I could say the exact same thing about your mob, Gren.

I have absolutely no confidence going into the game on Sunday. I expect to lose by between 20-40 points.

One thing's for sure though, the standard of the game will be atrocious.

I suspect that Geelong will probably win this one, which would be mighterly ironic. After all it is this match more than any other recent match against Geelong that is a must-win for the Hawks. And as for the Cats, realistically they should be wanting to lose in order to get closer to the priority draft picks that a win would jeopardise.

But Geelong always seem to get the worst result from Hawthorn matches, this won't be any exception if we 'win'

I expect Schwab to be picking up his payout on Monday.

I am confident Geelong will win this game for similar reasons Jim. Geelong haven't won the important matches against Hawthorn for the best part of 20 years, and this game isn't all that important to Geelong as far as making finals is concerned. The last 2 times we've beaten Hawthorn were in 1998 and 2001, both times we were an ordinary side. Either way, the Hawks would expect to beat us easily so all the pressure is on them to perform.

Certainly not that of an oil-painting quality, most likely...
Oh I don't know about that, Aaron Lord has been selected to pretty up the match.

Looks like Lord's been left out along with Kingsley & Spriggs! Not sure where the goals are going to come from this week but hopefully a run in the 2's will sort Kingsley out.

Mooney is back to help out McCarthy and Graham up forward, so we have some tall targets to kick to finally. I would have given Spriggs a game this week, just to change the mix in the midfield a bit.

Spot on.

Our leading goalscorer in tomorrows team is Peter Riccardi with 10.

This is going to be a special game

Yeah, I'm all for getting rid of Kingsley for a week or two but this weeks forward line!?

Surely they should have bought Lord up. As much is I dislike him he likes a goal and occasionally kicks a few. Mooney if fully fit and with some form back is a good inclusion. McCarthy I'm pleased they are perservering with. Graham......can he play 2 decent games in a row?

What form would that be?

At this rate, we'll settle for "breathing". :)

The move of Gardiner to half-forward along one flank, that's the one I find odd. Maybe Thompson sees some potential in his matchup against Dixon that can be exploited. If there's anything to it at all, must be quite subtle...

Will, i see you're still struggling with the concept that the selected teams mean nothing.

The panel pick their 22 and then just throw the names in positions, merely to suit the newspapers. It isn't any reflection on what will happen on the weekend.

Jarad Rooke is named at CHB each week, has yet to even go near the position.

OK, that's fair enough. But there has to be some shadow of truth to the team listed back on the first page of this thread. Otherwise, why post them here, then?

As someone who works for a newspaper-- the Ballarat Courier, to be precise, and someone who compiles the teams for the Central Highlands Football League for publication in every Friday's edition and writes previews for the Saturday editions-- I'm well aware of what the mindsets of teams' coaches and selectors are at. But I think it's done for little more than to keep those of us in the media happy.

I applaud Thompson for dropping Kent Kingsley, it makes a statement that no one's untouchable in this time of crisis at Geelong... not even your leading goal-kicker from a year ago.

However, all I was saying was that Gardiner wouldn't be my choice along the forward line unless Thomspon saw some matchup deficiency that he could exploit. But then again, am I giving him an ounce of credit for having some tactical know-how?

I wouldn't say the 22 players named in positions means "nothing", as opposed to "something", as you point out, but maybe somewhere in between...

But FWIW, today's Geelong Addy had a slightly different alignment of the 22 players in their positions, including along the half- and full-forward lines.

Having said that, I think those posted on Page 76 of today's Addy, with all the matchups, are closer to the truth than those listed on the afl.com.au site on Thursday night.

And speaking of what's listed in the Addy, here it is...

Geelong backs vs. Hawthorn forwards:
Harley Scarlett Sanderson
Ries Thompson Vandenburg

Geelong half-backs vs. Hawthorn half-forwards:
D. Johnson Rooke Milburn
Barlow Holland Lonie

Each team's centres:
Clarke Enright Slade
Bateman Crawford Green

Geelong half-forwards vs. Hawthorn half-backs:
Gardiner Graham Chapman
Cox Rawlings Dixon

Geelong full-forwards vs. Hawthorn backs:
Ablett McCarthy Riccardi
Osborne Hay Smith

Each team's rucks:
King Corey Ling
Everitt Lekkas Tallis

Interchange:
Wojcinski Kelly Chambers Mooney
Brown Kane Harford Mitchell

There we go, from Saturday's Geelong Advertiser, Page 76. Take this with a grain of salt-- or in other words, not exactly drawn to scale. One's mileage may vary at around 2 p.m. Sunday. ;)

People want to see who has made the team, not where they've been named.

As i said earlier, the naming of teams in position is merely done to satisfy the needs of the print media.

Even on game day the clubs are only obligated to give a list of the 18 starting on the field, and the 4 on the bench. They don't give positions.

OK, then, I'll ask this: With the 22 players we know (and as far as we know) who will likely line up for the Cats, what matchups would you like to exploit against Hawthorn?

I think that was the main point of my earlier post, although it may have been lost in the translation. ;)

Leave it here... I'm on deadline for the Courier right now. :)

Assuming Jade Rawlings plays forward, we have an opportunity to exploit their weak defence.

Ben Graham needs to start at CHF, with Gardiner playing the decoy, and McCarthy in the goalsquare.

We need to have Chappy in the middle to begin with as he has the ability to intimidate weak players (Hawthorn have plenty), and we need to make sure Monica starts ON THE GROUND to provide us with some much needed run out of defence.

Glad you mentioned Chapman. I don't think he's been given enough credit this season, as he's been one of Geelong's more consistent and harder-working players.

As for what you mention here, it's no secret that Cameron Ling can achieve the same level of intimidating opponents as well.

If this is what defines the so-called "mental game", then give Geelong a huge checkmark in the column marked "psychological advantages"...

I'd also look for Ben Graham to have another big game as well. His efforts in the last few weeks have been better than those of his earlier in the season-- and I'd go as far as to say that you cannot pin the losing streak as being his fault.

I had been one of those who would have classified Ben's mantra as being, "as goes Graham, goes Geelong," but I can see that he's one of the few veterans who's lifted his game in recent weeks. And I was one who advocated dropping him back into the 2's.

Great input, by the way...

I would never say that about a Geelong side playing Hawthorn, especially when you consider our record against the Hawks in recent times.

Still, where there's life there's hope.... GO CATS!!

We'll win by over 70. I'm THAT confident.

As an aside, JubJub, where have I made excuses for this season? No where. I haven't been using youth or anything like Geelong fans have, even though we have numerous raw and inexperienced blokes in our lineup.
