How did you prepare for the game?
"We were disappointed with our efforts last week and we came over with a purpose. We sort of wanted to find our DNA again if you like. We went back to work early in the week about what that looked like. We come here with good optimism, but clearly you're playing a really good team so you've got to still execute that part of the game".

The conditions were as wet as they've been. What was your message to adapt to those conditions?
"The great thing is our style stacks up in the wet. We want to be a territory team which is what you do in the wet weather. We were sort of smiling to be honest when it started raining. We were sort of going 'here we go, we like to play in the wet' and we have an opportunity to display that. It's about taking territory and fighting to get to contest to contest to make that part of the game. Clearly today, we did that".

Did you have to change anything up at quarter time after giving away free kicks and was it discussed with the players?
"Yeah, it was. To be honest, I wasn't sure whether there was a directive around anything towards the boundary that was deliberate because it just seemed like that. I'm not sure I got that before the game, so I did ask the question. But, yeah we did, we talked about going a little bit away from the boundary and start to be a little bit more attacking, which actually suits our style anyway".

How would you describe the mindset of the players with their tackling pressure and intensity for four quarters?
"I'm really proud of the boys, really proud. Last week, we were disappointing. Tonight, we were proud. It's about repeating those behaviours. I just felt that we looked like a more organised, measured and disciplined team tonight and last week we looked the complete opposite. It's pleasing to get Jamie [Elliott] back into the team and Pendles; these guys are good drivers of those things. Coaching from the boundary line, you just see every little thing and how connected they were with their organisation. I'm really proud of that".

A special day for Ollie Henry. What did you make of his performance?
"It's a great lesson for resilience. Last week, he kicked 1.4 or whatever it is. I spoke to him during the week about staying more present and making the most of the opportunities you have. One of the hardest things in the game is getting the ball in your hands and he did that last week. Today, he looked like a player who had more composure. Credit to the kid, he went back and worked on his craft all week. I was looking out of my window and everyone else had gone home and he's doing goal kicking, and so he gets an opportunity to execute so it's a great lesson of resilience for him".

Cox suffered a finger injury. What's the prognosis?
"It's one of those cases of it coming down to the skin, I'm not sure what that's called. I didn't study medicine. Unfortunately, he had to be subbed out".

If your VFL was playing, is there a chance Henry would have been left home to get his confidence back in the reserves?
"I'm going to speak openly. His position in the team was up for grabs. We talked about that for half an hour at match committee. We've got a number of players we want to give opportunities to and he's a young player who's certainly one of those. We're a developing team. We have moments where our players will stand up and grab the moment and there are others where we have to learn from those lessons, and today was one we learnt the other way".

Going into a big game against Carlton, how significant is it to find your DNA today?
"I don't want to look too far forward. I really want to enjoy this. It's not often you get to come over here and play a top 4 team and particularly against an opposition where they are on the ladder. It was an important game for us to find ourselves again. We learnt some good lessons about that and we'll worry about Carlton when we get a chance to".

What does it mean to you as a coach to bounce back after last week's performance in terms of the message you're giving to the players?
"Yeah, I've got a great belief; not just me. The assistants I have; Brendon Bolton, Justin Leppitsch, Hayden Skipworth and Scott Selwood and our development and academy team. Amazing coaches. I'm so lucky to have a team around me to support me, advise here and there. I was really clear though coming into work on Monday that we were going to be real positive and find the good in what we had been doing. I thought last week wasn't a pattern of behaviour for us. I thought it was an event, a lack of effort in parts of the game. We went there and showed them what they were like for 7-8 rounds of being a really good pressure team, good territory team and these sort of things that we revisited".

It sounds like last week's performance hurt and you took it personally?
"We want better for our fans. We played Friday night and we disappointed. Sunday twilight, I'm not sure how many got to watch it. We want them to be proud of our effort every week. We're not going to win every game, that's reality but we want them to be proud of our effort".

Everyone loves Ginnivan's personality. What did you make of him celebrating before he kicked the goal?
"What do you do there [laughs*]. You want them to be themselves. Just kick the goal and then maybe celebrate with your team-mates might be the message. He's been very good for us Jack hasn't he".

Mason Cox discarded the goggles. Was that a wet weather issue and is that a concern going forward that he's risking his eyes if he doesn't wear them?
"I got word that he was not going to wear them. It was pouring down rain, he wouldn't be able to see much so that makes sense to me. I don't dig deep into what Mase is doing with his glasses other than he needs them to perform at the level".

Does he need to go into hospital to have his finger injury assessed?
"No, I haven't got an update of what that exactly looks like. We're flying out shortly, so clearly he won't have a chance to do that until we get back and assess it early next week".

How did you see Jeremy Howe's game? You didn't look overly impressed with his mark. Also, Darcy Moore has faced some criticism in recent weeks.
"I had a smile on my face, I like smiling. I thought they were outstanding. I thought our back 6 or 7 were outstanding today. Johnny Noble is not getting much credit for how well he's going. On Howe and Darcy [Moore], they're critical players for us. They're great leaders, they're a part of our leadership team. We've had some conversations in the last couple of weeks. It's been documented that they can play better. I thought today they led from the front and they were outstanding".

John Noble's tackle, smother and then the spoil 30 seconds later was outstanding.
"Yeah exactly. Those moments we cherish. We want to celebrate all those. We want to lead from the front on those parts of the game. It's something you've got to keep re-establishing. You don't just do it once and say 'oh, that's nice, I'll do one again next week'. We like to have our teammates inspire us and that's one great example of that".

I like his measured approach about the first quarter umpiring. I also like the apparent messaging towards Henry, you’re doing everything right, but need to take your chances in front of goal. If you don’t someone will take your spot. Great that we backed it up and named him sub. Even better that he took it on board, done extra work and when he got his chance executed. Henry certainly looked like he wanted the final kick, which was a pleasing contrast to last week.

Quite apart from Fly's responses the questions were good meaty questions full of relevance.

From Fly's responses I have the suspicion that seeing Ollie staying back after training during the week and practicing his goal kicking may have got him over the line.

Good messaging from Fly and great response from young Ollie.

How good is it to see such a close connection between players and the coaching staff?

Sometimes I feel McRae says a little too much, but I also like his openness and small insights such as these.

Maynard's best game of the season by a mile. Moore, Noble, Howe all fantastic as well. Best defensive effort of the year, gave them absolutely nothing.

I know De Goey didn't have the biggest game but boy when he gets the ball in the middle of the ground we generally are going to score. He's the most clinical bloke on our team when it comes to link up play and fast break points.

Love what he brings hate that he loses focus far too often.

Na , the “outrage” was justified. The kid is a natural forward , plays every game , be it kicking 1 goal 4 or 4 goals one. Once he knows and understands his game along with self belief. Lookout
The cloud shouter is perfectly capable of expressing outrage when he feels it necessary so lecturing others about the need to retain emotional control is a bit rich. Just because he didn't see the need to retain Henry in the team and thinks maybe the selectors had a cunning plan in omitting him does not mean that those of us who complained were wrong.

The team's performance this week will silence the doomsday merchants that have bemoaned the list's lack of quality and have predicted years in the wilderness for Collingwood; at least until the next loss. :)

I'm a bit of a doom merchant, albeit a quiet one, in regards to the state of our list. It underwhelms me.

But I'm also capable of incredible feats of delusion, and don't mind getting caught up in the moment. Wins like yesterday prompt me to consider that I might be wrong.

The enthusiasm wears off quick, but it allows me to enjoy the glorious moments.

Every loss darkens my mood but I try to remember that things in footy are never as bad (or as good) as they seem.

We've played some amazing footy this year, surprisingly good. I wasn't expecting us to put the efforts that we have on display. Next step will be improving this side's consistency but I take every win like this as a gift.

Have a happy week mate. X

He was spot on about the first quarter umpiring. Most of the free kicks were there and were due to Collingwood being overly aggressive for the wet conditions and giving away free kicks. So they needed to modify a bit so they didn’t hand free kicks over unnecessarily.

Had a good feeling about the team this week as named. As soon as I saw the conditions I thought it would suit us. Freo are a quick team with lots of marking talls, so a slippery, contested game was to our benefit. Freo's efforts up at the GOld Coast showed them up there as well.

Our defence was superb today. I think IQ has been underrated. Not sure how many small defenders in the league have been better this season. I was also surprised to hear Bucks suggest Noble hasn't had the best month. I think he's been great with his leg speed and effort.

Also pleased to see Jordy get more clear touch on the ball this week. He gets held off it a bit most weeks and he is our most damaging midfielder. Crisp and Adams worked hard. Steele worked well into space and played his best game for a while. Daicos on the other wing was also damaging. Credit to Darcy Cameron for his efforts and marking around the ground.

Well done to Oli Henry. His 7 goals in the VFL showed he is too good for that level. His kicking remains variable, but he needs to be given games. He's clearly a genuine mid-sized forward prospect with some talent. Balanced with Ginni, Billy, Checkers who are goal kickers and McCreery who brings vital pressure it can be pretty dangerous when we spread and move the ball in quickly.

By contrast, Freo are well coached but I think lack polish and size in the midfield. They should have made better use of their Ruck dominance today, but were beaten. Brayshaw, Serong, Acres, Brodie, Mundy isn't that scary a proposition. Need Fyfe to give them some size and dynamism.

We just seem to look a better side when we go with mid sized forwards - Henry, Elliott, WHE, DeGoey - a great mix.

Hopefully Henry has a body that is a tad more durable than the others.

I'd argue when we look a better side is when the midfield actually gets on top or at least breaks even

We seem to be extremely hard to beat when the Midfield gets on top. It just needs to happen way more often.

I'm hoping the flat patch was flu related and we can retain the intensity of early season and yesterday.

He's a fcuking legend!
agree he is a great kid who's backing up all his talk and Hollywood behaviours with actions on the field. V smart player who tackles hard, positions his body well, kicks truly, and his little efforts often lead to goal scoring opportunities. Worry is that he is now getting sniped every single week by opposition players, so our boys - and umpires - need to protect him a bit better. Will end up with a serious injury soon if players are continually allowed to ride him into the ground and tackle him late after the whistle is blown.

Great win by the boys, big upset. Wins like that are a big tick for the new coaches, development, culture and mindset of the players. Though we will no doubt have some ore down moments to come this year.

& Just when you start lamenting some of Hine's choices in previous years, smokeys like McCreery, Noble & Cameron bob up and have great games. Throw in Crisp, Maynard, Mihocek and Ginni, and the guy knows what he's doing with later picks & assessing opposition talent.

I must admit i wrote Noble off after he refused to go back with the flight twice against WCE last year. Was very damming.
But this year he has been amazing in his desperation. Today was no different to how he has played all year.
Easily best 22 and probably best 10 when picking the team! Very underrated.

I have fears for Gini that he is all flair and wont do the hard stuff.
Today didn't tell me anything different.

But damn he knows how to make a possession count. Multiple times he was super clean (cant teach that) and made very very good calls. Hit the post twice. if he kicks hose goals the media is talking about him.

My only issue is the way he celebrated after his last goal.....i would have loved to have seen him acknowledge the backline (Noble take a bow!!)....especially after the coach pulled him up and said "your goal is our goal"....

That's completely inaccurate. When it's Ginnies time to go, he goes. Never shirks and actually has the oppo doubting themselves with his ability to draw a free kick. Don't be distracted by the blonde hair, Ginnivan is a tough kid with the class to finish off his work.
