Autopsy Round 7 vs Saints rant thread

Disappointing loss, can't believe the negativity from fans though. Tear those memberships up and move on then

You can't believe the negativity? What game were you watching?

I don't mind seeing my team lose to better apposition but I can't handle seeing them play soft footy. I live in Queensland so my membership = donation. Seems wasted after watching games like that.

As a Bombers supporter I thought it was hilarious to watch you guys pump yourself up so early in the season. Surely it was too early to tell. You know what though, it goes both ways. It's too early in the year to write off your team as well. If they are good enough, they'll adapt and improve. Premierships aren't handed out in round 7.

take care not to fall into that trap yourself ;)

i was worried myself... we really need to wait for another 10 weeks to see who pulls away, this year and the media storm around each successive side is schizophrenic and confusing. it's hard not to get your sails up sometimes... losses like this need to turn into the kick in the ass (supporters and players)

Its been like this for three weeks. They've figured out that the key to stopping our forward line is to clog it up. We never do anything about it, and our loose man in defence tends to be about as effective as having a cardboard cutout of david kernahan down there would be.

Exactly! Essendon did it to us in round 4 and we stil haven't reacted to it. I don't think the coaching staff realise that the turnovers are what lose you the game, doesn't matter if it's in backline or where-ever. It shouldn't be hard to fix it but we refuse to.

Yeah I do actually mate. You ever played it?

Less than 15 touches and only two tackles. Look, I admire the man's endeavour but he is not an afl standard player.

...the worst part is half of them looked out of their depth tonight.
trust me i have
like ellard some shit is worth more than stats likewise some crap costs us more
u don't know what it means and where fault lies

Team selection was poor also. Thornton should have played because we were found out for height all night and all over the ground. Joseph and Russell need a spell.

Not sure about that mate. Hampson and Kreuzer had significant height advantages tonight. Combination of they weren't good enough in the air tonight and the Saints defence working together really well.

Admittedly i didn't watch the game (and probably wont), but the radio coverage said Army had a run with role tonight and played ok.

Here is a look at why our over rated midfield is actually doing very poorly. And it's because it's a very ordinary midfield. In fact if i rated it it would be about somewhere in the bottom part of the 8, Maybe lower.

2005

1. Murphy - Good Get
4. Kennedy - Good Get
20. Bower - Average get.

Andrew Swallow went at pick 43. Would have been ideal.

2006

1. Kreuzer - Ruckman who doesn't take marks and doesn't win a lot of taps but tries hard to make up for it but end of the day he's not doing a big man job all that well. Again, desperate for a ruckman at the time.
36. Browne - average half back, never up to it.
46. Armfield - a good average player, really good get this low down.

Cotchin went 2, unquestionably the player of that draft, the sort we lack, already had plenty of ruckmen coming through...
Dangerfield, Rioli, Taylor, Selwood are handy too.
How did we draft Browne ahead of Mayne!

2007
1. Gibbs - A good half back flanker, we were desperate at the time for this type, can't play on the ball the save himself, hates it physical. More of a lower first rounder/high second round pick player in terms of quality. Stick's mate's son.
17. Hampson - A handy ruckman who can kick a few as a forward, turning out good get.
19. Grigg - Playing good footy in the midfield, for another club, no denyin it this was a bad loss.
35. Austin - just an average player who is going ok at another club.

Tippett went at pick 32, not really sure if he would have been a good get or not.

Should have drafted selwood at number 1, turned out probably the best player of the draft, suprisingly overlooked by a few, Geelong's recruiter really is the best in the business.

2008
6. Yarran - Good player.
too early to tell with the others.

2009
11. Mclean - Shocker, the mind just boggles, we got reamed.
12. Lucas - light weight one dimensional running player who can kick a goal but is soft at the contest. Fit's in with our recruiter's obsession with slightly built running players who are midfield sizrd but not really onballers and will always lack size and strength.

We used pick 11 on mclean when we could have drafted Fyfe.

If we had drafted Selwood instead of Gibbs, Cotchin instead of Kreuzer and kept Jacobs, Swallow instead of Bower, Mayne instead of Browne and Fyfe instead of Mclean we would be a far better side than what we are.

We are paying for going hard and drafting players like Russell around the 188cm mark who are half back flankers/athletes and have neglected drafting genuine center men. We have a lot of tall winger and flanker types and stuff all in the way of quality on ball types. This is the 4th game in a row we have been smacked in the clearances.

We have Judd, Murphy and Carrazzo and these are the three centermen that are any good, the rest are pinch hitters best suited to other positions or are just not all that good. Robinson goes close but has too many quiet patches. Ellard and Curnow are just ordinary players. When Simpson, Gibbs, Scotland etc are going on the ball this is just for rotation, none are really onballers and are able to make an impact and bust the ball out really well though Scotland his his moments.

Do we have an obsession with lightly built players? Or do we not use the gym well enough because we are getting monstered each week and shown up for strength and size, especially in the middle. When we tackle they get the handball away and when they tackle us it gets locked up or we incorrectly dispose it. When push comes to shove at stoppages and marking contests the best we can do is come out 50/50 but often we are the ones who get shifted.

Warnock, Kreuzer, Henderson, Waite, Bower, Walker, Judd (this year), Lucas, Gibbs, Simpson, Curnow, Armfield, Garlett and Ellard are all light weight players who aren't over strong or over big and and struggle to shift an opponant one on one. This is a fair bloody chunk of our best 22 who aren't overly strong or big bodied. This is why our opposition are closing games up as best they can and stopping us from running and this is why our contested work and clearance work is shithouse. We aren't big enough and we aren't strong enough and we haven't drafted any where near enough genuine quality specialist onballers.

What we need to do, have a mini clean out at season's end. Draft really hard on specialist onballers and clearance players who are strongly built. Steer clear of tall flanker/winger types, lightly built types and hesitant types. Also we need to look to trade into the first and second round of the draft. Bower, Mclean, Russell, Joseph, Ellard, Warnock and maybe an even higher profile player to go for picks. In the meantime we need to play Mclean and find a way around his lack of pace.

We have so many players who have gone backwards this year.
Robinson - struggling to get to the fall of the ball, looks unfit
Garlett - no intensity, poor decision making forward of centre
Gibbs - play him midfield, resting up forward FFS
Touhy - seems confused by tagging/lockdown roles
Duigan - the drop off is hard to believe
Joseph - compare the EF in Perth to the dross he served up tonight

Hard to win when half the team are expecting others to get them the ball, no sheparding, blocking etc.
Very disillusioned.

Was given the job on Nicky Dal and did it well enough. We could use more guys with Army's spirit and less millionaires.

i can tell u army was given a task a simple task and he did it 100%
mc will not blame him for doing exactly what was asked of him

F50 entries are still as abysmal as ever. Won the inside 50 count again and lose with a pea hearted effort from a number of players, if not all.

Where were the marking targets up forward apart from Waite? Our forward line completely broke down because we couldn't even make a contest and get the crumbers into it. We were stretched a little bit in defence too. Do you think I think you could have sacrificed a player like Joseph for another tall and that would have given us more structure.

Heres what you do champ. Bump the posts where you picked all of these BEFORE the drafts or piss off with your hindsighting. We can all do that, not too many can do this BEFORE THE DRAFT though. Piss poor post.

The backline was insipid,Bower,Russell,Henderson,Joseph and Jamison were witches hats.young Bootsma looked good last game but Ratten goes with the same guys who lack any composure and not give the kid another crack, defies logic. We look worse with Waite can we kick Bower out and send Waite down back. For some one who was the Messiah Gibbs is a shadow.
Simpson,Robbo.Judd ,Ellard and Kruezer at least tried.

Yep, with hindsight it looks like it was a bad call.

Who would you have dropped to fit him in though? Again, with hindsight I would think Joseph.

I'll leave those questions to the MC but my perception is we've been structurally deficient in being down a tall. Relying on Walker, Betts and Garlett as per last year hasn't worked.

Thornton, Bower, Waite, Jamison and Henderson can all play in the one side. Even with 2 rucks, that's still 11 'smalls' on the field at any one one time (12 depending on who's having a 5 minute rest).

Been said by a few posters about the extra defender in our forward line all year, it is the easiest way to beat Carlton. Adelaide will do this from the first bounce, no need to change gameplans mid-game, it is 100% certain to happen, how will the coaching staff overcome this?

for us duigan would be the better loose man than gibbs if they insist on that strategy. just hope at the moment they don't put someone too quick on him. rotating the back pockets was chairs on the titanic. i can forgive tuohy, but joseph really stunk. time for russell to start making the back flank/pocket his role again.
