Round 16 AFL Rising Star Nomination

Who would people pick this week? I'm going to go with Luke Parker (Sydney), although Ashley Smith (West Coast) would be a worthy selection based on his performance this week and his consistency over recent weeks as well. Other notable yet-to-be-nominated performers this week include:
  • Hayden Jolly (Gold Coast)
  • Rory Thompson (Gold Coast)
  • Allen Christensen (Geelong)
  • Joel Wilkinson (Gold Coast)
  • Jake Batchelor (Richmond)
  • Dion Prestia (Gold Coast)
  • Bradley Helbig (Richmond)
  • Ben Jacobs (Port Adelaide)
  • Liam Jones (Western Bulldogs)
  • Michael Hibberd (Essendon)
  • Ryan Harwood (Brisbane)
  • Luke Dahlhaus (Western Bulldogs)
  • Patrick Karnezis (Brisbane)
  • Harley Bennell (Gold Coast)
Previous nominees in 2011:
  • Round 1 - Dyson Heppell (Essendon)
  • Round 2 - Luke Shuey (West Coast)
  • Round 3 - Mitchell Duncan (Geelong)
  • Round 4 - Jasper Pittard (Port Adelaide)
  • Round 5 - Brandon Matera (Gold Coast)
  • Round 6 - Jack Darling (West Coast)
  • Round 7 - Zachary Smith (Gold Coast)
  • Round 8 - Shane Savage (Hawthorn)
  • Round 9 - Reece Conca (Richmond)
  • Round 10 - Jack Steven (St Kilda)
  • Round 11 - Jordan Gysberts (Melbourne)
  • Round 12 - Sam Reid (Sydney)
  • Round 13 - Daniel Menzel (Geelong)
  • Round 14 - David Swallow (Gold Coast)
  • Round 15 - Luke Breust (Hawthorn)

Ash Smith definitely. Was close to BOG vs Carlton and had another great game vs Geelong in a blockbuster game. Is looking like a terrific prospect.

Didn't see any of the GC v Swans match so I'll go bias to Ash Smithy.

What a turnaround considering some of us on the Eagles board wanted him dropped 5 weeks ago.

Didn't see Parker's game admittedly.

After every WCE game I've said about Smith "that's his best game for the club" - without fail. He's improving heaps and is critical to our setup. Was brilliant vs Geelong and his tackle on Motlop was close to match-saving.

I admit I didn't see other nominees but Smith does deserve one soon.

Karnezis kicked 2 goals I think, making it 7 from 4 games. Kicked an important after the siren goal at 3/4 time to keep us within 15 or so points to give us a shot in the final term (which we obviously didn't take).

Sounds like there are some others who may be more deserving this week but he's a chance I guess and will no doubt get the nod before the season is out.

If Smith wins it really has been a quite week. Smith wasn't that great.

There is more to footy than stats...Smith was excellent defensively (see: tackle on Motlop), and once again managed to get forward to kick an important goal.

Was named in our best from most news sources, playing against a champion team in a high intensity match.

What does Christensen have to do to get a nomination? Played a few good games in a row now.

Was really good against the eagles. Put in quite a hard game, i'm impressed.

Would prefer Smith though, purely from the perspective of how far back hes come from. He was probably one of the last on the list in terms of expectations for the year. But Christensen was just as good this week.

Parker's game, on its own merits, stacks up well enough. But it is his first performance at that level, which will (and probably should) count against him getting a nomination this week.

If another Swan were to get a nomination, Alex Johnson probably deserves one more on the basis of a string of decent performances. But this weekend probably wasn't sufficient to get him the nod, and there are other players (like Smith or Christensen) who are equally deserving of a nomination for a string of consistent performances.

I just hope Parker gets a few more opportunities this season to show that he can repeat that kind of effort, especially against more seasoned opposition.

Christensen's been the most consistent, hopefully he's not this year's McKenzie.

Surprised that there's no Luke Rounds, especially considering a Pie supporter made this thread. Took Harvey out of the game completely.

They don't really release the criteria for the weekly selection do they?

Surely a standout game is sufficient
