Last minute or so;

Judge for yourself, technically, to the letter of the law it's a free kick.

In slow motion you see Milne attack Harry front on, without looking at the ball, and then hits Harry on the top part (around the bicep) of the arm, that is front on contact, correct decision.

Shocking Kick there by Harry in the last 10 Second

I thought we got some good overlap going in the second qtr. We should have been 40 up at HT and that inevitably costs you when they have the momentum.

Let's not undersell St Kilda here, they are a good side. They beat Sydney once and nearly did it in Sydney, lost to Adelaide in Adelaide by under a kick and thrashed Essendon (who had their measure for years).

Sydney is a bog test but I think we are up to it.

Not happy with a win like that.

Bucks needs to let Elliot know about playing on with 45 seconds left, like if we had lost.

On a positive note, I thought this game was a really good stepping stone for Dawes, Jolly and Fas, and to a lesser extent Harry O.

On a negative note, Cloke looks to be extremely goal hungry and carrying Young, Seedsman, Elliot and Sinclair is too much.

Harry O was excellent. Brilliant under pressure, flew the flag high for us against the tip rat.

Dawes was a definite contributor tonight. Jolly was probably best on ground. Worked his but off.

Elliot played on to nail the goal with confidence, if he kicked it no one would've cared.

Good win, our back line handled it well under pressure.

Our backline was excellent tonight. Won many one on ones.

It's moving the ball forward that's the problem at the moment. There is absolutely no structure at all heading inside 50.

The club has been talking about timing their run and playing the best footy at the end of the year. I dunno if thats code for "We'll screw around til round 20 and then try" but we are running out of time. Need to be hitting peak form in the next few weeks otherwise I can't see us challenging the top sides this year.

Our Backline has been Poor all season
There are reasons for that beyond just being poor. I thought they fought well tonight although being separated as teams like to do now. It hasn't had the chance to settle. My expectations were never going to be high in the first place, so I will take 12 goals every week. As long as we kick more :D

I agree, our backline was outstanding tonight.
In the 2nd, we played very well and that was one of our best qters for the year but then the forward presure dropped off in the second half and the midfield were always second to the ball. As of next week we really need to start getting to our best so we can carry some good form to the finals, unlike last year.

We seem to play a zone defence rather than playing directly one on one, and often seemed to have 2 m2n capable of covering one as St Kilda moved the ball up the ground. However, rarely did the defenders seem to close in on the ooponent when the ball was delivered in their direction, and the zone defence seemed pointless.
So little pressure exerted in any area of the game, Sinclair and Elliott are not up to playing with big bodies and so many of their tackles were ineffective. As forwards they were next to useless. Seedsman is stylish with the ball but doesn't have any other tricks at this stage. Young is not going to help us because we desperately need players who can kick and he is not one of them. Our success this year may depend on the progress Didak, Macaffer and Krakouer between now and finals, because we will not win a premiership with so many unskilled or lightly built players in the team.

I really really liked Heater's game tonight. He didn't have a lot of the ball and when he did he did do a bit of butchering, but his defensive efforts, his one-on-one efforts that were simply amazing, his ability to get the fist in numerous times when the St Kilda player had prime position and without giving away a free. Simply superb.

The free to Harry is there every day of the week, no matter how slight the contact was. Whilst Milne had his eyes on the ball at certain stages, the front on contact occurred with his eyes firmly on Harry - good decision. Having said that, as a supporter reverse the rolls. Just think how PISSED we would be if we were on the wrong end of that decision. Have a bit of sympathy for St Kilda supporters.

It was quite disappointing tonight that the umpires decided to change the interpretation of HTB. Unfortunately when one umpire makes an incorrect interpretation, the other umpires feel they need to be consistent, hence the continual paying of HTB's that as supporters we don't want to see.

I suggest a couple of them remember to read the rule book again...

15.2.6 football held to the Body of a Player
The field Umpire shall bounce the football when a Player, in the act of applying a Correct Tackle, holds the football to the body of the Player being Tackled or the football is otherwise pinned to the ground, unless the Player being Tackled has had a prior opportunity to Correctly Dispose of the football,
in which case Law 15.2.3 (a) shall apply.

3aw said that mcevoy got the chocolates over jolly tonight, nearly choked to death when i heard it..

too much fiddling around, am worried about next week but fact of the matter is footy is footy so can't rule us out and we are in with a shot. cloke i feel can't play in this current type of football, too many numbers, not enough 1v1 opportunities, plus the lack of quality ball coming in, feel sorry for him in a way, still shows he is working hard when he is running 15kms a game.

young isn't ready
sinclair has earned his spot for now i hope
elliott i love the kid but gotta ice the clock in that situation and avoid giving all us fans a nervous breakdown

dale thomas and heath shaw, irreplaceable at the moment, enough said

This
hes kicking was fantastic, and i believe he's coming into his top form again

Agree he is starting to look like the AA CHB Version from Last Season

Umpiring was inconsistent all night. That's why when BT is like "the umpiring's been consistent all night" I'm like WHHHAAAA?

Yeah we had the rough end of the stick in the third quarter, and then because of a last second decision that goes against them they act like we had the umpires the whole night. Statistics show we had more, but then there were the ones like Cloke getting a free for holding when he took the mark anyway, and tiggy touchwood ones where we have already run off with possession anyway.

Regardless, we have the four points and are now eight points clear of West Coast.

We just rest on our laurels and we're not good enough to do it.

Stupidity nearly cost us the game.Pendlebury playing on from the kick out and turning it over to Riewoldt, Blair turning it over to Saad, Elliot playing on and O'Brien kicking it out on the full after getting the soft free that saved us from most likely a draw.

Absolutely pathetic and it's typical of our season. Miles off the Hawks. People are just hoping for a mythical switch to be flicked.

Exactly. You can have a coach with the best game plan and tactics in the world, but when you have players with football IQ's of a garden potato trying to execute instructions or trying to think for themselves, you wont get far.

We haven't played anyway near a full 4 quarter game all year, if it hasn't happened yet, it wont happen finals time. Not smart enough or skillful enough. Especially if we need to rely on players of the calibre of Young to get us through.

Tom Young playing in the centre square in the last term with the game on the line is poor coaching, sorry Bucks. Wtf were you thinking? He was slow, reactive and absolutely timid. He did not want to be out there. You could see his lazy disinterested efforts.

Agree wholeheartedly. He stood there looking at his team mate with the ball on the ground. It spilled out and he did nothing. Harry does this too but not as bad. Stands their looking at the boys fighting with the ball and hope that it pops out.

Our backline is not our problem, bar a couple of disposal errors- it's the other end of the ground that is bringing us undone.

Oh yes it is...One on One we have problems. Tonight there were chaotic scenes trying to get the ball away. Not slick like Geelong were against the Hawks.

Am I alone in thinking we won our fair share of one-on-ones in the backline this evening? Especially compared to recent performances (GWS excluded)?

Sadly, after this game I'm more convinced than ever that without at least 2 of Krak, Caff, Dids and Johnno back in this side and fit and in form as well as some improvement from Dawes and Cloke we are no chance to even see a grand final this year. A win is a win for sure but the lack of cohesion right now will not stand up against Hawthorn and probably not Sydney or Adelaide either. There were glimpses in the 2nd quarter but unless we can either smash the scoreboard early or play like that for 4 quarters we will be clinically dissected by the top teams in September. Some of the decision-making tonight, mostly by the kids was woeful and who the hell does Cloke think he is having a snap for goal with 3 blokes hanging off him when 2 team mates are running alongside him totally unmarked. A 2 metre handpass would have made an absolute certainty of what he butchered and it wasn't the only time he made that mistake. Unfortunately, the way things have been going, we almost need a miracle to be a real chance in September. Hopefully the gods will smile on Krak and Dids so that Bucks isn't forced to send Swanny down there again!

During finals it is your bottom 6 that exposes you. Our bottom 6 is abysmal and will cost us. The experience that may come back into the team may not be that helpful either with little game time which is what happened during last years finals.

Fair enough, but who are our bottom six come finals?

Tonight, let's say they were Seedsman, Young, Elliot, Sinclair... then who? Nath Brown? Chris Dawes? Then let's go to finals time. All things go as planned, you'd think we have Didak and Johnson back by then. Let's drop Young and Seedsman for those two. So now we have Elliot and Sinkers in our best twenty two, with the rest looking pretty strong. With the sub rule, that's one weak link on the field at any time. I'm happy enough to back either of those two in a pressure situation. And what if Krak or MaCaffer get back?

At the end of the day, our bottom six will probably look like this: Sinclair, Elliot, Dawes (?), Brown (?), Toovey (?), Wellingham (?). Or, if things go well, MaCaffer, Krakouer, Dawes, Brown, Toovey, Wellingham. I'd be comfortable enough comparing that to any of the top sides. Of the top of my head, the Cats: Smedts, Sheringham, Duncan, Walker, Motlop, Stokes/Christensen (?), with Corey and maybe Varcoe to return. Or the Hawks: Smith, Gunston, Bruest, Puopolo, Savage, Schoey (?) with only Franklin to return. There are equally unproven players in each of the Swans, Eagles and Crows lineups.

So our bottom six isn't really too bad, comparatively. Overall, I'd give the bottom six prize to the Hawks at this stage, but a lot can change in a few weeks. It wasn't that long ago that Bruest was axed for repeated insipid performances and players like Savage, Gunston, Smith and Puopolo were being torn to shreds by Richmond, with an out of form Jacky Riewoldt schooling Schoey and Gibson in the art of ass-whoopery.

Long story short: have faith, my friend. Our best is still comparable with the rest. Would be nice to see a functioning forward line though.

First time poster here on the pies board, been stalking for years. We were lucky to get away with a win tonight. The terrible goal kicking was painful but it was good to see Dawes looking half decent finally. Also I thought Reid had a few moments too. In the end we did what we had to, with some good luck, and we can look forward to a good match next week.

Lots of mistakes from the young kids in the last and some of the experienced players with less impact than usual. Was great to destroy the saints year though!

In the end all we can do is keep winning. At this point I'm just taking the season game by game. We are not playing near our best, I'm not even sure what our best is anymore. Good to get the win, onto the swans with some more gametime into rested/injured players and perhaps some more experience in the side.

A great first time post there CM. Welcome!

I've said all along that Young is a dud.

Gone down hill really quickly since his first year in the VFL. List clogger IMO.
