Autopsy Round 18, 2025: Hawks fall short

I wonder how Sicilys nose is today because I watched the ball go through his fingers into it 6-8 times sat night
It's really weird how his timing and judgement seem to have completely fallen away this year. I assume it's a confidence issue, maybe he's in his head a bit. We don't have time to sit back and wait for him to work it out though.

Was just thinking that. Struggle to think of a game I've ever seen that happen with that sort of volume.
I've posted about this before about our inability to prevent switches/turnovers from our forward 50 that end up translating to goals for the opposition. Freo did it, the Pies did it to us and Cats do it to us all the time!!! You would think there would be some sort of planning to either stop this or even halving the situation, Rant over!!

Time for a new midfield coach. Hale…time for a sea change. Stoppage work is deplorable and exiting stoppages. Most teams are slicing out of us. Need fresh ideas…new players rotating. Our problems in the midfield can’t be all on the players. We are bringing misfiekders in and dropping them at half time. Embarrassing.
The same midfield coach that had us +6 for clearances at 3 QTR time.

He's doing a pretty stella job with what is at his disposal.

It wasn’t the reason we lost but Chol’s miss early in the last was a real momentum killer.
Kicks that and we are three goals up. Ball goes down the other end and Voss kicks a (slightly) more difficult one to make it a 7 point game. Really took the wind out of our sails.
Yeah, not Chol's fault, took the wind out of our sails they go down the other end kick a quick goal and they then smell blood and we seemed to buckle under the pressure they applied.

Our only burst midfielder from centre bounces/stoppages is Day.

Josh Ward says hello.

Hey, he actually took a couple.

I feel he's getting it back.

I had the same feeling about his game. He was absolutely playing far below his best, but there were real signs he's on the way back.

Whatever is best for his injury is best for us ultimately. I hope it's come good or coming good. We're not going to win a final playing injured players. Those days are gone.

His field kicking is still worrying. How do you lose that? I have no idea

I thought it looked a little better, but obviously still a ways off.

A really bad groin will definitely affect your kicking and ability to drive through a contest, hold your ground, do what your brain wants you to do etc.

I really hope it's not something he'll have to carry all year. If it is, playing him will not work.

But there were positive signs on the weekend, and it might be he just needs a few games back and his fitness/injury to keep improving.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion as we all see things differently and have our own biases

But the suggestion that Hale is at fault in some way is bewildering

It is not his fault if players have no left side of their body and keep getting caught

Like you said, the Hawks controlled the majority of the game including the midfield contest up until 3/4 time

Meek tiring in the last was as big a factor as any. That and a few HBFs costing us dearly with questionable efforts

That's a big call on Moore but I get where you are coming from.

What is weird is that last year he had his pre season totally destroyed by glandular fever and came out and was All Australian!

I'm thinking he is carrying some sort of injury, I can't think of any other reason for the big drop off.

Agree with Ginni, he's having another very solid year. One of our most consistent players.
If you run the player comparison tool for Moorey, Ginni and CMac, CMac is the least well performed this year. Moorey's numbers are actually pretty good (he's averaging just 2 less possessions a game compared to his AA year when he was regularly outstanding) but his goal kicking is down both in terms of shots and particularly in terms of accuracy (36:18 in 25 games last year compared to 13:15 in 16 games this year). If he'd kicked as straight as he did last year and returned 18:10 we might have pinched an extra game somewhere along the line and his year would look quite good. Why his kicking for goal isn't as good might be form, might be he's under extra defensive pressure this year, might be the absence of Dear bringing the ball to ground or poorer forward entries. .. who knows.

I agree with this
at a guess and without looking at the comparisons with 2024, almost all of the small forwards would be down on goal tallies, and that is without any Bruest input.

Our transition this year has been a lot slower and less direct than last year and the smalls have had less opportunities to get on the end of easier goal scoring chains.

So Freo had to lay 103 tackles to just get over the line... Yea, nah, I still don't rate them, we'll see how the one hundred tackles a game goes for them in the next few months.
Reminds me of Sam's quote earlier last year. Sometimes the way we play we make it easy for the opposition to apply pressure.

Collingwood and Brisbane for contrast make it very hard to apply pressure as when they win the ball they go. They take the first option and everyone knows where to spread and they hit their targets and it's very difficult to stop.

We have guys win the ball then ignoring options and getting tackled. We kick inboard to a flat footed Morrison in a 2v1.

We switch the play with a high slow kick to the hbf that gets cut off.

When they turn turn it over to us in the middle of the ground we stand there, kick sideways, then handball then kick to 40m out in the corridor to Dear in a 4v1 with no crumbers. Kick it long a pack in the pocket and worst case scenario they mark it and have to kick over the mark. Best case we mark and goal. Likely scenario is ball comes to ground and we either win a crumb or they are under immense pressure and cannot rebound.

We made some really silly mistakes this match. Players and coaches.

Moore is playing as a MID far more this season than last and still averaging less disposals.

This is pretty bad. Should be getting much more as a MID than a FWD.

Impacted pretty well on the weekend. Let down by others
37.5% DE is not an impact player.

Finn is an endurance machine. I've made my point previously, he either plays as a stopper who tires out his opponent or he doesn't play at all.
