Yeah, that is the team.

Emergencies are Cook, Warnock and Gilmore.

I actually am quite happy with the team. Of course I would like see see Ibbo, Collard and Drum crack a game soon but for now, I think it is close to our best 22 minus Farmer, Peake and Longmuir. Maybe Schammer and Thornton too.

I'd love to see Mundy foward of the ball, perhaps swapping with Webster at some stage. Would love to see the ball in his hands as Pav was leading.

Unfortunately, I don't think the gloved one is in our best 22 anymore. That old knee is robbing him and dosent look like it will improve. Damn shame.

Yeah... it's unfortunate.... people tend to forget how good he actually is when up and firing. I'm hopeful he can be back next season to somewhere near his best.

I'm a little confused. if you think it is close our best 22, minus Farmer, Peake and Longmuir (and maybe Thornton and Scahmmer, and given that there are already 3 emergencies), then why would you want Ibbotson, Collard and Drum to crack a game soon? That already puts them as between 27-33 on our list. Are you suggesting that we don't play our best 22 for the sake of giving some other players experience?

Well Longmuir is basically gone for the year. Farmer Rd 13. Peake is still 2-3 weeks away from playing for the seniors.

Not all 3 of them but atleast playing one or two wouldn't hurt. I'd like some of the younger mids to get some game time. There are 2 or 3 players in our seniors who I think while playing decent footy at times, their best is not good enough to get us a flag. I think it would be a good idea to fast track the development of 1 or 2 of these players.

Look at Brisbane, Port, etc. They are playing their youngsters and it is paying dividends. Yeah, it might make us slightly weaker is the really short term, but as time goes on, I think it will it will pay dividends and will put us in better shape to win the flag.

Otherwise what will happen? We will go through this season.... come up short and then next season, these players will finally get some decent playing time but won't have the experience to excel. I think give them a good taste now, and then let them excel next season.

Re giving the young guys a go - I think there's also a bit of a spark, or some enthusiasm that comes when teams play their younger blokes, and it seems to lift the whole team (eg Bris, PA, Collingwood). Sometimes we tend to look pretty old and tired, not boiling over with enthusiasm.

Edit: sorry, just noticed there's a whole thread on this!

Where do you see Drummie playing this year Kenny? His best position is half forward, and he can also play half back. He can't get a kick for Perth playing on ball so there is no chance of him playing in the middle at afl level any time soon.

Collard isn't fit enough to play AFL at present. A wet and windy day in Geelong certainly isn't the time to debut a flashy young player who isn't at peak fitness, hopefully he has a big week on the track (South have the bye) and is selected against the saints in 8 days time.

Ibbo isn't up to AFL level at present IMO. Possibly after the split round, but by then Peake, Schammer, Browne and Dunn will be available.

I'd love to see the young guys getting a run aswell Kenny, but apart from Warnie none of them deserve to be selected this week. Poor Campbell might miss out again.

Warnie definately travelled, but surely Cook was on the plane too? Hase is under an injury cloud and with showers and strong winds forecast, Cookie should be there and if he isn't it's a poor decision.

Someone on DL said that Gilmore travelled also, as South have the bye. Warnock definitely went (saw him on Ch10 news), so can't see that Cookie went - they wouldn't take all 3 emergencies.

Broadbridge said Hase is right to go.

Geelong Weather: Scattered showers. A cool to mild day with moderate to fresh north westerly winds becoming locally strong about the coast and tending west to south westerly later.

I'm not sold in our ability in the wet, and could really use a few more small guys.

If the weather is really bad it will be interesting to see if they go with Warnie, Happy or Kiwi as the second ruckman.

Assuming Warnock or Gilmore will play, who misses out? Walker or Duffield? Both were pretty good last week.

I'd be disappointed if Broadbridge had said anything else regardless of whether Hase will play or not.

Pav will be on the footy show panel tonight.

They might not be "ready" in that they can come in and play excellent footy, but do you think the youngsters at other clubs were at that stage of their development when they debuted? They were thrown in there to see what they had. I know their teams were struggling (in a rebuilding phase) and they might have been forced to play the youngsters, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

Do you think all the youngsters debuted for Brisbane, do you think they were more ready than Ibbo for instance? When the Kangaroos threw Swallow in the team, was he more ready than Ibbo or Collard? Was Surjan for Port?

Drum was playing really well last season before he did his hamstring. He was doing a good job in the forward line with his tackling. He was quick, agile and looked very promising. Rather than bringing Cook back as some are suggesting, wouldn't it be better throwing Drum in that role? What is the point in playing Cook when he obviously has very little footy in him left? Why not see if Drummie can improve from last season? As for his role, I'd like to see him coming off the bench and being used where needed, he is versatile. He cannot win his own ball consistantly yet, but I can see him running through the midfield. McManus cannot win his own football but no-one has a problem playing him in the midfield.

And I wasn't talking about this week, but the coming few weeks. I agree that Collard would be better brought in next week than this week.

Kenny - I agree with you 110%. Even more that 110% - 1010%. ;)

If we lose this week and are sitting 3-5, time to throw caution to the wind and let some of the young fellas have a run. Because clearly what they are doing now is not working.

Who was it that said, "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got."

And, "The definition of insanity is to continue doing the same thing while expecting different results."

Remember how Peakey always looked average in the WAFL - but came into AFL and was an (almost) instant hit. Maybe there's another one like that in Collard or Ibbo. Maybe Drummie will lift at the next level. He's a good footballer - a smart footballer - he couldn't do any worse than say MCarr or Gilmore...

Thanks for the reply Kenny.

Other sides play their kids in the second half of the year when there is no chance of making the finals. Eagles, Crows and Swans wouldn't be playing Ibbo or Drum this week. IMO Ibbo hasn't done enough to be selected at this stage, hopefully he can have a big few weeks in the wafl and debut against Richmond (I always think that local boys should debut at Subi).

Recruiting Tarrant and Solomon and the form of Campbell will make it very hard for Drum and Murphy to get a game. As good as Tarrant has been I'm starting to think it would have been better to take 5 kids in the draft.

Yeah, they were doing it because they couldn't make the finals but the end results? Both clubs have better midfields than us. That's why I think we should be proactive in playing them rather than playing the season, not winning the flag, then expecting them to step up all of a sudden next season If we seriously don't challenge for a flag next season, we will lose years of hard work.

Let's be honest, it doesn't look likely we are going to win the flag this season so let's get these kids AFL hardened as soon as possible and if only 1 or 2 become good AFL players, we will be in a better situation than what we are in now.

It is a small step back for a large foot forward imo.

Unfortunately the answer to all three is yes.

Ibbotson is looking very good in patches in the first third of the WAFL season, but when then again Walker played one WAFL and got BOG with close to forty possesions. When Ibbotson shows he can perform to that level in the WAFL then Walker or someone else will make way for him.

Collard looks ready, but is just not fit enough at the moment. He failed a fitness test prior to the game the other week, and is yet to finish a full WAFL game like he has petrol in the tank. He is not ready to take the spot of a player who has recently completed a vigourous pre-season in which they did four times the amout of fitness and endurance training.
