All of this discussion about fringe players and clearing three spots for the ND makes one thing absolutely clear to me: I DO NOT WANT Dylan Roberton.

We'd be better just handing a player over and taking the chance in the draft or adding Curnow to the senior list.
No offence Dylan.

Thats interesting, because the word i received this afternoon that was 4 clubs were genuinley interested in Paul Bower, but none had genuinley asked about Setanta. Club confident that a suitable will come up for Bower, probably on Sunday or Monday.

The interest is there, but as far as i am aware what they have put on the table has been laughed off. Unless they up the ante, he will stay a Blue. Again we are being more inflexible on Bower than what we are for Carlos.

We have restricted salary cap space - which is why we are quiet.

Restricted space in the cap may be confirmed if Brock is still on the list next year.

Why else would we keep a guy on our list who we don't plan to play? The most plausible explanation is that there's not 400K wriggle room in this years salary cap.

It's the trade that continues to hurt.

One first rounder lost
No spare cash
Having to move on players like Bower / Setanta who could play a role (and keep a guy who won't)

Aaaarrrrrrrggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

At this stage it looks like he will stay.

Of the 2 Carlos is more than likely to be traded, perhaps for a 3rd/4th rounder.

what would be the point of that. A 3rd or 4th round pick will only be used on a rookie upgrade or on Buckley.
should be going for a 2nd round upgrade if anything

See this is what happens when we overrate our players.

Setanta is worth nothing more than a 4th round pick. 27 years old. Injury prone.

Yeah cos we all know we shoulda just developed Bowser or Irish to play an in and under role.

And now Brock is keeping Bows and Irish out of the team its no wonder they have both asked for a trade.......hey wait a min?

Yep you know wots goin on dontcha.

McLean's situation is hurting us, make no mistake. We may not like it, but that's a lot of money tied up right there.

This will be unpopular, but did we make a mistake in re-signing all three of Joseph, Ellard and Armfield?

I'd say they wouldn't be on large coin so would have little effect on our cap. .. By the time we need cap room hopefully we've released room with front ended contracts and delistments/retirements. .. Its the reason we should continue to rotate the list, topping up doesn't work on so many levels. ..

Salary caps and list numbers are limited ... dontcha know that or still learning the caper?

Austin is chopped anyway.
At an absolute minimum we need to trade out one more player, or chop one.

The Age reported it, but no confirmation from the club. Despite age, Setanta gives us more than Austin.

1) Austin's gone. Everyone knows it.
2) Most certainly Setants offers more. But he wants out (for more game time, which is fair enough). If we knock back a trade, we need to chop another player (at a minimum).

Where would Setanta be guaranteed more game time?

This is what baffles me.

Surely if GWS/GC were interested they would have him already given what they can offer. If we exclude those two clubs then which teams want a depth player who is coming into his last 2-3 years.

A player that is not poor but is not that great. Setanta despite being a KPP, is just not worth the trouble for another club. Setanta in the grand meaning of AFL things is just another invisible player.

Top quality doesn't mean they are some of the best in competition, it means they are excellent in carrying out their required duties.

Honestly...

Maybe, but id rather keep Setanta than get a 4th round pick in this draft.

Duigan was a 4th round selection last year. Do we keep Setanta on for limited opportunities or fill a need with a late pick?

If a deal can be done for Setanta, in his interest, do it. I just can't see a spot in our best 22 as a forward behind Waite, a resting ruck and swingman-Thornton. (Henderson a possibility too if we unearth another tall defender)

Hampson, Mitchell, Levi, Setanta, McCarthy, Watson - All 195cm+ and lining up for the Bullants round 1, 2012? Something's gotta give...

So they are role players?

Your term is misleading if you meant the above. Top quality implies firstly supremacy when neither Armfield or Ellard are the best at what they do either on our list or in the competition. Secondly it suggests they are of a deep value to the side, which they aren't. They are role players. Good ones, flexible, hard-working and dedicated, but role players.

They are expendable and you know it. They should of been on the table to give us more flexibility IMO. It is inconsequential of course, there really isn't anything worth chasing right now, but I believe we should of left it open

I think I'm going to be sick.

Both are incredibly valuable for the team, especially Ellard, who is as hard as they come. Being a superstar player doesn't always require you to rack up 30 disposals and 4 goals each week. While neither are disposal-gethering superstars, they do what they need to do in order to help the team win.

Sounds like Terry Wallace's list management skills are superior to yours, to be honest. :o
