Saints' best players: Webster and Byrnes in the 2nd, Pou in the 3rd, Sincs in the 4th

A few players had moments: Sharman, Owens, Phillipou, Sinclair, Stocker, Nas, McRae, but moments was all they were. No one was able to break through Carlton's pressure.

We stood around waiting for the ball to sit up or looking for the easy crumb, the players that did get it shat the bed and turned it over, we demand more bravery from our players.

Why take Higgins off?

Another Friday night marquee game at the G wasted. I hope Lyon looks at his coaching too, way too conservative.

Liked Marshall’s game. De Koning was good as well. But you would be crazy to offer him 1.6-1.7.
He’s good, but so is Marshall and two rucks never work. Neither are KPP.

De Koning especially early doors gives their midfield the clearances and then a few goal advantage, the difference in the end. Sign him up, changes our midfield.

Shocking decision to play Higgins if he was crook during the week, and was subbed out with "illness"

Collard wasted as sub, didn't get a touch, he's the kind of player that needs time to get involved in a game, we needed fresh legs around the contest, not fresh legs deep in the fwd pocket.

He's looked better as a defender but he's still average there and poor as a forward...

It's an absolutely deplorable effort. Too often under Lyon we look utterly clueless. He says this mob is coachable, well WTF is he coaching them, because when we need to put speed on the game we just go around in circles. Bomb long, rinse, lather, repeat.

Said it on the game day thread, but Lyon had an absolute stinker. How many clearances in a row do you need to lose before you throw, NAS, Sincs, Ownes in the middle? Then when they completely clog up the game, we still refuse to put speed on the game.

How many times did we try and hit up a kick in the middle and create some overlap run? Just an insanely beige performance. Lyon was pantsed tonight, by one of the dumbest coaches in the comp.

Yes, I agree Lyon was missing targets, fumbling the ball and bombing to the blues defenders.

I reckon Higgins offered more than anyone else would have. Subbing him off was a mistake, in my opinion. Won’t say who should have been subbed off, but not Higgins

Depends on what we’re trying to achieve with him. If it’s developing him, he needs to spend the season in defence because he won’t make it as a forward. If we’re just using him to plug a hole until King is back then we need to find another plug ASAP

I thought the skipper stepped up when the game need him to, has been ridden hard this years so deserves his flowers. As does Darcy Wilson. Never going to be an elite user, but he had his best game of the year tonight.

I thought he panicked a bit in the last quarter.

Can someone give me some stats around average age and average games played for the 2 teams tonight? Try and paint a picture like based on our inexperience we weee always going to lose. Just to give me some perspective and make me feel good about the loss.

From memory, our average age was something like 24.5 to their almost 26.
Their average games was over 100 - We had more players in the <50 and <100 games brackets, they had more in >100, >150 and >200.

How many times did we do what you said under Ratten? Can’t think of any…

Now We don’t have 2 mature key forwards, or a commanding key back, and going up against one of the best midfield in the comp, you think. going head to head we can beat them? Would have been killed. Still, we could have played smarter.. but that’s down to player execution (Lyon cannot be responsible for Hill fumbling, mis-kicks and turnover all night for example..)

We were a much better team when we had Ryder and Marshall playing in tandem. Even won our first final in a decade with the two of them playing together.

I continue with Keeler - Caminiti hardly offers much more. What Keeler does is allow Owens to stay in the F50 and compete. If you look at Keeler v Caminiti I know who i would be putting games into and who has the higher potential

Time to stop holding the funeral style stuff before the game. We lose these games way too often, no wonder when the pre-game stuff is such a downer.

Player X should be in the VFL next week, doesn't deserve his spot. hopefully Higgins is back next week, was great to see Philipou out there.

I agree. The body language of the opposing team vs ours was visibly different after the misery speech/steam roller. It hurts us more …much more than the opposition, the reflect on Spud like this. Spudda would be the first to agree. This is institutional/political good will rhetorical hoopla…. just look at how Carlton sprinted away after that disastrous speech pre game and we were slumped in a cuddle. Spud would NOT approve. This is nothing less than institutional goobly, goohah…I know know Spud would agree. F that. But…and of course …the usual disclaimers follow, and we know St Kilda get their little pay packet to be an obedient ‘little Melbourne minnow’ and we have to eat it. It hurts. It hurts us much, much more than the opposition because we love Spud. This sucks. It killed us. First few 50 entries were pathetic. Straight to oppo marks. I know we got a few early goals. Do t be fooled. We are at a massive disadvantage every Spud game because of this. And Spud knows it .

Edit..in the light of day, I will say, perhaps these things help others, like families, perhaps even Spuds family, so I’ll say sorry if I was offensive, please accept I was upset at the loss. I just don’t think it helped the players - our players on the day. I know they are professionals and all, but..

Agree 100% with all of the above . We won’t get another Friday night with that crap . 14 points down felt 50 points down as we refused to run or play on . Could’ve won it but who cares .

It's like the ball was lathered in soap every time one of our players tried to grab it. That and the amount of times we slipped over was embarrassing

Hammer the Back > Hammer the Forward. He’s too reactive as a forward and leading to the pockets. I thought he did great down back and mentioned a few weeks ago that we have our full back for the next decade and I still believe that.

Dougal showed glimpses of hillbilly dougs again tonight. I like him better than Cordy, but I wish he was a depth player and playing in the VFL. We don’t have enough food backs so we need to keep playing Doog until we have better players that can take his spot.

In terms of forwards, I wish King was our answer but not holding my breath.

Cooper made some good leads but was ignored. We just needed some composure to spot him up. He’s a gun. Really like Cooper’s work.

I guess I’m not bothering with the replay.

Bugger though. The only game the whole season that I really want to win.
And one of those that we needed to win off the teams around us.
