Thank you
I loved listening to that - grumpy old bastard isn’t he![]()
Lewis would not be playing if he stayed at Hawthorn, let alone be skipper. Dee's are only playing him now because they committed to him. Will get dropped and play vfl at some stage in 2019.Been a good captain, but right time to hand it over. Needs to be burden free for his own game and therefore the team.
I personally don't see any obvious captaincy choice. Mostly due to the fact of it impacting someone's own game.
Cannot by Gunston. Has too much to do. Back, forward and all over the field. Needs to have a clear head.
Smith? Have seen Smith disappear from a bunch of games over the last few years.
Shiels? Maybe. Can see him doing the job, but is he a little too quiet for the job? No idea.
Others...
Mitchell? possibly.
O'Meara? too soon, re: body and consistency
McEvoy? dunno
Stratton? probably not.
I reckon the Jordan Lewis decision was a costly move. Would have been ideal as captain over the last few seasons and the next. Just my two cents.

If we get to the point where Shiels is our 5th best mid, we will have the best midfield in the league. Bring it on.I don't have a massive problem with Shiels from a personality point of view. Those outside the club are probably not in a great position to assess on field leadership abilities. Just because he's not belting someone every second week doesn't mean he isn't a good leader. A big physical presence isn't the only form of leadership.
I'm more concerned about choosing a captain that doesn't have to continually justify his place in the side. Shiels is currently our third best mid. What if Wingard ends up playing more mid than forward, we grab someone like cogs as a FA next year, and say Worpel continues to develop strongly, as does Howe. How long would it be before Shiels is borderline best 22 under that scenario? I think the ideal captain is someone who is so good that they are still easily best 22 even when in a form slump, irrespective of how other players around them improve. Hodge and S.Mitchell were both such players, and I'm not sure Shiels is. In fact I'm fairly sure he isn't.
It goes without saying he will always give a different view to the normThank you

Don Scott is highly entertaining.
Interesting what he says about born leaders.
I was in second form at Blackburn High School when he was in 6th form. He was a leader then. Think he's a natural leader.
WWOS posted a video a couple of days back to the effect of 'new hawks captain to shave off mullet for charity'.Rumours circulating that it’s Strats. A somewhat left field, but nonetheless excellent choice if so.

Just impressed that the club is going to decide after preseason as it gives a chance for people to step up and claim it!
Nobody has a player of Hodges ilk to be captain, not even Brisbane.Whoever took the role after Hodge was going to struggle simply based on the above words.
Interesting that I fear we don't have a player of this ilk and that a more media, sponsor savvy captain could be chosen.
But as Don said, with multiple leaders in a group, is the captain as pivotal as they once were?
Isn't he good mates with Daniher? Can't hate them that much.Internally mullet man has a heap of respect from the players. Let’s his actions do the talking, hates the bombers with a passion which earns a few extra credits for mine and has earned his place. Smith and Shiels would be equally worthy. Exciting times.

Nothing to see here really until the announcement is made, go beat up a story elsewhere
Can't believe how much interest this is garnering in the media. Back page of HS today, 'Stars to Vote on New Hawks Captain' or something along those lines. Umm... seems like we are using the same selection process we always have and the same as most clubs probably doNothing to see here really until the announcement is made, go beat up a story elsewhere
