Surprise!
Yep... I've bagged Ross Lyon in the past, and so have others...

When Grant Thomas was there, there were "grantisms" ... "Exiting Harvey In" ... and the lot...

Here's the pearler from Ross Lyon.

“At the end of the day we walk away the losers and we have to regroup. We’re 3-3 and they’re 2-4, so it’s not panic stations for us.”

Oh dear... you mean the panic stations are to used had we been 2-4? Or perhaps our panic stations are set at Melbourne / West Coast's 2008 benchmark? Let's take it away for Ross Lyon!

Sorry, but I think this guy makes some lousy excuses....

He was too blame for that rubbish gameplan last night. And when I listened to him blame the players I was furious at him.

We used to be an Exciting team to watch a few years ago. I miss Thomo and those great games we were apart of.

If I saw Butters down the street I would Smash that C**t for the turmoil he has caused this club and where he has led us today.

Grant took us to 2 Pre-lims with all the injuries we had and was told he wasn't apart of the clubs future.

Lyon is a great coach but he doesn't suit our team. We have really made some mistakes over the last couple years.

We choke football games with this defensive short kicking around maintaining possession football style that only loses us games. All players were playing better under Grant.

Could Grant ever return to the saints, he is a great coach after all. He knows this team inside out.

Is anyone else sick of the stupid decisions this club continually makes.

Rod butterss should of been the one to go, not gt.

With all the crap we went through in 2004, i.e injuries, off field incidences, absolute joke of facilities (Seriously the moe under 10's has better facilities, i went through the saints weights room and it looked like it was all brought from a garage sale.) we were a pretty damn good team to get within a goal of the eventual premiers at their home ground.

I still can't believe we sacked the 2 best coaches in the history of the st. kilda footy club.

And to replace the guy with this bafoon who doesn't understand that kicking goals is the key to winning games.

If only we got our shit together :(

Geez do we have to go over this again.

GT is not the answer.. Never has and never was. He failed to get us to what we al thought we could achieve. We went backwards quite a lot in his last 18 months.

what does concern me though is Lyon baggin the players in the press saying that they didnt follow the game plan ?!?

Well, where did it come from then ? Im at a loss to explain that.

We did when he first arrive needed to play more accountable football, because our lack of defense and pressure was disgraceful.

That has now been fixed and what made us a good team back then, the attacking naure has now gone. He has fixed the problem and now made our greatest strenght, or biggest weakness.

We cant seem to win.

You guys are very tough on Lyon........the man can coach, you have a great line up of "elite" players but your mid/fringe players aren't up to the the plan that wins premierships and Lyon is trying to get them to play. The game is about kicking more goals than the opposition and each opposition has a different game style. St Kilda just can't vary their game style consistantly to beat some teams. Stick with him!!!

I just can't see why we play stop start, defensive football. Every team in the comp would love to have kosi and riewoldt sitting in their forward line. when we played fast attacking brand of football we smashed the dogs in the first qtr. Why couldn't we continue with that?

I may have jumped the gun on the harsh criticism but it is just terribly frustrating to be a saints supporter.

We move the ball slowly,we once again only kicked 12 goals. We play all our players up the ground and we allow sides to get back and double team roo.

Our mids dont kick goals and Del once again touched the footy when the game was all over.

We used to be a very exciting team that played attacking football.Ross and Elshaugh what are you doing.Get thommo back

GT was not afraid to try different things on game day. While there were some massive stuffups, there were also many successes. Ross seems to have his plan and stick to it even when its going down the gurgler. Also the skills of the players dont seem as good as previous years, and I don't see this as a sign of great coaching.
I think the cats have proven that stoppy starty footy is not the be all and end all.

I don't think the gameplan is completely to blame. Everytime we got it to BJ where he should be able to spot up a player on a lead, there was no movement or efforts to lead which he could go to. I hate Lyons lack of a plan B though.

Grant Thomas HAD NO PLAN B or C or D or any other plan!!!!!!!!!!

When will the super coaches learn that the object of the game is to OUT SCORE the opposition !!

Today they think to win a game is to stop the opposition scoring!!!!

FFS we have the forward line to kill anyone.....Let them catch us

Am starting to doubt Lyon. we are 30% through the season and were awful last night. Luke Ball is finished, as much as I hate to say it. Saints are going nowhere fast, sorry slowly(as in midfield.)
They should sack Gehrig now and promote Eddy for pace and endurance URGENTLY. This isnt bush footy, once G had retiremnet thoughts then there is no return.

its only round 6 were playing shit and were still 9th.
You are fool southern star. We are not going to make the top 8. FFS get those Rose-Coloured-Glasses off or I will personally smash them for you. We are the biggest joke in the AFL!!!!!

The damage was done when BUTTHEAD sacked GT. That simple act has destroyed the fabric of our team. Oh how I wish we could get GT back as the senior coach. His rotating captaincy, his leadership groups, his community camps and his overseas training camps all laughed at at the time. No look at how many teams are doing all these things.

Everyone was saying that GT had no plan A, B or C. Well guess what, Ros Lyon does not have any game plan at all. The only thing he employs is defencive/accountable Sydney shit which has seen us go from the equal top scoring team to the least scoring team in 12 months.

We must re-instate GT as our coach if he would be willing to come back. He may not be the best coach out there, but for some reason he new how to get our team playing great attacking football.

Plese, if there is anyone out there that agrees with me, please contact me via PM. I would like to get the ball rolling to get GT back to the Saints. I have no idea if this is impossible or not but I would not be able to live with myself if I did not try something.

I think people are forgetting (including me) that Ross Lyon is only in his 2nd year as coach, he isn't going to set the world on fire.

We're 3-3, 9th on the ladder/Equal 7th and definately not out of the finals race by any stretch of the imagination.

Our game last week against Essendon, Was that under Ross Lyon's gameplan?

I think everyone believes our list is top 4, premiership quality, but obviously it isn't. To be honest our midfield is shithouse, we have no match winners, no game breakers, no one with freakish ability, no-one too add that bit of excitement and no decent midfield depth. We have many 2nd/3rd rate players but no first class, all quality mids except for Lenny Hayes. I think we should seriously make a play for Ben Cousins or Daniel Kerr (if the rumours are true) or possibly trade away someone valuble for a top 10 pick.

Yes i've made a complete 180 on my original post, that was purely spur of the moment frustration :p:D

Next 4 games we play Richmond, Collingwood, Brisbane(away) and Melbourne, get our shit together and play like we did against essendon we could win 3 possibly even 4.

Our start to the year has been a bit turbulent, hopefully in 4 weeks time we will be in much better times.:thumbsu::)

Does anybody think that there are remarkable similarities between Ross Lyon and wait for it... Tim Watson?

Think about it. In both situations, Lyon and Watson took over teams that been under fairly long-term coaches who had come VERY close to winning a flag. When Lyon and Watson came in, they completely changed the entire thought-process of the players. Furthermore, I remember seeing footage of Watson coaching - he treated it like a classroom, all very complicated.

That's the thing I seem to notice about the Ross Lyon game-plan - it's just so complicated. It's all, push back, go to the corners, move around the sides, then square it back up, get a lead, then slow down, rah, rah, rah. The poor boys looked just darn confused last night. They just can't wrap their head around the Lyon game plan: it goes completely against their natural instincts, which would be okay if it was simple, but it's far too complex for them (or let's face it, most of us) to really fathom.

Say what you like about GT, his game plan might not have been the best, but it was a heck of a lot simpler. That's not a call for his return, but he realised we're not dealing with brain surgeons and rocket scientists.

The other thing that reminds me of Watson is the TERRIBLE skill errors - these have gone chronically downhill. That was the same with Watson - the boys were spending so much training-time figuring out what the heck the guy was wanting them to do strategy-wise, skills were not maintained. And fumbles, clangers, etc ensued.

Is Ross Lyon the new Tim Watson?

Why did you remove my reply?

southern star has actually quoted my reply...could you please tell me what is wrong with it and why it was removed?

If you removed it because you did not agree with my opinion then you yourself should be removed of your responsibilityof being a Moderator. This is a Fan Forum where people should be allowed to come on and post their opinions. You do not have the right to delete a post simply because you do not agree with it. If this was your reason then that is pathetic.

I did not remove a post in this thread, nor did any other moderator. Nothing has been deleted. If you are talking about the post that Southern Star quoted, try looking at the bottom of page 1 of this thread.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion and we encourage debate but you have pushed this agenda for far too long.

We've been more than fair with you and given you the opportunity to post here since your Saintsational bannings but enough is enough.

Reinstating GT is unrealistic at this stage. He's gone out of his way in the media to say Harves should have retired, and has nothing positive to say about the Saints anymore. The team would have lost a hell of a lot of respect for him I imagine and even if it was possible it just...won't happen.

Give him a few more weeks, ____, give him till the end of the season before we talk about firing him, we're not exactly gonna lose anyone of vital importance from now till next year. Gehrigs impact is minimal, Harves is a legend but he's no where near his best...who else may retire? Max still has a couple years, as do King and Gardy...we've still got a few more years with this core group of players to have a crack. We just need the team to become that, a team.

And yeah, an attacking gameplan would be nice too. flipping potentially the 2 best forwards, 2 gun crumbers in Milne and Schneider and Gardiner chipping in. Hopefully it'll work itself out in time and we'll see some awesome footy in weeks/seasons to come.
