The Hawks enjoyed a week off to recover from a hard-fought five point victory over the Zebras at Wonthaggi Recreation Oval in round 7. The Lions triumphed on the road against Casey Demons last weekend, taking home the chocolates by seven points (8.16.64 to 8.9.57) in an inaccurate display in front of goals.

The Hawks sit fourth on the ladder after their bye, while the Lions are inside the top ten on percentage, but crucially only one win behind the Hawks. There's a log-jam in the top ten, with the Bulldogs and Williamstown two games clear on top of the ladder of Geelong, Box Hill, Werrribee, Southport and Frankston, with the Zebras, Lions and Tigers filling the remaining spots inside the top 10. The Suns and Swans sit a half-game outside the top ten, while the Giants and North Melbourne are a game shy of the finals positions.

Accordingly, this is a traditional eight point game for both teams, and each team will be eager to emerge victorious from the game.

The Lions needed to win the hard way with the Demons dominating the first two quarters to have a 19 point lead over the Lions at the half-time break, which was actually trimmed by the Lions from the quarter-time margin of 26 points. However, as the third quarter progressed, the Lions gradually took control of the play and trailed by just five points at the final turn. Neither side could land a decisive blow, but the Lions' defence stood tall in the final quarter, restricting the Demons to a point, while the Lions kicked 1.7.13 which could have been very costly on another afternoon.

It will likely be the first time back at Box Hill City Oval for former Hawthorn-listed player Brandon Ryan, who was traded to the Lions last off-season in exchange for Jack Gunston. Ryan averages a tick over 12 touches and a goal a game as he adjusts to the requirements of his new team.

For their part, Box Hill were put to the test by the Zebras in their clash at Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead and had taken advantage of some wayward kicking for goal by the Zebras in the first quarter. The Hawks led the Zebras by 26 points at quarter time, and kept the Zebras to 2.5.17 in the second quarter while the Hawks kicked 4.2.26 to extend the margin to 35 points. However, the Zebras kept the Hawks to 1.2.8 in the third quarter and eventually found their range, kicking 3.5.23 in the third quarter to trim Box Hill's lead to 20 points at the last change. The Hawks tired in the final quarter, allowing the Zebras to take the lead when Anthony Caminiti kicked his third goal, putting the Zebras two points in front. However, a goal to Stuart Horner, in his 50th match for Box Hill, kicked his first ever goal for Box Hill late in time-on to give Box Hill the lead with only seconds to play and Box Hill held on for an important victory.

The game will be broadcast on the VFL website at www.afl.com.au while 3WBC 94.1FM will have a radio broadcast of the game.

Notice Max Hall not listed. This certainly means he is ensuring he gets picked in the MSD by avoiding any possible injury. Maybe by us.

Skill errors galore. Ward, Hustwaite and Wingard playing with a bit more class but mainly in transition and on the outside.

a lot of players just a step or two off the pace. Not taking first option and then rushing as a result. Very few coherent passages of play thus far

Even if someone makes a good switch, wins a clearance, nice mark etc, it doesn't feel like it matters right now because you're only 1-2 possessions away from it being turned over

Horrible half of footy. Just keep butchering opportunities through ordinary skill errors
