How many in the family... There are some surprisingly cheap options in east Melbourne right next to the G.. Knightsbridge apartments and magnolia boutique hotel are fairly dated but clean and have very good rates... I often stay at knightsbridge as it's a 5 min walk to the ground

Compared to Adelaide maybe, generally I find its pretty fine, depending on what time you are wanting to drive around of course.
There are certainly areas to avoid, but if you are going to be driving around in the middle of the day, the streets won't be too bad.
