Late, yes. Match reports are also a little short and a little lacking. A bit like Paul Medhurst

Richmond v Bulldogs
It is with great sadness that this week marks the passing of Tangers Teffers Tezza from holding the reigns of the Richmond football club. In five years, Teffers has been responsible for, umm, well, errr, not a great deal actually. If only generation Y Tigers supporters had the passion of their forebears and we would have had chook poo aplenty at Punt Road.

Alas it was not to be and as a result, it was with more of a sigh than a bang that Teffers went out on Friday night. Went out a loser. Mind you, he had 22 mates on that score as well. The fact that he "developed" those losers doesn't add much to his CV. At least he managed to be instrumental in bringing Ben Cousins back to the footy fold in a sound body and mind. Or perhaps not. On either count.

Apologies for not providing a match report for last week, but let's face it, how on earth can one write anything about a hideously improbable event? It's a bit like trying to write that Kevin Rudd has come up with sound economic policy or that Anna Bligh has grown a brain cell. I rest my case.

now that the apologies are over, I can get to this week's game. For a while there it looked like Richmond were in with a chance with this game. Then they set foot on the field. Once again it was up to the standard crowd of idiots to do idiotic things. Bowden managed to rack up another impressive set of Bowdens and in the process managed to accumulate a gazzillion super coach points. Great if he's in your super coach team and rubbish if you happen to be a Tigers supporter. Good to see Pettifer running hot in the Tivendale competition this week and on current form, should soon become the next Tiger's whipping boy. A good even spread of goal kickers from the Dogs and a supreme second half saw the Dogs scrape home by a measley 68 points. Not bad considering that it was an even game up to 1/2 time.

Ben Cousins Injury Update: After demonstrating that his hand had fully recovered last week on national tv, Ben continued his rehabilitation by having a run-in with a puff pastry and a llama with an aqualung this week. At least that's what he thought it was after a cracking good time on an icy Friday night.

North Melbourne v St Kilda
This was a chance for the Saints to win their 11th straight, a new club record. This was also a chance for the Kangaroos to win 1 straight, almost a season high. There's been plenty of media hype surrounding St Kilda of late, but frankly it seems reasonably obvious that these so-called journalists haven't been watching them play. They haven't been that impressive. Yes indeed, club records for successive wins is something to be proud of as a club and for all St Kilda supporters, but even on Saturday the Kangas had them in trouble early, and if it wasn't for injury the result may have been different.

North were applying an abundance of pressure around the ground and this culminated in mistakes and turnovers from their opponents, which led to goals. 5 goals in fact the Roos booted in the first quarter, to a solitary major from Nicky Dal, who is back in the good books with Saints supporters this season.

Wells was prominent early, Montagna also, but it was late-ish in the second quarter when the game really turned. Firstly, there was Steven King's bump well off the ball on Sam Power which was hard to see clearly what happened, clash of heads or something apparently, but at any rate Sam Power got knocked out and the Roos were effectively down a man. Really though, it was Sam Power. King probably did them a favour. Not long after that, young Warren (Ben?) was hit fairly by Raph Clarke, and his day was over also. That meant 2 players down for North Melbourne and slowly but surely, the contest was over.

Kosi and Roo started to dominate in the second half, Wells disappeared from the game, Hale was as effective a forward as he's been all season long, and a new club record had been set. Hayes and Montagna were again terrific for the visitors, Kosi nabbed 6 goals and took some terrific marks, whilst McMahon and Firrito (aka Braith Anasta, aka The Missing Link) battled like an enraged, evolving primate. He flailed around at the umpire a few times too, trying to display is alpha superiority or something, but that didn't work and so went back to pick through Daniel Pratts hair.

A couple more injuries to North Melbourne made sure the job was done, at one stage having 17 fit players. I still don't see that as any reason to increase the size of the bench however, and it's only when it effects "your team" that any coach brings it up. Tough times ahead for Laidley perhaps but the Kangas do have some good young talent on their list, so would be a shame to see his spot put under immense pressure.

Anyway, who cares, Saints won. Winners are grinners, though some of them also get suspended for 4 weeks.

Lions v Blues
Carlton traveled to ye olde Brisbane town, ready to take on the might of Lions which is substantially less than the might of the Lions of a few years ago, especially without a backline. Even with a decimated defence, this became a close game with the Blues getting out to an early lead and the Blions able to pin it back somewhat. Errant kicking seemed to be Carlton’s Achilles heel, though Fevola seemed to have his radar on and bagged 8 for the evening. He really is an enigma isn’t he, but frankly unless he’s urinating against something, rather dull to write about.

Chris Judd got a lot of possessions so he must have done something right. Some say the best game he’s had all season. Personally, glad he’s gotten that out of the way.

The Blions seem halfway to becoming a good side, and this is a match they let slip. You can’t let your opposition have a 30 point lead by ¾ time and expect to get a lot of it back, but to their credit, fought it out to the end and the Blues may have put the cue away a touch early.

The biggest disappointment about this match is that Carlton is now in the top 4, an amazing feat really considering they have Kade Simpson and Setana O’hAiplin (the man with the impossible spelling) in their side.

Hawthorn v Sydney
The Swans don’t travel south for the Winter, north for anything, or West with any great confidence at all. It has to be said though that this was a highly entertaining match, and not just to see the kerfuffle when The Thing decides it’s clobbering time (though a whimpy little clobber it was really) and gives away 3 50s in a row to turn the match.

Dawks players were going down like Roos (that’s Kanga, not Paul) with Rioli doing a hammy and several other blokes spending considerable time on the side due to injury, and with an already depleted back 6, Hawthorn did pretty well to hold the Swans out.

There’s something about Adam Goodes this year. Maybe this is his 3 year cycle, but he was best on ground for mine, and would be getting a few votes from the umps too I’d reckon. Rhyce Shaw started the season off well but his disposal is getting poor. Saw him bake someone last week for missing a target by a few feet, but sheesh since then The Owl has missed targets by metres.

This was a low possession match and yet the teams were spent in the last quarter. After the match a slightly despondent Cyril Rioli went to shake hands with O’Keefe, who mistook him for one of the Auskick kids and signed his jumper for him instead, and ruffled his hair. An easy mistake to make as he does look as though he could be paid in green frogs, and be pleased with that.

Melbourne v Collingwood
For a game that was supposed to be all about Watts, it turned into a match about Dick. The first quarter was not pretty for Dees fans, already down by 40 or so points by the first break. Something of a come back in the second quarter, but ultimately this was a day for the Pies.

A fine performance by Brad Dick to take the Rising Star award, and also able to provide many a mature humorous moment within the commentary. At one stage Tim Lane pointed out that James McDonald had his hands “full with Dick” *s*******. I’m just hoping that he can continue the good form so that Bruce McAvaney can one day describe Dick as delicious *giggle*.

Pendlebury continued his fine season with 39 disposals, maybe a little down on efficiency but high on dodgy moustache so he’s definitely a fine player to watch. Will most likely nudge out McMahon as dodgiest moustache in the AFL, purely because I doubt McMahon will survive the inevitable Tiger cull.

For Melbourne, Sylvia seems to have grown in stature if not in height, and has been superb for the last couple of weeks. The Demons lack any strong forward power, but I guess that’s why they’re blooding someone like Watts now. Probably some upside to all that I’m sure.

Collingwood are starting to look better, which is disappointing for most of us. Fortunately, they’re just as likely to lose to Fremantle next time they play them. In this match however they ran away with it and put Melbourne away.

Early in the last quarter, a free kick was given away by Dick for holding Warnock. If only it was the other way around *chortle*.
