VFL Game Day Round 12: Loss to Geelong

1. Durham (18 disp): didn’t stop trying and applying good pressure. A bit like a thinking man’s Nick Kommer.

Had a fantastic mark that would've impressed our coaches a lot. Went back with the flight in our D50 and put his body on the line to intercept. Love to see that effort when we're getting belted that hard.

I did hear his name a lot. Okunbor (cool name) looks ok too, do you know anything else about him?
Irish lad, good size, played mostly defence to start off with

The fact that we’re getting brained by the stronger VFL programs but have remained pretty competitive in the AFL is probably the best indicator of where we are actually at. Soft underbelly, nothing really meaningful pushing up from underneath.

Doesn’t help that out VFL list is very underwhelming too.

Yes, and I think to take the next step there really needs to be a good crop of kids banging down the door at selection. Just another sign we're a few years off doing anything of note in the AFL.

Admittedly it's no something I pay heaps of attention to but I can't think of any successful AFL sides that didn't have a strong 2s below them.

Even if the teams weren’t particularly strong there would have been a decent group of 6-7 that could be relied upon if called up, which we don’t have.

Completely fine to have project players that are not viable for selection but the only ones on our list that I can confidently say could do a job if called upon are Gleeson, Phillips and even though we are mucking around with him Ambrose in defence. None of them are particularly versatile and can play in the midfield. Not a good place to be.

I really want Constable
I know he is a bigger size but is he just a bigger version of what we already have ?
Then again he is a better option than Ham.

Does show the lack of depth in places . Maybe a different story if Sheil and McGrath are not injured and Clarke does not spend 4 months on the side line as well as Caldwell going down early.

Would agree that it’s hard to forecast 4 specialist on ballers having long term injuries at the same time, but you’ve done something wrong if that means it completely cleans out the cupboard.
