Round 12: Vs Phoenix (home): Roys Won by 81 points

Rematches of old Grand Finals can be funny things. I don’t think we’ve beaten the Swamprats since the S25 GF – but that doesn’t seem to matter much. But we have had the reverse result since beating the Phoenix a few seasons ago. Would that trend continue in Round Whateverthehellweareuptonow ???

Mobbs was a player to watch – which was either the Sim taking the piss or ……. I don’t have a second option here…… So just pretend there was one….

Mobbs lived up to his top billing by scoring a behind for the Phoenix, before our terrible two from last week, Beandip and MrsEddieBetts opened the scoring for the Roys. windyhill and Pure Grunt then split the sticks, and despite Mooch hitting everything but the target, the Roys held a 2 goal advantage courtesy of JackNah_8 goaling late.

Early on – the Roys went bang. Goals to Mooch , Beandip , _Mike_ opened the lead up, then _Mike_ and Mooch and 3KZ is Football then kept the pressure up on the frantic Phoenix.

The Phoenix made a last ditch effort to close the gap and had successfully cut it to just 2 goals – but the Roys put the foot down and really made it hurt. The last quarter was a procession, with MrsEddieBetts , Barrels , DERRINALPHIL just gut running and inflicting pain and misery on the opposition. 2 goals in 19 seconds for DERRINALPHIL a real highlight. The Roys pumped the margin out to 81 points at the final siren…..

Best: Another true team performance – 11 different goal scorers, 4 with four each, another two with 3 goals. Pure Grunt with 147 DT points was exceptional, but _Mike_ with 113 from a CHF was equally epic ! 11 marks for the big CHF this week. 3KZ is Football racked up 29 possessions and 7 tackles and Beandip and DERRINALPHIL were also prolific.

Best Newcomer Award: (the PTizzle Award)

We only had one newcomer this year, and while his posting in match threads and the team threads/PM was very entertaining – we didn’t see enough of it !! But we’ve seen enough off field to know he is a quality contributor, and his on field performances saw him nominated for All Sweet FA honours this season (and was selected in some of the sides) – so we have really high hopes for Pure Grunt for S37 onwards !!!

Round 13: Vs Royals (Away): Roys Lost by 1 point

Not only a real heartbreaker on the day, a real heartbreaker for the season – as it ultimately turned out. Missing the finals by effectively one point – you can certainly look back at this one and wonder – if we’d scored just one more behind (which is ironic really, don’t you think….. Like rain on your wedding day……. given that’s all we seemed to do all season is score behinds….)

Anyway, enough complete rambling for now….. On with the complete rambling….

The Roys started off scoring multiple behinds (FFS…….) before DERRINALPHIL and Mooch goaled to take us out to a 15 point lead early on, but the game was starting to settle down. The teams traded goals and behinds, which made some players look a little odd and the surgery all seemed to go fairly well – but did delay play slightly…. Scores were level at the half time break.

The Royals started the second half brighter, taking a close to 2 goal lead early on – but Pure Grunt and 3KZ is Football kept us close enough if we were good enough. windyhill kept it close early in the last, but the margin was still 2 goals and time was running out…. elmer judd took us within a goal, and then the Royals scored to extend the lead to 11 points. With 4 minutes of play remaining, up stepped Pure Grunt again – nerves of steel from the first year gun !!! Then Zevon brought us close and windyhill reduced the margin to one point with only 17 seconds remaining……..

Then disaster……. Some idiot blew the siren…….

Best: windyhill and Zevon led the way today, with the usual suspects of _Mike_ , DERRINALPHIL and Pure Grunt assisting.

On field, the award goes to windyhill – who has turned from a reliable defender who would occasionally pop forward to slot a goal – then taunt and laugh at his opponent on the way back to the defensive end – to a key part of the Roys forward setup – with a career high 14 goals for the season….

Off field, the award is shared by two returning Roys - MrsEddieBetts and SpecialBruce – who have returned to great effect following extensive stints around the league and in the wilderness. The club is much better off with their involvement and humour in our match threads and team chat !!

Round 14: Vs Swamprats (home): Roys Lost by 8 points

Pure Grunt and Barrels started us off well - Pure Grunt slotting a long range barrel and Barrels slotting a short range pure grunt – or something. Barrels and JackNah_8 then goaled, although we were still troubled defensively this season – conceding goals far too easily. Mooch and Zevon then rounded out the quarter. Three – note THREE more of those needed……

In true Roys tradition, this instruction was ignored by all but Beandip – and so we went into HT trailing after a fairly sizeable turnaround.

Mooch started the second half well, with two goals to reduce the margin, and then DERRINALPHIL and Pure Grunt did the same, cutting the lead back to just 4 points before a late Swamprats goal extended it to 10. Barrels then opened the scoring in the last and we had the close one at Renown Park. Several points and the occasional goal later and it was just 2 points the difference, but there was still 10 minutes of chaos left….

Despite a valiant series of attempts, largely reminiscent of the 97 preliminary final – where the Dogs did absolutely everything possible to butcher a lead, including running into each other and preventing goals – the Roys were unable to hold on and lost by 8.

Best: Phar Ace and Pure Grunt were outstanding. Zevon and Ed_Gein hit the opposition hard all day, Mooch and Barrels led the goal kicking….. But it wasn’t enough and another season was slipping away….
