Good teams have them ....a player who provides the drive and dash off half back to set up forward moves. Sydney with Malceski and Kennelly, Geelong have Wojinski, Port Adelaide and Peter Bourgoyne, Adelaide have McLoed... the list goes on.

Who is or will be or should be ours?

Arise sir Daniel Bell. Green could be very good at if he didn't always look sideways. Maybe that Johnson has been kept he could fit into this role.

Cmon...We had Ward

We used to have Yze before he became well, Yze 2.0...

Most players can do it, but we need the players to develop accountability. Wojinski is good, but sometimes he farqs up by running before he kicks...

Good thread!

It is definitely an area of concern. I think defensively we have had to make ends meet for so long (with a lack of kpp) that the club hasn't really bothered too much about defensive tactics. Under Bailey this like the whole team gameplan I suppose will need to be developed. Once you have a plan in place then you can go look for the right players to carry it out.

But to answer your question I am not really sure who will put their hand up and be the man.

According to Bailey TJ would have played that role after his stellar performance V Carlton last year. Ah well, it's ancient history now.:(

Petterd showed a willingness to take people on and run the lines, I hope he can really develop into our runner off half back.

Like most really good half backs, I hope to see Ricky in the midfield. The kid has so much class and polish I get the feeling it's wasted out of defence

yeah Baily said that TJ would of been playin across half back which would have been awesome but that has gone out the window now. mayb brad green can stay at half back, yze or daniel bell

Bell would make a good runner but I really see him as more of a stopping defender and I'd rather have him accountable than running off his man all the time and getting caught out on the rebound. Petterd looks like he could be superb in that role but I too want to see him in the midfield. Bartram will probably be a tagger. Bode and CJ could both be looked at.

I think Chris Johnson has potential as a runner off HB. Granted he has flaws when its comes to getting the pill himself, but he has all the attributes to develop into a player that can receive and break the lines; pace, good engine and good foot skills.

ohhh yeah forgot bout whealan. when fit the carves across half back. if he can stay fit for the entire season he could play that role really well for us

yes he, like Bell, could play that role well but they are our conventional backmen who man up and stop the opposition forwards. Chris Johnson will probably get the role if not then Brad Green.

I don't think we need any particular playing to be the designated runner, we have to encourage all our backs to do it. Geelong have the pace of Wojinski and Scarlett's ability to carry the footy and they also added the run of Mackie to their back half but all their other backs like Harley, Milburn and Egan run the ball as well. Bell, Whelan and Rivers (the first 3 selected backmen) are great stoppers and give solid run but should be encourage to do more, Frawley has a natural ability to back himself and Bartram does as well. Wheatley and Chris Johnson are both good kicks of the footy but first have to find themselves a place in the side. Carroll is useless as is Holland, but Ferg tries more. I'll still be pushing for Lynden Dunn to play in the backline, who is good at running the ball.

yes i agree with that. I think Johnson will find it easier than Wheatley as Johnson has youth on his side but if you ask me Wheatley is just about finished.
Carroll is useless as is Holland.
You got that right... it kills me when guys Matty Scarlett runs up the ground and delivers to the forwards with precision. Chopper's kicks go higher than they do long and he should look for an NFL punting position coz he gets alot of hang time leaving our blokes sitting under the ball.

I think if we can get Bell, Rivers, Whelan and possibly even Bartram fit in defence we'll have plenty of rebound.
Belly is accountable but also very quick and one of the best kicks in the team, Rivers chops off anything in the air that goes near him and Whelan is also like Bell in the way he runs and carries upfield.
Man when I look back we missed Rivers so much this year.

Wheatley "just about finished"?

Wash your mouth out. Wheatley is the best long kick in the side, pretty quick for his size and capable of some terrific football.

i agree with flashh here wheatley is just about finished, not that i think he ever really got started............some of the most appauling defensive skills i ve seen, always beaten one on one.........need to play him on a wing if he plays at all.

Im suprised no one has mentioned davey filling this role for us, as u know he struggled this year a bit in the foward line. In the past when he has played on the ball or in the backline for a quater he looks awesome and makes us very dangerous running out. Saw a game down at geelong in 2005 when robbo kicked 8 goals and flash went back in the 3rd quater and got us back into that game, he was sensational..........we were down by 36 pts and all of sudden when he went back he changed the game for us.
Can anyone else remember that game?
Not saying he should be a full time backman but if he is struggling we have that option of playing him there
