I reckon the Jordan Lewis decision was a costly move. Would have been ideal as captain over the last few seasons and the next. Just my two cents.

Lewis would not be playing if he stayed at Hawthorn, let alone be skipper. Dee's are only playing him now because they committed to him. Will get dropped and play vfl at some stage in 2019.
As for the current Hawks, I remember a couple of matches this year where Shiels played real captain style matches. He always plays with the team first mentality and is confident behind the microphone. Gets my vote with Izzy and Gunners duel vice.

If we get to the point where Shiels is our 5th best mid, we will have the best midfield in the league. Bring it on.
 
I don't mind who gets the nod. All the guys being mentioned would be worthy.
Just pick the guy who's game won't be affected by the responsibility.

Yup, certainly our midfield would be strong if Shiels is our 5th best mid. He was a long way ahead of 4th spot last year, but it is not inconceivable that by end of trade period next year he could have slipped to 5th.

I think having a captain who could potentially be borderline best 22 within the next 12 months (not because he isn't any good, but because we may have 4 better than him in the position he plays) makes Shiels a less than ideal option. Everyone seems to agree we'd like to have one more elite mid, and will be targeting cogs next trade period. If that happens there is no way Shiels is above our 4th best mid. Certainly, you can be captain without being elite, but I just don't think it is the ideal situation.

Whoever took the role after Hodge was going to struggle simply based on the above words.
Interesting that I fear we don't have a player of this ilk and that a more media, sponsor savvy captain could be chosen.
But as Don said, with multiple leaders in a group, is the captain as pivotal as they once were?

Internally mullet man has a heap of respect from the players. Let’s his actions do the talking, hates the bombers with a passion which earns a few extra credits for mine and has earned his place. Smith and Shiels would be equally worthy. Exciting times.
 
As was the case with Richie Vandenberg, making Stratton captain would be a very Hawthorn thing to do. Would totally head**** all the numpties in the media who only go by Chumpion Data "stats".

Think this is a great idea with the players voting. Provides everyone with the opportunity to demonstrate their cases and new players a chance to be included in the assessment.

Nobody has a player of Hodges ilk to be captain, not even Brisbane.

I'm recent time only Hodge, Voss and Carey*
Have that natural leadership and match turning brilliance. All had questionable off field moments (Carey abhorrent ones) but were very popular socially in the clubs and the players felt taller knowing they were there.

If we get another like Hodge we'll be looking at another dominant era, I think Jaeger could be it. Has everything to be the face of the club, tough, dedicated, outstanding player, good with the media, good looking. At the moment still needs to show he has the game sense to coach on field, which is understandable as he was just getting consistent games last season so now should know the structures well and have confidence in his own positioning now to start setting up others.

Can't believe how much interest this is garnering in the media. Back page of HS today, 'Stars to Vote on New Hawks Captain' or something along those lines. Umm... seems like we are using the same selection process we always have and the same as most clubs probably do :think: Nothing to see here really until the announcement is made, go beat up a story elsewhere :rolleyes:

I think the different thing is that each player communicates his votes to the team. Can't remember that happening before...
