I think we're too tall up forward especially since the sub rule means that we are playing Cox or Naitanui as tall forwards - leaves Lynch as one tall too many.

That said, Darlings mobility has been a surprise and Lynch has been contributing pretty well. I thought we looked better today with Kennedy closer to goal and Lynch up the ground.

I thought it was interesting that Darling was singled out in the discussion about 4 tall forwards by Woosh (in his post game presser) who advised that "we dont play him as a tall forward"...

I understand his point, but the reality is that if we see guys like Steve Johnson & Lecca as medium forwards, he isn't one of them, he just isnt. So he is an agile tall rather than a non-tall and should allow us to play 2 others max instead we play 3 and try and pretend we aren't over tall ...

4 talls is too many and so is 3 talls and an agile tall who isn't a medium. Darling should give us the advantage of being able to play 3 tall marking types and 3 medium/smalls while retained our agility and speed ... we do ok but at times this year we have again had periods where we are lamentable at getting the ball that hits the ground from a marking contest. I mean folks got pissed at NN missing the big pack mark late, but he took 2 defenders out and if we had of had Phil Matera and say an Ash Sampi (circa 2005) at ground level we would have been praising NN's contest as they roved the spill and goaled ...

Kennedy, darling and lynch works

Kennedy, darling and nat/cox works

a combination of four of those doesn't, even moreso when lecras comes back as he is more a medium forward thana true crumber

I think lynch has provided more as a forward than either cox or nat so far but without the realistic option of rotating coxand nat off the bench it leaves us with a quandary. All of those big blokes are contributing but team balance means we have one too many. Logic dictates that one is lynch which is a shame because I genuinely like the guy

Why aren't people listening to WOOSH.

He said that we are only playing 2 talls up forward Lynch and Kennedy.
We also have the 2 ruckmen like we have had for the last 10 years.

Darling is a 191 cm rover.

I bet ya he has beaten Phil Matera for tackles in a spate of 7 games (including all pre-season games)

He was solid.

Our lack of forward targets is a bigger issue than the midfield.
Our forward targets have filled our best players spots for the last 2 weeks...

In 2011 Darling is a mid size player. Check his size against the top line midfielders

Your point about NN is spot on as huge contest - in addition poor camera angle but a likely missed free to Nic for interference

Can people please stop suggesting Strjik as a in. More chance of Scott Burns getting a game then this bloke atm, Hes not fit, had little in the way of pre season and is not even in the ballpark atm im afraid

OUT: Brown, Dudziell
IN: Swift, Hams

NN was poor yesterday - but that was a good contest.

He did the same against Port a few times which created goals out the back. He attracts a crowd and brings the ball down - if we can have guys stay on the ground - we'll score goals.

Strijk did kick 4 goals in limited possessions. He'd be a pretty decent option for a sub actually, certainly better than Dalziell.

Naitanui is playing with an injured shoulder that probably requires surgery. He is going to struggle for most of the year IMO but we need to get games into him.

nah - think that's just looking for excuses.

he's been smashing the ruck so far - and influencing games.

just put in a stinker

NN looked tentative in any sort of contest yesterday. Not playing with any intensity.

Forgot how crap/ineffective Ebert was yesterday, he is really just a waste at the moment.

Don't know what his stats were; can't be bothered looking them up, but he was certainly quiet = ineffectual even. I would prefer to see Weedon / stryk in that role - more hurt factor.

This is a sensible man.

The issue can not be avoided though.

Schofield is potentially the best of the young backs but I fear for his place in the squad. I'll go against my head and stick with my gut, I think we should persist with Schofield leaving Brown the odd man out.
I am a bit undecided on that. Certainly Schofield is quick and tries to create more by running forward but he is too easily beaten in 1 on 1 contests and makes it worse by going to ground on almost every occasion therefore making it easy for forwards to run off him.

Brown is a good honest old fashioned defender. He does worry a bit when he throws the ball on to the boot but then he also takes a more dangerous forward than Schofield simply because he is much stronger.

On average, Brown is the better option of the 2 at the moment although both have potential. Schofield will struggle to be a key defender but is handy because of his pace and run. He just needs to learn not to over commit and keep his feet. Brown just needs game time. Unfortunately for Schofield, while we have Brown, MacKenzie and Glass, he should not play in the backline unless there are injuries or the match ups demand it.

Same outs

In: Brennan/J Jones, Shep/B Wilson, Hams/Broome, Strijk/Weedon
I really can't understand the love for Hams on here. He is a good honest footballer who competes well and would have been handy against Sydney but he doesn;t crumb a lot of goals and isn't quick enough to be outstanding. If people think he will provide a loy of goals I think they are kidding themselves....of course I am always happy to be proven wrong. Weedon and Swift are provising a hell of a lot more at WAFL level and I would certainly have either before Dalzeil or McGinnity. (Although I thought McGinnity played well against Sydney and was a bit unlucky. I think what counted against him was that in either the 3rd or last quarter when the game was on the line, he took his eye off the ball and pulled his head in instead of competing and dropping him may be a wake up call.)

There are concerns about Weedon at the moment as he seems to go missing at times but he is very creative when he gets the ball. Swift has improved disposal immensely but some of his kicks are "centimetre perfect" when on first glance it looks like he may have stuffed up. I am not yet convinced this is due to skill rather than good fortune at times.

Either way, at least both compete and put their body on the line and both seem to be team players. Strjke, Stevens and Sheppard must also be in the running. I notice Dalzeil is credited with 5 disposals in the last quarter. I must have dozed off when that happened!!!

Absolutely. We have been trying for years to make Cox a forward and it has never worked. NN looks like he could be dangerous but just doesn't hold marks and of course we have no crumbers. Just have to bite the bullet and use Cox off the bench when he needs a rest.
