Re: Round 1 2011 Team

So you have him ahead of Vesper?

That wasn't obvious by my selection? ;)

Vesper looks a natural small forward, which I think we have a few of whereas I think Djerrkura has the ability to be a part of our midfield rotation as well as playing as a small forward.

I guess we could add Ves to the team and shift Gia to a midfield role, but I think this makes us a bit slow around the ball.

OK, thanks. Also from your selection, you reckon Jones will play CHF this year. I'd like to see this too, but realistically would he get many games this year there? How has he looked at training?

Jones is training well. He was very impressive in some match practice last Saturday, took a couple of very strong marks including one 'hanger'.

Obviously has a bit to work on, but the raw tools are good and I think he will be around the mark come rd 1.

Great news. The half forward line looks very interesting, and two out of three are quick. Given Higgins' problems and absence last season, it's pretty well brand new.

Yep, a Half Forward line of Sherman, Jones and Higgins looks likely.

Add the Full Forward line of Giansiracusa, Hall and Grant, and that looks pretty potent.

With blokes like Murphy, Hill, Vespa likely to spend significant time up forward, and the midfielders (especially Cooney, Griffen, Gilbee, Boyd and Ward) rotating through, we look capable of some serious high scoring this season...

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

The Balance of the team will be interesting. I'm not sure they will go with Jones and a second ruck, we look a bit big maybe?

I'm thinking we'd have a second ruck, Jone's spot would be taken by another small. But if he's carving it up come round one then it would be hard not to have him in there.

Looks like with Hudson and Hall out during he opening rounds of NAB, it will be a big opportunity for Jones, Roughead and Cordy to fight their claims for a place in Round 1 team. At this stgae, Jones leads this trio, but would love to see Cordy with his confidence up in the seniors...

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Not too sure about Sherman on a back flank. Would say that is out of position for him.
In my view a back 6 isnt what it use to be its more of a back 4 with 2 attacking play makers pushing up the ground. I like the idea of allowing Sherman some freedom to run and carry up the wings well getting sometime behind the ball to get use to our game plan a bit more. Most new players seem to struggle for the first few games in "getting" it

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Hey people is it me or doesnt anyone have any faith in brodie moles, imo he will be a regular in our top 22.

There is plenty of competition for midfield spots.

Only Eagleton and an occasional Akermanis is missing but we have added Sherman, Wallis and Liberatore (and maybe Djerrkura) plus have those missing with injury for large parts in Higgins, Ward and Reid.

It is a very deep quality midfield.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

I see the team lining up like this:

Wood Lake Morris
Murphy Williams Gilbee
Griffen Boyd Picken
Sherman Roughead Higgins
Grant Hall Giansiracusa

Hudson Cooney Ward

Cross Veszpremi Hill Djerkurra

That team to me looks really well balanced, 5 genuine talls amidst a really solid group of runners....some nice pace and class on every line.

With Lake now an unlikely starter, this may need a shake up??...Could we get away with Morris at Full Back and have a mobile defender in the back pocket in round 1 against the Bombers?

Like whom?

I guess we will see through the NAB Cup matches what are options are like, but at present there are too many names jumping out to fill this role.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Is Wood this player?

Wood is likely to have Hargrave's back pocket spot at least until he returns. So, we will need to find another backman to cover Lake's absence in the early rounds. Reid? Howard? Cordy!?

As Pigdog wrote, we'll have a better idea after the NAB Cup/Challenge series. Hopefully Howard puts his hand up as a Hargrave replacement as his running ability and deadly leg cannon suits the new interchange rules perfectly. Williams to take Lake's role, Morris to take Tommy's role and Wood to take the third tall.

It's not ideal but with Essendon, Brisbane and GC our first 3 opponents, we might just get away with it.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

It will be hard to keep Mitch Wallis out. He is poised, slick and composed.

Rocket is not puting too much expectation on him (or Junior Libba), but regardless of our midfireld strength, Wallis is an option that will be irresesistable, come round 1.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

With Hargrave not returning until May/June, he is surely on the long-term injury list.

Can Mitch Hahn sniff an opportunity?...Would he be able to fill a role for us down back, or is he past it? On Saturday's intra club evidence, he appears reinvigorated, though still a long shot...

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

I'll post my team when trade week ends...
Hmm some delay there  ok here goes

Wood Morris Gilbee
Murphy Williams Picken
Griffen Boyd Wallis
Sherman Jones Higgins
Grant Hall Giansiracusa

Hudson Cooney Ward

Cross Moles Djerkurra Roughead

I've assumed Lake will miss r1. On the plus side we seem to be spoilt for choice with midfielders.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

B: Morris - Lake - Wood
HB: Gilbee - Williams - Murphy
C: Sherman - Boyd - Picken
HF: Ward - Jones- Higgins
F Giansircusa - Hall - Grant
R: Hudson - Cooney - Griffen
I: Roughead - Wallis - Cross
Sub: Josh Hill

Was my thought before the intra club but i would not be shocked if we used Mitch Hahn as the Sub this year as he is able to play in almost all spots and would be someone who would work well with a bit of the pace out of the game. Atm id have Djer ahead of Vez as a chance to play.

If Lake does not happen to play (and i wouldnt be shocked if he was rested so that he is right for Brisbane)

B: Hahn - Morris - Wood
HB: Gilbee - Williams - Murphy
C: Sherman - Boyd - Picken
HF: Ward - Jones- Higgins
F Giansircusa - Hall - Grant
R: Hudson - Cooney - Griffen
I: Roughead - Wallis - Cross
Sub: Josh Hill

Now this side is a bit light in height down back but worse comes to worse Jones can be sent back as cover with Roughead moving into that 3rd tall role.

I think Hahn is done as a defender, just to slow. His best hope is as a bash and crash forward

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

Another week of pre season and we are a little wiser but there are still question marks on a few positions.

Based on the intra club I think Djerrkura is in pole position for a small forward/midfield role. Question marks on Vezspremi at this early stage.

The 2 way battle for the second ruck spot is still up in the air. I thought Minson got the honors on Roughy in the intra club.

Liam Jones is in most peoples rd 1 teams, but based in the intra club he wouldn't be CHF just yet. Plus I remain unsure if we would have Hall, Jones and Grant.

Mitch Hahn could be an early SUB candidate, can play in a variety of roles.

Wallis and Liberatore could play round one, the problem for them is a spot and then there are blokes like Moles and Addision who also played very well in the practice match.

Re: Round 1 2011 Team

I don't think I agree that we are any closer to knowing our Round 1 line-up.

I think our top 18 pick themselves, then there are about a dozen players battling it out for the remaining spots.

Based on performances in Saturday's intra match, here's how I see the progress of our players on the cusp of selection...

Increased their claims for selection:
Wallis
Moles
Djerrkura
Hahn
Minson
Addison
Liberatore

Remain neutral:
Roughead
Hill
Hooper

Slipped back in the running:
Veszpremi
Jones

At this stage Cordy and Skinner remain as 'developing', while Reid will need to get some match time before he can be fairly rated.

Yep good post. I agree with Cordy also. He has missed so much footy. He simply needs to be playing footy and getting some continuity. The aim for him this year is to play as many games as possible for Willi firsts and if he finds some touch perhaps a Bulldogs debut later in the year.

Skinner is exciting but he needs to develop this year. Sammy Reid just needs some luck with the shoulders.
