Carlton = Glass Cannon.

So much effort into drafting your "silky outside types" that we have been left behind by teams with grunts.

Look at Essendon with Stanton, Lonergan and Watson, Lonergan is short but he's a unit, Watson is a monster and Stanton is a built version of Carazzo.

None of those guys have the greatest skills, but they are killing it just by being harder and stronger.
Stanton is a built version of Carrazzo?

Really?

Watson and Stanton aren't harder and bigger than Judd and Murphy.

They drafted Heppell, Colyer, Melksham and Zaharakis who aren't harder than Gibbs, Yarran, Robinson and Lucas.

Talk about overreacting and being sucked in by all the bullshit about their hardness.

Game plan is now redundant, full stop. Back to the drawing board big time.

Weak links are killing us: if BF readers can identify Russell, Duigan and Tuohy as our bottom 3 then you can bet the opposition does. These three were in a back line under constant bombardment and had less then 20 possessions between them. Out of form is an understatement.

Good to see we have now rested Kreuzer.

Agree TG...

I'm going to throw a bone, Mitchell played on the weekend and will be ready in 4-6 weeks...

Hardness at 198cm and 100kg... We need to roll the dice with the forwards as Kreuzer and Hammer are not the answers...

By rock bottom guns I meant, that point when all the arrogance in thinking your shit don't stink but in reality it hits you that in fact it does stink, and that it's actually been your farts that have been giving you away all along is realized.
finally something has made me smile

I remember reading something a few years back on our recruiting and it stated we were looking to recruit athletic players to inject pace into our list to utilize the run and carry method.

The trouble is when you recruit too many athletic types you actually run the risk of what I think we have at our club.

Too many players who have very little "football smarts".

As soon as we're under the pump or our game plans been picked apart we seem to look clueless out on the park as to how to overcome these situations.

- How are we getting so smashed in the clearances with Kreuzer and Hampson as our rucks, with Warnock in the reserves??

- Why the hell was Robinson assigned to a 'forward tag' role when we have been humiliated in the clearances over the last month?

- How is Jordan Russell still playing AFL football?? Surely a career in the meat industry beckons, given how much he butchers the football...

- Three weeks in a row, Murph has copped a hard tag... Now, any normal person would think that 'hey, seeing as he was one of our main ballwinners, let's put some work into his opponent at every opportunity and work him over'... but no, J-Mac, Jones, and now Van Berlo all allowed to walk all over Murph like they owned him. Any wonder we're down in clearances.

- Bret Thornton... must you get in everyone's way when you play forward? The amount of times this year he has gotten in front of a Walker, or Hampson/Kreuzer instead of dragging his man away from the contest... Stupidity at its best. Be a bit more selfless and peel away from a contest every now and then. It's bad enough that we are kicking to Betts and Walker to begin with but creating a 6-7 man pack doesn't help their chances.

- Jeff and Eddie... did the new boots take away their ability to put FORWARD PRESSURE on the opposition??? How come this year we just can't lock the ball in our forward line.. it's come out so easily

- Following from the above, I'd love to see how many coast to coast goals / scores we have conceded this year. Forward line pressure has been awful, zoning has been awful, and teams have taken advantage of this with a long kick over the top of our zone, with their small forwards running onto it resulting in a goal...

- Is there an attitude problem at Carlton? Is it arrogance? I got the feeling over the last month the boys just think they deserve it this year and it's all just going to magically happen. Keep the players out of the media and all the footy shows, flog the shit out of them on the training track and those who aren't up to scratch send them to Preston.

No point singling out players because, aside from a handfull they were all rubbish.

Why was Robinson isolated in the forward line for 2 quarters when we're getting pumped in the middle and no delivery inside 50

I think the game plan is done, teams know that we will kill them with space....so they don't give us any. We need to win clearances for our game to come off and apart from Judd, nobody is willing to get their hands dirty.

Bring McLean in, at least he gives a **** and will actually protect Judd and Murphy.

The fact we cannot play well and have no plan B for Etihad is a massive indictment on Ratten.

You're probably one of those guys that yammers on all preseason about how "Massive" guys like Bower are. Judd isnt "Big" he's a rake that wins contested ball because he's smarter and stays on his feet. Murphy is getting there, but Callinan from the Crows is built harder.

Watson is a tank, we do not have a midfielder on our list with the body to impact a contest like he does, similar to Kennedy from the Swans or Thompson from the Crows. Those guys are built for hard footy.

We do not have those types of players on our list, except maybe Scotland, but he floats around like Gibbs.

Thank God - Ive been excited by Mitchell for a while, we need to get him into the team.

Here's what we are facing till the end of the year :

Melbourne and Port - Should win both of these, Port could beat us based on their win and our shit.

Then we meet Geelong,West Coast, Collingwood, bye, Hawthorn - lose all of these.

So we are looking at, from Saints to Hawks - 2 wins from 9 weeks of footy - If we beat Melbourne and Port.

That is our season right there.

Brisbane, Gold Coast, Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Melbourne and Port are the only teams we will play between now and the end of the year we could beat right now.

Richomond, Sydney, Essendon, Saints will all beat us etc based on our current form.

That is 6 potential wins between now and the end of the year - I seriously cant see us beating anyone else on our current form and list.

So the absolute truth is - thats our season right there. So lets get serious and start blooding new players in a new game plan - has to happen.

What is it all the scouts say?

"You can teach an Athlete to play football, but you cant teach a footballer to be an athlete". Mark Browning used to say that when he was selecting Queensland teams, and off would go these little 18yr old pogo stick/marathon runners to get pumped by 30 goals by little nuggets from vic country.

this was highlighted on the radio coverage I was listening as our biggest concern as it was making the midfield get eaten and the backline always under pressure. Not just 2 players but the unit

I thought the effort was there, particularly early on. I blame the drafting and we're just not tall or strong enough. We're just going to keep sitting around 5-8 on the ladder unless something changes.
Spot on. I think most of the team put in the effort but we were just outclassed by a better team.

We finished 5th last year with a fairly average second half of the season, and nothing has really changed from last year to say we have improved. We haven't recruited any new players or developed/elevated any of our existing players so we have effectively stagnated. The demise from the top 4 by Geelong and Hawks has been filled by Essendon and Crows who have both leap frogged us, so top 4 looks out of reach again.

With injuries to Murphy and Carrazzo (arguably 2 of our best midfielders) and Laidler, our team is probably worse off than last year and we may even struggle to make the 8.

We need a Sam Mitchell or Jobe Watson like onballer right about now.

Fmd, I know this is a rant thread but losing a bye - that's a bit extreme isn't it.

today I was frustrated, angry, and disgusted by our performance.
some can blame murphy's injury, but the fact is that today we were not a team. I see a few players trying, but others were merely bystanders.
at the end of the first quarter i thought to myself, the boys have redeemed themselves for their ugly performance on monday night, but a goalless second quarter and a woeful 2nd half showed me that I spoke too soon.
we have got to lift, and to put it bluntly, we are damn lucky to have melbourne and port adelaide the next fortnight.

When you dissect it, our list might be a tad over rated. The way I like to look at it is who's would get a game in a really good team like Collingwood or Geelong last year?
I know I'll get shot down for this but it's an honest opinion of where we are at.

Probably's:
Murphy - been heavily tagged with no support.
Judd - superstar without much support either.
Simpson - teams have finally worked out how good this man really is. Shut him down and you are one step closer to beating us.
Jamison - spoils well but no support when it hits the deck
Henderson - really come on, no pressure from our mids make these guys jobs near impossible
Kreuzer - best ruck we have but can't do it on his own. Maybe little confused if he's a forward or ruck
Betts - hard to beat you 2 on one 6.5 ft opponents when the ball nearly hits the roof
Scotland - reliable run but never has too much to go to when running out of defense
Walker - needs to lift but delivery into forward line has been woeful, is a great player non the less

Possibly's:
Garlett - goes missing too often and looks a little dis interested
Yarran - hopefully wasn't rushed back too soon. Needs more consistency
Robinson - tries so hard, wouldn't have him out of the team but seems to have not progressed since last year.
Gibbs - needs to show more heart, hardness and accountability
Tuhoy - see Robinson
Duigan - again seems to have not progressed since last year.

Probably not:
Armfield - love his hardness but decision makes is often too poor
Curnow - I find this guy way too predictable. You know what he is going to do a week before he does it.
Russell - gone! Has shown nothing, way too many basic skill errors and very poor decision making. Why the dropped Lucas for him has me baffled!
Thornton - goest missing way too often, not a forward or backman
Bower - out of form big time!
Ellard - I personally don't mind this guy but don't think he does enough through the mid to justify his selection.

There is way to many passengers in our team the last few weeks and I honestly can't see us in finals contention with a side like this. You can only afford to have one, maybe two fringe players and we currently have at least 6 - 8 in the senior team.
I hope the second half of the year I eat my words but we need a serious rocket up the middle and lower tier players if we are to progress on last year. It's not just going to happen.

there is no point in dissecting the structures - no forward pressure because as a unit - it is always changing so no patterns in attack or defense.

Midfield has gone from equal to anyone - to one of the worst as far as see ball get ball goes..

team morale? they don't talk to each other on the field- Murph on bench - Kreuz comes in - Murph looks at Kreuz - Kreauz doesn't say anything..looks away - nothing.... Look into coaches box- Ratts is sitting in back row... like a rabbit in spotlights- "this shouldnt be happenning..how is it happenning? what do I do now?.. everyone else in box knows it is game ove - look straight ahead - no talk nothing...r ..." 2nd quarter...

Ratts has been harping on about " versatile players and a flexible team" it just hasn't worked - you cant rotate small bodied players around in different positions - they are small bodied player anywhere..you cant rotate ordinary backs who are rotated into forward lien to kick goals -Bower;

anyway against bigger teams - we cant win the ball OR stop the ball..

if we had three or four serious bodies to throw at the rucks - we would - but we don't..so enjoy getting smashed every week...

you don't think some of the players cant see what the problem is? Murph threw himself at Dangerfield- to show everyone else how they should go in -bad luck he injured himself doing it..just bad luck ...

but why does he have to show the see ball get ball way to a few of teh others whose job it is to do it...they know they are too small to go in against bigger bodies - every time..that's why they hang off..

too many VFL bodies in the team .

so yeah suck it up..it isn't our year - we don't have the cattle for the type of footie that can be played against us by those teams who can ....no see ball get ball capability, no see opponent smash opponent capability - call it what you like- too soft, too small, lacking intent - dun matter al ends up with same result..

gaaaaaaaaaaaawn..bye bye..

Disappointing result today.

Although it might be seen as a soft option, now is a good a time as any to play Melbourne. We don't have the cattle outside the 22 right now to be able to drop 4 or 5 guys, to replace our players low on form. The only way forward is for the players low on form, to basically, pick up their shit. Melbourne have been awful so far this year, and we will beat them comfortably. It does present an opportunity for some vital players to get back into form, namely Russell, Duigan, Touhy, Gibbs, Garlett and even Kreuzer.

Although most of you argue that playing Melbourne and Port Adelaide in the next 2 weeks will just 'mask the problems', another way to look at it, is that it gives us the opportunity to start again. Some players down on form get a chance to build some confidence, we can probably grab a few big wins, and get our percentage back up. After that, we should sit 7-3, and we get a chance to effectively, start again. That will leave us with 12 weeks, in which we probably need to, given the evenness of the competition, win 9 of to make the top 4. Laidler, Carrazzo and hopefully Murphy will only be 1-2ish weeks away by then.

We then obviously face Geelong, West Coast and Hawthorn, which will give us a great indication of where we are at, keeping in mind anyone can beat anyone on their day.

As for immediate changes, whilst we would like to be able to make a statement, we don't have the cattle too. Having said that, form needs to be rewarded so I would go:

OUT: Murphy (injury), Thornton and one or two of Curnow, Touhy and Duigan (injury)
IN: McLean, Collins, Waite.

Bootsma ready if MC wants to make 4+ changes.

Lets relax, we will be back on the winners list in 7 days.
you dont actually believe that he is vital to our team do you?

I thought the effort was there, particularly early on. I blame the drafting and we're just not tall or strong enough. We're just going to keep sitting around 5-8 on the ladder unless something changes.

Concur, the really dissapointing part was I thought the effort largely was there. I felt sorry for our guys, I knew it was going to boys against men and it was. We need some genuinely strong, hard but fast bodies. Looking at the Northern Blues we don't have many of those coming through either. Our drafting could be very different this year. If you're a light, sometimes clever, outside mid, maybe times up and I wouldn't hold hopes of coming here.
