think Ross will need to much work in tweaking our defence, it's just the players mindset and attitude that needs changing back there. Suma will obviously play the big part in getting the most out of Mayne/Bradley/MJ/Anthony/Clarke as forwards...

I wonder if Ross will have a special focus in a certain playing group that he knows needs the most improvement.
