Autopsy Round 1 v Tigers - If only the quarters were longer

SOS has shown very little at AFL level as mid. Has barely had game time there. I really have no idea what makes you think this.
Tagging Fyfe doesn't count.

Hasn't been given much of an opportunity as a full time mid at AFL level but showed a heap at VFL level.
For me when he drifts up field he has great smarts and game sense. Smart knock on's and uses the ball really well as a link up distributor.
Can also be a bit of a miss match in the air as he can take a grab.

I just think he is better utilised up the field. :)

On the whole “Richmond took their foot of the pedal” thing; they’re an experienced premiership team who made a confident start against our considerably
less experienced and successful team.
We adjusted and then were relatively evenly matched for most of the game.
It’s round 1 in a compromised season; if they could’ve smashed up by 12 goals, they would’ve.

they definitely would have been tested and perhaps caught out if we had of got better results from our f50 entries. our inability to convert more definitely let them off the hook. we'll put these ferals away sooner or later.

From how high?

I’m really worried now that Dow will be a bust of a pick 3 but Setters will improve

These were the guys that needed to step up and take us to the next level, I would swing the axe on both this week.

I can't defend Dow any longer, needs to start finding the pill, Setterfield I was very bullish on taking the next step, but you can't reward that effort with a game next week.

Obrien and Stocker/Kennedy in

Needs to get more involved like a number of players. He also got a shot at goal from a free kick when someone else took a mark so evens out the Martin one.

I thought he was good, competed all night, and also don't forget that Cuner's 1st was a play on free kick to SOS at the top of the square, so he was directly responsible for 3 of our goals.

Nitpicking but getting a free kick = responsible for the goal...[emoji1745]

When you stop the ball in mid flight at the top of the square, and are then paid a free kick for both having your arms chopped and also being held, it counts as being responsible for the goal, far more than having the ball dribble to you after everyone stopped and then being allowed to kick it.

Just think that people are being hard on him! He's a lead up forward, who's job is to kick a couple a game and help the linkage between the front and back halves. Last year he was pretty consistently good in that role.

But this game, he's asked to play full forward, was pretty much the only player to contest the marks up forward, still kicks 2 of twelve, and at least helped in the creation of a couple of others, and yet he's shit????

IMHO if you are looking for culprits for our forward difficulties you have 3:

1) Teague, as an ex forward coach, he should understand that the linkage and dynamic between the forwards is just as critical as it is for the backline. So FFS stop rotating midfielders through the forward line, I understand that a couple have teams have players like Martin and Fyfe, but we don't. So if a player can't make into the first 8-9 mid fielders, play them as a mid in the 2nd's not as some sort of makeshift forward, and start resting the mids on the bench not the forward line, or at least not a much as we do now.

I mean really how happy would everyone be if we were using the backline to blood future mids, and as a way to give the mids a breather????

2) Our mids! Our disposal to our forwards is terrible, especially as the forwards are leading to them, how hard is it to kick the ball 10 meters in front of a leading forward???

3) Injuries, we have a lot of forward injuries currently, but I'm naming them last as we should be able to cover for them, obviously we have some way to go in this regard.

Anyway, just my thoughts

The pure hatred towards JSoS, and it’s obviously hatred after some of the comments from Thursday’s game, is nothing more than embarrassing and un-Carlton like. I’m questioning whether some posters are actually Carlton faithful or even have any idea about our game. Not sure which it is yet.....

2nd Qtr- A really good Qtr overall which was ruined by lack of polish on the finish, the missed set shots from Martin and Dow, the kick from Ed that just went over Levi’s head at 35 out, left foot snap from JSOS that I think was touched, the Murphy handball from a mark 45 out to Plow who never should have called and needs to leave that stuff to the Doc, Newman or SPS really a litany if missed opportunity, however barring that our forward press for the majority of the Qtr was outstanding and really we should have piled on 5-6 goals for the Qtr and really got back into the game, there goals that Qtr where a result of pretty poor defence and a real lack of pressure from our defenders inside the defensive 50 highlighted by Simmo’s effort on Bolton who snapped truly, not sure why there was such a lackadaisical attitude back there, disappointment at the ability of the forwards to convert there hard work in the forward press? Maybe but no excuse to let through 4 easy goals.

Just rewatching now. Second quarter just shows how much we are crying out for more quality and silk from our half forwards and wingers. Delivery inside 50 was poor despite gaining clearance and space from the stoppages. We overworked the ball too much at times at HF or just bombed it in and it killed us. Relying on players like Dow to play half forward and expect top class passing and vision is something we need to stop in the next 12-24 months. We need another 2 Jack Martin like players. We have the players who can win the ball at the stoppage but we have not many who can polish their work off. They kicked 4 in 4 minutes pretty much after 12 minutes of dominance from us. I want players like Fish, Dow, Setters and the like to make it and be part of the 22 but they need to find consistency and get to that next level in their game. Lastly - no to Walsh at HF please, Teaguey. Please.

I haven't noticed any hatred displayed towards young SOS at all on this board. Son of a club legend or not, people have to be able to question his value to the team. I've seen people going much, much harder at players like Setterfield and Dow and even then I wouldn't say I've seen any signs of 'hatred'.

Only took Fyfe out of the game and the did the job on Oliver the following week keeping him to 7 position until half time. Went forward in that game and kicked 3 goals. Then our midfield coach decides not to put him in there again. Barkers position needs to be questioned. Fisher has had more opportunity than any of our young midfielders and can’t get the job done. It’s so obvious that the coaches have favourites.
it’s been our problem for so long.

Jack did a great job on Fyfe and Oliver, but those matchup suit him size and pace

Horses for courses

To me during the Richmond game - Dow looks like a first year player with a lot of promise. Fisher looks like a second year player with a lot of promise. Setterfield looks lost. Cuningham is a class above the lot of them - just needs to get 30-40 more games under his belt and will be one of our best rotating forward midfielders - silk.

Yep...Cuningham is pure class....I remember the praccie match against Bombers last year that had my eyes bulging out of my head thinking "what the **** have we got here". Injuries have pretty much cruelled him though.

I guess the question we have is where do we play him to release that beast.....he's a creative forward that may be in and out of the game but could jag a few goals each game, or a mid who could potentially carve the opposition apart.

If Jacky Russell can get his head and body working together at its peak, for mine he could be a weapon in the midfield....probably one of those who you don't notice a lot until you see his post match stats, and just go 'WOW'.

Has anyone thought out that if the season Will continue (i'd put a big if on that) our missing forwards will come back available, thus to our advantage ? Its not cynical thinking but a simple fact....on the other hand .if the season Will be interrupted it Will be a time setback for our young talent growth..
I am currently living in lombardy italy and from what i've been seeing in europe ..be sure ...unfortunately no option can be ruled out
