Sean Rusling has declared himself ahead of schedule in his recovery from shoulder surgery.

The talented 21-year-old, who has been plagued by injury since debuting in 2005, dislocated his shoulder in round one against Fremantle and underwent a subsequent reconstruction.

While a return to the playing field won’t happen until next year, Rusling said on Magpie Radio’s weekly player show The Squawk this week that he’s progressing well and believes he is only a few weeks away from training with the team.

“We will still be taking it pretty slowly so I won’t be playing this year, but I should join the boys at training in three weeks time,” he said.

“Then (I will) head to the break and head into the preseason as normal.”

One particularly encouraging sign for Rusling is the amount of movement and strength he already has in the shoulder, 13 weeks after surgery.

“I have more range (in my shoulder) then I thought I would have.

“Everything has healed really well and we are a bit ahead of where I thought I would be.”

Rusling, who has played 17 league matches, was particularly impressive towards the end of 2007 when he played five of the last six matches, including all three finals, and booted 10 goals.

He suffered a broken collarbone late in his debut season when he played five games, and then a pre-season shoulder injury again curtailed his progress in 2006 before some promising performances late in the season.

Few gave him hope of returning to the senior side in 2007 after a pre-season shoulder reconstruction, but he miraculously made it back, and not only that he made a significant impact.

Bit of a fluff piece after a few bad games but it did the trick and cheered me up. I must admit I was worried about whether Rus would have the ticker to get back up again after his shoulder went but he sounds like he is as determined as ever

Will be in the side come rnd 1 next year, a fully fit and flying rus.

Well thats made me happy for the day lol

Yep thrilled with that. I am seriously looking foward to seeing one of our young key fowards being allowed to play the third foward role alongside Rocca and Clokey and hopefully find their feet at the level. It will make our tranisition from Rocca Tarrant Cloke, To Rocca Cloke ???? to Cloke ?????? ????? so much easier. Rather then having two players trying to hold down a foward line whilst trying to get comfortable to the level. It will allow the next link in the chain to come in alongside a very established foward (Cloke will be by that stage, if he isn't considered that already)and one with a season under their belt

I know someone who works with Hawthorn who was at Collingwood's training this week.

I can tell you he said that Rusling hasn't lost any pace or athletisism and he looks eager and very enthusiastic. He was running and doing sprints, along with Presti.

He also said Dick was kicking the ball around, which is good news.

Article makes me think that MAYBE if he had surgery straight away instead of going on holidays, he might've been a chance for finals again.

His injury in Round 1 was a new one, so his coming back in the finals last year had no barring on it. Possibly more than useful for us at FF come finals time in '08. Even more-so then Rocca.

Very encouraging news.

Jerry, pity that you have given up on Rus particularly as he IS a part of our future plans.

He is the only young key forward who has shown some real promise and is ahead of Reid and Dawes (Cloke not included).

Im a realist

the guy has been basically injured 4 out 4 seasons.Sad but true

Hope he comes out next year and plays every game but im not holding my breath

Fluff piece, appropriately timed to come out after two losses and a bit of media controversy.

Good news nonetheless, and I must say jerry springer is probably pretty close to the truth. We ought to treat anything we get out of Rus as a bonus from here on in.

Fave's, this video just has this sense of warmth and hope about it.

We can only hope Rus becomes what we all want him to be.

Fast becoming my favourite player and he hasn't even had a real sustained crack at it yet.

Nah the best for him would of been to get away and escape the disappointment of it all like he did. Nothing worse than reinjuring your shoulder when you have done everything right, only for something bullshit to pop it out again.

Its more mental than physical for him now. His shoulders are rebuilt, but how he goes about it regarding his attitude will determine how he goes next season.

By the way, i think he will slot 45+:D

Here is Dennis Commeti saying Rusling is like Phil Carman:

I didnt notice Johnny Wardrop there. Was he hiding?

i was real disappointed when he went down in rd1.
i really felt that with the full preseason under his belt he was going to dominate this year.not to be i guess.

but he does have talent.blistering pace, good shot at goal.needs to work on his ground level work.but im sure when he feels comfortable with his shoulders he will be able to put his head down with confidence.

I too had a shoulder reco and as a earlier poster said, alot of ur recovery comes down to your mental side.I did find it hard to put my body into a contest when i didn feel right about the shoulder. If you feel confident in your shoulder then u wont feel the need to protect it all the time.
As i found, taping does squat, your shoulder will pop out nonetheless

I always laugh at all the players that have their shoulders taped up these days. It is purely "mental" because there is no benefit from taping such a major joint as the shoulder. It does nothing at all.
