Only change that may happen is they may feel Ellis needs a 4 qtr run at Coburg. If so then Ellis for Batch.

Bit of a shame for the kid if he does go back to Coburg for a full game as he hasn't done a lot wrong in the last year and a bit.

how good was it?!!!! :D

Couldn't believe the space he was allowed at that bounce. Didnt WB come into the game thinking that they were going to take the game via their contested ball?

This sliding ruleis a real worry.
Same as deliberate out of bounds,it seems as though its been forgotten why the rules were introduced to begin with and common sense has left the building.
Yeah I totally agree. I've been saying for a while that the rules committee, rather than inventing new rules, or updating interpretations of the rules, should define the intention of the rules instead.

Remember 15-20 years ago explaining the rules of the game to foreigners. It was really pretty simple. Nowadays, you're allowed to drop the ball if you get tackled, but not if you've had "prior opportunity". If it gets jarred out in the tackle that's play on but if you had prior, then it's dropping the ball. If you're spoiling, then incidental contact to the head often gets through but by the letter of the law probably shouldn't but who really knows either way. You can tackle from behind, but if the leading player just stops you'll be penalised for in the back, even though you never actually pushed them. You can spoil in a marking contest but you can't chop the arms, but you can sometimes. You can't spoil these days if you're running with the flight of the ball, even if you're watching it over your shoulder because if you make even the slightest contact, its a free against, but you can poleaxe someone from the side as long as you don't chop the arms or smack them in the head or land on their back. And you're sometimes allowed to push a bloke in the back, but not in a marking contest, and not all the time either. It's beyond ridiculous. The fact that about 20% of the time the players are looking at the umpires once the whistle blows because nobody on the field has any idea which way it might be given.

Good example was when a bulldogs player was picking up the ball, Maric went to tackle but realised he was coming front on. He stopped, and never laid a hand on the player, who simply ran into him and was given a free for high contact. Now I'm all for protecting the head, but it used to be a high tackle, then high contact, and now if a player effectively headbutts you (I know I'm being a bit ridiculous here), then you are penalised. Surely if it is a high tackle, then you have to tackle the player?

Wow sorry for the wall of text.

/rant for now.....

Really hard to explain in writing. He was kicking the ball on the inside of his foot behind his body and somehow getting the ball to spin perfectly and be on target. And to be fair to Conca, he was making a good fist of it as well.

LMAO...hey tugg, do you know a good physiotherapist or someone who can come and untie me man.
Been trying to kick the ball on the inside of my left foot behind my body too but all i get is this:

I reckon if the rumours are true about Didak being called up, Ellis would be my pick to play on him. Morris to take Elliot.

You can pretty much guarantee that if Morris plays on Elliott he won't be enjoying as much space as he has these last few weeks. Don't see any changes this week to be honest, Knights staying in for Batch makes us a bit more potent up forward even though he's not close to his best yet. We've seen Newman do Batch's role for years so not worried about what it means defensively.

If anything the main difference between this week and the past 2 weeks was fitness... we were everywhere today.

I don't buy this first real test stuff against Collingwood because IMO that was against Carlton in round 1 and as a result we have stuffed their season up. Collingwood may come out thinking this is an easy game and a lot of our faithful are still thinking we will lose by 4 goals but I am not convinced. If Hawthorn can beat them by 55 points then so can we... Eat Em Alive!

No Change unless there is a match-up for Batchelor that is favourable.

4 goals was one of our biggest losing margins last season.
I reckon we've improved (just a tad) since we played them last!

I was at the collingwood game last year. We were never really a chance. Outplayed all day, especially in the third. Made it look respectable in the end, even though it was anything but. In saying that, I think they were a better team at this stage last year than they are right now, whilst we are much improved. Still expect the pies to find a way to win, but at the very least we will be competitive

Absolutely charming !

Should I check with you first to see if I am allowed to have an opinion ?

Grigg was often on his own, with no one to man up on. I was critical of him when he moved across, but he had a cracker of a season last year. He has not continued on for the first three games, and if he was tagging today, how come he spent most of time without manning up ?

Were you at the game ?
He made Libba redundant and linked up really well and generally his decision making was good.
Suggest you watch a replay if you get a chance.

There's a simple way to fix our accuracy in front of goal, and the tendency for Rance to fall over:
just mention them endlessly on this forum!

Think about it.
Preseason: "Vickery can't mark and should be dropped" and "McGuane is a dud and should be delisted" - round one, problem solved!
After round one: "Maric is a shadow of his former self" and "Ellis is an error prone liability" - round two, problem solved!
After round two: "we don't tackle enough" and "Dusty can't run out a whole game" - round three, problem solved!

I therefore predict we will kick 24.2.146, and Rance will be BOG.
And if we keep up the criticism we will have achieved perfection* by season's end.

*Cotch is already perfect.

Last year is just that dude, last year. I dont look at last year when doing form for this year..all I know is we are flying with a list that has players from last year in the 2s and the scum have Maxwells, Jollys and Rieds struggling from injury...;)

Thomas killed us in the first few minutes of the third, apart from that it wasnt a one way traffic for the Pies, at least we had a good last qtr winning it by 20 (yep they took the foot off a little, but not a lot)

Interesting looking at this years stats and we have the Pies covered in almost every area instead of tackles, cont possessions (just) and 1%ers (just)

I like the idea of rance in a new role...everybody can see his assets but down the last line of defence he's not steady enough. maybe he needs different boots or something. Maybe Grimes and rance should swap roles. I
saw Fletcher playing on Ballantyne at one stage in that game, so height doesn't have to be the only factor in match ups. Maybe Rance to a wing if he can be released out of the backline? Astbury as a replacement?
just finished watching the game (have to take the above comments back)...i didn't notice rance fall over at all and had a fairly good game,, his opponent got 4 (not sure if on rance all the time)
didn't mind griggs' game either, grimes still easing into it,
maric better this week,
edwards hands getting better,
tuck needs to learn the slide rule, good to see dusty have a good one,
knights to stay in for his kicking,
jack - how many frees against? ffs!! not good play (umpiring was OK, i reckon, )

agree with this too. every week has been a test against sides that have had the wood on us for years. each week we've shown something different:
how to hold on in a close one. (carlton)
how to maintain intensity in a close one (saints)
how to maintain intensity in a blow out (dogs)

i expect a good level of intensity from the boys again.

It's a massive week this week for Mcguane to bring this footy to the table in a big game.
For Jacko to stay on the right side of the cliff he walks upon in terms of discipline.Teams like the Pies are expert at getting under blokes skin.
For Lids. This one is huge. To me he is probably the premier all round player in the A.F.L now and I want to see him tear up a big game in a big way. He was born for this shit.
For Tucky. These are his types of games with a lot of physical in tight work. I'm expecting Tuck to have a big big day.
A lot to look forward to and see where we are at.

yep, were going to find out alot about this squad against Collingwood: not just in terms of win/lose but who goes into their shell and who dares to strut their stuff in a genuinely significant game. its one thing being pumped up as underdogs, or beating the team's personal bogey men.. this is big match in which we will either demonstrate we are ready to bear the weight of expectation and have the self-belief of a finals team, or still something of a work in progress mentally.

saw the game last night: lots to comment on, but one thing that struck me was how differently our forward line operated. Usually it has been, kick deep into the 50, take a mark, and if we cant take a mark, force a contest or a stoppage... the last part where King, Nahas and Edwards would often run riot with run, or provide ferocious forwward defense. For the first time in memory King had an extremely quiet time inside 50 and infact was up at CHF/Centre for a lot of kicks, and there wasnt really any small men providing the defensive pressure inside 50... it was provided by the talls themselves, and by the HB/C/HF line swarming down the field. King's 'traditional' forward line role just wasnt there yesterday. Wonder if that was just a tactic for the day, or the nature of the game as it unfolded, or an actual change of direction by the coaches.

I thought it was the same apart from moving into the middle a little more than usual, ended up with 6 marks, 4 assists and 12 score involvements and 10 pressure acts, great forward half effort from the little fella.
