One week to go. Can't wait. Unfortunately Mitchell is out suspended (he and Everitt own Sydney), but here is how i'd like to see us line up.

B: Osborne Hay Thurgood
HB: Brennan Croad Hodge
C: Smith Vandenberg Lonie
HF: Miller Holland Franklin
F: Williams Dixon Beaumont
R: Everitt Crawford Bateman

INT: Jacobs Clarke Brown Campbell

- Miller, Thurgood and Franklin to debut.
- Holland to play (Barker injured) only as a decoy, possibly allowing Franklin, DIxon or Beaumont a height mis-match.
- Loss of Mitchell will take away midfield grunt. Would like to see Smith and Hodge given brief spells on the ball.
- Weak 22. Quite a few players i'd like to leave out are getting a game - Holland, Clarke, Brown, Jacobs.

It will be a long year and we won't win too many games but hopefully the likes of Thurgood, Franklin and Miller can give us something to cheer about. All three have looked very good this pre-season.

lekkas(inj)
mitchell (suspended)
barks (inj)
outa best possible 22

B. thurgood hay ozzy
HB jacoobs croad hodge
C bateman crawford lonie
HF miller holland brown
F williamns dixon beaumont

R spider smith vanders

I. cambell/taylor franklin lewis ries

thurgood.....brings a smile 2 everyones face....looks good :D
hay............ please no injuries this year
ozzy...AC will rotate through midfield because he loves mungrel he has
jacobs......underdone but we need him firing down back, needs game time
croad.......will frustrate us again this year at times but will hold down chb
hodge......midfield 4 mine but has found a nice little niche down back
bateman....time 2 stand up 4 us this year and play every game
crawf.......captain courageous, enough said
lonie........written him off last year but has shown me some good signs in 2005
miller.......gun preseason lets see him translate that 2 AFL seniors 4 22 games
holland....we all no what we get, but its better with him than without
brown......4 mine would have him down back, although kicking a worry
williams....in a great side he would be a gun, gunna get soem good defenders in 2005
dixon&beaumont......no better options yet
spider......close if not the best ruckman in league, ???? how will the new circle affect him
smith.......wont line up here but this is my position i would like 2 see him play
vanders...struggled all year 2 get a kick, hope things change quickly

lewis........give the kid some game time , watched him play in intra club 4 the kids side against the guns and he towelled the likes of clarke/greene/ries, already in front of these imo
ries.........no way in our best 22 but thats where we r at in 2005

Apparantly Barker will be fit for Round 1, as will Dixon and Everitt.

FB: Osborne - Hay - Jacobs
HB: Smith - Croad - Thurgood
C: Bateman - Ries - Hodge
HF: Miller - Barker - Lonie
FF: Williams - Holland - Dixon
R: Everitt - Vandenberg - Crawford

INT: Campbell - Franklin - Clarke - Brown
EMG: Lewis - Taylor - Greene

Fair side for us. I think we are REALLY gonna miss Mitchell, the SCG was built specifically for him. But hopefully, for our sake, Ries can do his job for a week.
Can't wait to see Miller, and hopefully Thurgood and Franklin line up for us. It's getting very exciting to have new, fresh faces causing so much excitment, down at Hawthorn, we're not really used to it!

Carn' the Hawks in 2005

Given Ries has been left out of the last two practice match squads, I don't think he's part of Clarkson's plan for round 1.

Perhaps Sewell will be the one to play in Mitchell's absence. It's a real pity he had to get himself suspended as he has a great record against Sydney and has been in good form this pre-season. Midfield and forward line will struggle round 1 and I think we'll lose by about 6 goals.

Miller, Thurgood and Franklin to debut for mine.

Lewis is not quite there. Give him a full game on the ball for Box Hill.

I actually believe that Clarkson has been playing Ries in the ressies to give him full games on the ball. But then, that might be just how I see it.

Since 2001 we have won 4 and lost 2 against Sydney. Even the team from last year only lost by 1 point.

I wouldn't rule us out of this one yet.

I'm going down from Coolangatta for the game. Any BF Hawks Board posters going to the pre-match function - would like to meet up with you.

True, though it has been Mitchell and Everitt who have owned Sydney in recent times. Sammy's suspension hurts.

\QUOTE=Rod Stroker]As an interested onlooker, I noticed one glaring ommission from the teams posted above :
Matthew Ball
Do you not believe he is in your best 22 ? Not worthy of a spot ahead of debutantes Miller, Thurgood and Franklin ?
Or is he injured ?[/QUOTE]

Ball is not good enough that is it in a nutshell and whoever wants Ries starting in the guts i mean really.

My ideal side for RD1 would look like this:

B: Ozzy Hay Jacobs
HB: Smith Croad Hodge
C: Brown Crawford Lonie
HF: Franklin Barker Beaumont
F: Williams Holland Dixon
R: Everitt Vandenburg Bateman
B: Campbell Thurgood Miller Clarke (arrrrrhhhhhh)

Haven't seen or heard much of Roughead this pre-season. Is he injured or are the hawks jus being patient with him?
Rolled his ankle. Been out for quite a few weeks but just came back on Saturday and played half a game with Box Hill. Still looked very proppy on his ankle though and was icing it after the game.

Looks pretty close to the side that will start in Round 1 IMO. A bit of height in the forward line with Franklin,Barker,Beaumont,Holland and Dixon. Surely someone can take a mark out of all them?

Osborne Hay Jaccobs
Smith Croad Hodge
Bateman Crawford Lonie
Williams Barker Franklin
Holland Dixon Miller

Everitt, Vandenburg, Ries

Int: Sewell, Cambell, Thurgood, Brennan:

Notes: Mitchell suspended (replace Ries when back), Lekkas injured. Sewell and Ries to play to cover loss of Mitchell.

bp. Osborne Hay Thurgood
hbf. Hodge (I'd play him forward but the coach wont) Croad Smith
c. Lonie Ries Bateman
hf. .. geez err.. uumm.. well maybe ahh.. probably end up something like Beaumont Holland Barker
f. Williams Everitt Miller
R. Campbell Vandenberg Crawford
Int. throw a buncha names in a hat.. :( Personally I'd have Clarke Ladson Brennan Franklin (if his pre-seasons been as good as the wraps).

No Jacobs, Dixon, Brown. Holland in by default more or less (who else have we got thats 6'5 and meant to be a chf).. :( Tried to minimise poorly skilled blokes (hence no Brown) but Ries hands are good in tight. Clarke can shut a bloke down and Vanders is the Capt afterall. Miller I'm going on practice match form but he was running around with the BH ressies not that long ago. Hoping his debut might be a tad more convincing than Willo's was (twice over). Franklin.. maybe just maybe we do have one 'out of the box' that good. Thurgood gets the third tall defender role ahead of Jacobs cause he looks like he gives a damn and form leading up (from reports) has been better anyways.

Bit of newness to the side though (like most everyone else) and that is the single most encouraging thing I reckon for the last twelve months.

The start is here, lets hope the journey is a good one.

just on hodge and my dream team.

can you people see him having a big year? i think he is due but he is a risk compared to a more consistant type like nathan brown however he has a bigger upside. is there any truth to the train of thought he might play a loose role across half back?

Loose man, no. (fortunately) In defense, yes. (unfortunately) Playmaker, yes, (finally).

So far this pre-season, in defense he's been played on a lesser forward so he can leave his man when he sees fit and help out our bombarded backline. Going the other way, he has been used as a link man - in a quarter-back Lappin/Dal Santo type role.

He certainly has the footskills to play there and he should get a fair bit of the ball unless opposition coaches start tagging him (let's fact us, aside from Crawf and maybe Mitch, no one else is worthy of a tag, really). IMO he's still not being used to his potential until he's on the ball, at least in 10-min bursts each quarter.

Having said that, at least Clarkson recognises that Hodge isn't a KP unlike our former coach...
