Claim 39 AFL games experience. Lewis is probably not ready to play AFL however I have to wonder if he could already perform better than O'Brien. In the VFL this year he have shown more consistent form than O'Brien has shown at the BHH in the past, has dropped less marks when he gets his hands on the ball, goes to ground less often and he's 5 cms taller and competes more strongly in the ruck. Sadly O'Brien seems to lack the competitive edge needed to rise to the next level. Against Coburg Lewis played a very good team game and displayed footy smarts with some taps to advantage and blocks to allow his team mates to break away. His snapped goal from around 45 metres was class as was his set shot from 45 metres on the boundary. He is a very good prospect.
Get him in.

Lewis has to be close. Been named in the emergencies twice in a row so if his form continues and TOB continues to be less than impressive his debut can't be far away surely.

They might be discounting his VFL form this week a bit because the opposition was Coburg who are not a strong team (didn't see the match so just going on past years).

If he's gonna kick three goals next week, as per the norm, I'd like him to do so at AFL level.

The Box Hill Hawks travelled out to Coburg in search of their third win from three games.

The Lions gave the Hawks an early scare with a seven-goal opening quarter to create a 15-point deficit at the first break.

But Chris Newman’s side were able to steady the ship, kicking 20 goals to five for the remainder of the game, to coast to a 72-point win.

Read below for Newman’s thoughts on each of his AFL-listed players’ performances.

How long would you estimate, hh, before we can make 'a very good prospect' into an AFL senior player?

What a difficult question to answer and I can only provide an opinion based on my observations. Mitch is very young and only turns 20 in October. I rate his improvement for a 198 cm tall highly compared to other KPPs. In his first year Mitch had a slow start but showed potential and gradual improvement playing back and forward before a shoulder injury finished his season. Following a shoulder reconstruction Mitch had a restricted pre-season however he showed a strong work ethic at training and a determination to be ready for the start of the season.

When Mitch was drafted his Calder Cannons coach Andrew Johnston said Hawthorn fans could look forward to a competitive key forward who had matured in the second half of the TAC Cup season. Jonhnston said “It was probably really the second half of the year where he focused in on what he could control and what he could do,” and “He played that really good game (against Gippsland) and showed what he can do if he really puts his mind to it." In the Round 15 TAC Cup game against Gippsland Power Mitch's statistics of 13 marks, 33 disposals and four goals indicate he is capable of playing elite games.

I like Mitch's strength in a contest and clean hands and he is a reliable set shot at goal. He has a good a team ethic and has shown the flexibility to play forward and back and compete in the ruck. His second efforts are good and he is capable below his knees. Given the improvement Mitch showed last year and his further improvement this year plus some signs of an x-factor at the Calder Cannons and BHH, I think he'll get his AFL chance this year and show some encouraging signs. To date he has ticked off football skills, strong contesting, determination in rehab and work rate therefore with a big pre-season following a taste of AFL experience in 2019 he is a very good prospect to be a contributor in the AFL in 2020 and a consistent performer in 2021.

Chris Newman's thoughts on Mitch's performance against Coburg are a good summary of his contribution.
15 disposals, 4 marks, 6 tackles, 11 hit-outs, 3 goals
“Mitch had another solid game. He hit the scoreboard and kicked three goals again, meaning he’s kicked three every game this year. He gave Pitto a bit of a chop out in the ruck and competed really well. Another good part about Mitch’s game is his tackling; to be a key position/ruck and have that ability at ground level is a really good asset for him. He’s been in solid form.”

Really appreciate that report hh. I guess after having my high hopes over the years of Lowden, Grimley and to a lesser extent Shem, shattered, as none fulfilled the potential they showed in their VFL days, and it's t
here they peaked.

Now, in 2019 we have a couple of talls who are getting very Box Hill reports, Lewis and Nash, albeit they both are very young, I would love to see them both taking contested pack marks in the seniors, not the same seniors as yours truly;).

I am sick and tired of watching our high bombs into the fwd 50(ref; slb over and over) getting marked by opposition defenders. If we had have had one or two talls taking the odd mark, or even making a contest, and forcing the defenders to spoil instead of marking we would have been far more competitive.

Rough is having problems, maybe carrying an injury which is slowing him somewhat, and Shoey and Tim don't seem to play constantly good footy, so I would love one or both of these youngsters given a chance to show us what they have to offer.

Rough is carrying a recovery from cancer. No one would come back from that quite on the same level as they were before going in, and even then Roughy wasn't a contested marking specialist.
