Autopsy Round 23 = Adelaide 59-56 Collingwood

Reckon we watched two different games.

Beau made a big difference in his pressure and perceived pressure alone. A huge driver of the inside 50 advantage as he and Schultz both played as men possessed.

Which brings me to the next apology I owe. Schultz has been incredible this last month when everyone else has looked like absolute crap. Credit where it’s due, he has well and truly turned it around.
Still doesn't kick goals which is what is expected of a small forward.

Need to try my best to compose my thoughts

The Good:

  • That looked more like us, which is what I hoped to see regardless of the result. Good timing coming into finals
  • We deserved to win that. Could have easily gone our way
  • My man Billy Frampton silences the haters once again. He should ALWAYS be in this f**king side
  • Dominated territory and inside 50s. Midfield and Defence held up their end of the bargain despite so many being down

The Bad:

  • The forward line. Not sure what's going on with McStay, Checkers and Jamie but they're all off. Badly. We need it to turn around
  • Selection committee. You've once again cost us 4 points. Bobby plays? We win that game. That game was tailor made for Bobby
  • Coaching. Really bad coaching performance tonight. To just keep pumping that ball inside 50 with no adjustment whatsover for THREE QUARTERS is deplorable coaching. Why not sub off one of the talls and throw one of Nick, Josh or Steele up forward to create some more dangerous smarts around the goals? Why not get the players lowering the eyes?
  • Umpiring. Some how it continues to get worse and worse and worse. Adelaide were playing rubgy while we were forced to play AFL. How Brodie Smith was allowed to just sit on that ball in the final minute was pretty bad

My takeaway:

Reckon this loss will be the turning point. Luck has fallen our way and we're still Top 4 despite losing 5 of our last 6. Thump Melbourne next week and we're Top 4. This time, I know we'll beat Adelaide in that first final. Losing that game will now have everyone's radar off us. Adelaide knows they got away with one there and that won't happen a second time. Better they think they beat their hoodoo now than in a final. You don't break a bogey with just one lucky close win. Just ask us about Hawthorn.

The other thing most outside Collingwood supporters won't notice. Next week will be the first time under Fly we've been at full strength with surplus. We literally now have all of our first 25-26 players to choose from at selection coming into finals.

Even as a pessimist I'm ok with where we sit as of this moment with what's to come. Play like that next week and we smash Melbourne

Are you serious? We lost our first game to them that year by a few points due to a dubious umpiring decision to disallow pendles winner with a few seconds left, and the other game, we lost by 80+ in a dead rubber in the last round.

That year was tarnished due to coaching handover and players being happy with themselves after 2010.

2011 was by far the most dominant Collingwood team I have ever seen and it’s not even close.
Are you serious? We lost to Geelong 3 times. How we lost doesn't matter, we lost 3 times mate. If we were better than them we wouldn't have lost 3 times. Just in case my point didn't register, we lost to them 3 times. That is 3 times, I repeat, 3 times!

The opportunity is really that Port lift for Ken and snag an unlikely win. Against Essendon they’ll know exactly what they need to win by against a side that has nothing to play for and one of the worst lists in the league, and are haemorrhaging injuries. It’s going to get nasty like quite a few of the results in the last round of last year. We’d probably need to beat down on Melbourne by 80 or 90 ourselves to give ourselves a shot. Don’t see it happening as unfortunately it looks like they plan on playing out the year.

If you think about how many different things had to go against us to not make top 4, it’s enough to make someone depressed. Even a draw agains Fremantle (Shultz had ball 40 meters out with 5 seconds left) would of been enough.

Absolutely cooked. Might as well have been ten goals down, we were never winning that game.

This is like the worst of Buckley honourable losses.

Coaches have lost the ****ing plot with selection and conservative shit tactics in game.

Forward setup is ****ed with McStay next to useless.

And not using the sub until halfway through the last quarter is the definition of cowardice. Too afraid of going against established players and taking one off to change things up.
As a supporter who sat through a 1 point defeat in 1966 & then a 10 point loss in 1970 & the draw in 1977 & then the 5 point defeat in 1979, I have no time for honourable losses. My general sense of it is that in most Collingwood losses it is that our forward line repeatedly let's us down & more specifically, it had been the key forwards. Now when you have 71 inside 50's to 37, then it is your forward line that costs you the game. So the scrutiny must applied to the forwards (excluding Elliot) & especially your key forwards such as McStay, Mihocek & Membrey. The latter kicked 2 goals & so I will give him a pass. OK. But the other 2, I cannot. Mihocek has been a very good servant to the club but unfortunately I think father time & a period of continuous physical battering has caught up with him in 2025. I hope that I am wrong. As for McStay, he has promised a lot but simply does not deliver. We badly need some young key forwards otherwise there will be more of the same. Yes; the umpiring was not great but good sides overcome such obstacles & ultimately win. I am afraid that we over the last 6 weeks - if not longer - we have wasted the season after a very promising start. Goodnight & good luck.

We don’t have to rely on other results. We just need to start winning and keep winning.
True Molly, if we win our next 5 games we win the flag. Assuming we don't fall into the top 4 which mean we need to win our next 4 games. I doubt top 4 will happen now though realistically. How likely do you think we will win our next 5 games though? Pretty hard to imagine given we have lost 5 of 6.

I am also not too stressed about losing top 2 or even top 4.

Premierships are won in September. And playing an extra game is not a death sentence for those who missed out on top 4. Just have to execute and have a reliable interchange.

Pies had their injury down time and rest time also, and they over trained the last few weeks so their tank is good for September, where they can ease up a bit on training and focus on tactics so the bodies are less worn.
sure, but our game doesnt look in good order

Geez, he must have had really bad gastro

I think it's best for us all to think Hill won't play again this season. If he does, bonus.
Quite happy to trade him for a high pick because the next few seasons we will be rebuilding. He has had a year for all of us to forget. Riches to rags.

Did we step on a black cat after the Carlton game?

Only one win in the last month and that was against Richmond
No black cat, just lit up a bunch of spliffs and congratulated each other on a great job of winning 14 games. It was a monumental achievement worthy of mentioning in the presser after the game as well.

I agree with a lot of that but it's also our method of entry. We'd be better dribble kicking it into F50 half the time than what we're doing.
