Rule Changes?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

The change would be we get rid of stalwarts and use that criteria for veterans. First two veterans would be free, third would cost the same as what is currently a first stalwart, and fourth would cost the same as a second stalwart.

If this is what the AFL is doing, then I'm all for this too!

Voting time - all coaches please vote. I'll use this as the reconfirmation thread too. Where there are multiple options, please post your full preference list.

Rule 1 - PSD/Rookie draft timing
D: Two sets of each draft. If you pass and keep a clear spot in the December drafts you get a replacement pick in the March drafts

Rule 2 - amnesty for new coaches
E: One player's contract can be torn up whenever a new coach takes over

Rule 3 - one off amnesty
All players can tear up one of their player's contracts during this off season.

Agree this could be a good addition

Rule 4 - limit contracts of 30+ year olds to 2 years

Not fussed with this as many will only do this anyway but don't see what it adds because don't think anyone's going to offer them more than say three years anyway.

Rule 5 - 75% delistment rule
I: Limit 75% rule to one player per club per season

Don't really know what one I want for this rule, but if I had to pick, I'll go with that

Rule 6 - force delisting and immediate payout of players not on AFL lists

Don't agree with this because it could potentially wreck lists if predecessor has heaps of them for a new coach

Rule 7 - introduction of academy lists

Yep love this rule, definitely!

Rule 8 - creation of academy lists
L: Draft

Only fair way otherwise shit teams = shit players

Rule 9 - promotion of academy players
O: Free promotion on minimum contract

Reward players for picking the diamonds in the rough

Rule 10 - abolishment of veterans list

I like the current rule we have.

Rule 11 - veteran/stalwart criteria
Part 1 - do we make the veterans/stalwarts eligibility criteria the same, with the first two free and the next two on the fixed salaries?
Part 2 - how many years do we want in that criteria - 5 (current rule)

This. We trade more than the real AFL so it's only sensible to keep it as the same.

Rule 1 - PSD/Rookie draft timing
A: No change, both drafts straight after the ND

Rule 2 - amnesty for new coaches
G: No amnesty, you live with your predecessor's mistakes

Rule 3 - one off amnesty
Would rather not. Have some continuity to the contracts that have been offered over the previous off-seasons. I've made some bad contract calls too, but you live with it and try to make other moves.

Rule 4 - limit contracts of 30+ year olds to 2 years
No limit. Coach's discretion to offer what they want. If someone wants to offer a 31 year old a 4 year deal, they go for it and live with whatever consequences.

Rule 5 - 75% delistment rule
K: Leave rule as is

Rule 6 - force delisting and immediate payout of players not on AFL lists
I'm okay with this.

Rule 7 - introduction of academy lists
I'm okay with this if it comes with $0 to the TPP. If it adds to the TPP then I vote no.

Rule 8 - creation of academy lists
L: Draft

Rule 9 - promotion of academy players
O: Free promotion on minimum contract

Rule 10 - abolishment of veterans list
Follow AFL.

Rule 11 - veteran/stalwart criteria
Part 1 - Okay to the proposal
Part 2 - 6 years

Rule 1 - PSD/Rookie draft timing
A: No change, both drafts straight after the ND

(Happy where it is)

Rule 2 - amnesty for new coaches
E: One player's contract can be torn up whenever a new coach takes over

(Don't like F, thats almost an out for your own stupid mistakes)

Rule 3 - one off amnesty
No thanks

Rule 4 - limit contracts of 30+ year olds to 2 years
Unsure here. Maybe after 32

Rule 5 - 75% delistment rule
Leave it

Rule 6 - force delisting and immediate payout of players not on AFL lists
After the AFL rookie draft, all players not on AFL lists must be paid out immediately and in full. Firesales if that puts you over the cap, and to make that work it would mean mandating that all clubs leaving room for a certain number of rookie picks (this money could be spent instead on taking experienced players in the ND/PSD). This is only for coaches who offered the contract and are still in charge. The idea of this is to a) discourage stupid contracts, b) reduce the number of unused AFL players, and c) keep lists more competitive so teams at least have 38 players who have a chance of being picked every week

(Re: Bold type. New coaches get clean slate with these players? If so, yeah, all for it)

Rule 7 - introduction of academy lists
Any AFL-listed players undrafted after our final rookie pick is taken go onto an academy list. Players on this list cannot play during the season, but will be tied to that club in the next offseason, where they can be either promoted or delisted and returned to the draft pool.

(Prefer them stay available to all, makes the next years draft more interesting seeing where people will select players who came from the clouds to star the year before)

Rule 8 - creation of academy lists
L: Draft

(If anything, draft)

Rule 9 - promotion of academy players
Q: Promotion as per father/son players - contract is pre-determined, takes a draft pick to get them, each opponents can have one shot at getting them, you only have to get within one round of the bid to get them.

Rule 10 - abolishment of veterans list
AFL have now abolished the 'list' for the veterans, so instead of it being a choice between veterans and rookies, it's now between veterans and senior-listed players. Do we follow that? (Yes)

Rule 11 - veteran/stalwart criteria
AFL have now removed the age criteria from the veterans list, which makes it basically now the same as our stalwarts (as 10 years experience = 28 years old for a bottom-age draftee). We've also now been running for 9 years so we're at the point where we can start to consider following the AFL rule length of service rule, or getting closer to it.

So,
Part 1 - do we make the veterans/stalwarts eligibility criteria the same, with the first two free and the next two on the fixed salaries? (Yes)
Part 2 - how many years do we want in that criteria - 5 (current rule), 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 (AFL rule)? (As is years on AFLTM lists? I'd like 10, but that may take a hell of a lot of backtracking...)

You could do it in the same way that we apply for delistments? Ie. in the list thread write 'apply for Tom Rockliff to be re-classified as a midfielder/small forward' and then Russian accepts or declines.

I like the positional idea here loopy. I used to run a league a few years ago where I would create positions at the start of the year, and there would be countless debates regarding these positions. We would then vote in the league upon where they play. I would be in favour of seeing each team list the positions of their players and for all other managers to pick apart and call for possible challenges to positioning wherever they see fit. If a team runs out of players in a certain position, I would prefer in the weekly thread a post along the lines of 'Permission to play Matthew Pavlich at CHB' so that this only applies for the one week

Regarding Stalwarts/ Veterans, whats the go with their contracts? Are they a year-to-year proposition? I've got Aaron Davey as a Stalwart currently and he is listed in the team list as 200 (3), but he is taking either 214 or 344 of cap space, so just weighing up my options

Both amnesties will come in, and the veterans rule has been changed (check the rules thread). The rest of the rules stay the same.

Open to discussion on the selection issue, but my concern with nominating positions is that we only have 72 players per week playing AFL footy who aren't in the TM 18s, it's almost impossible to have cover in each position when a team only has, on average, 4 reserves playing AFL footy.

Once you're a veteran/stalwart you stay a veteran/stalwart. After the rule change you now have Ablett, Corey, Davey and Guerra as veterans. Ablett and Davey have to stay there unless you can make a trade, Corey and Guerra have to stay there unless you trade or delist them.

Each team usually has three or four backs and forwards who can actually play tall though. For example from Essendon's team this year:

Marking Forwards: Crameri, Ryder, Hurley, Monfries. Then you've got Winderlich who has played as a marking forward (and would have been best 22 if not injured) and Bellchambers and Hille as ruckman who also play that forward role.
Key Backs: Fletcher, Carlisle, Hooker. Then Pears as a reserves, Myers has played CHB, Ryder has played CHB. Then you could make arguments that Hibberd and Hardingham could be played as a tall if stocks are really thin.

That's a lot of options considering we only need 2 talls up forward and down back.
