I know there's another thread re Bailey, but thought this deserved its own one.

Robertson said he fully expected Dean Bailey to succeed as coach of a young Melbourne team this year.
But in the event of a failed campaign, Robertson said the club would be silly not to sound out one of the AFL's best coaches about joining the Demons.

I wholeheartedly agree. If we take some good strides this season, then we keep Bailey for sure. If we don't then we'd be very very silly if we didn't chase a coach like MM.

I was saying this early last season that we should be sounding Malthouse out for 2012.

However, I doubt we will be in a position to pay his large salary he has become used to. Not only would we be forking out (I'm guessing), close to $1,000,000 for his services per year, i'm sure we couldn't afford his assisstants. He has always surrounded himself with great coaches, and I'm sure he would want the same at a new club.

It's a good idea in theory, however i feel a few other clubs would be in line before us if they have poor seasons ie; Carlton, Adelaide, Hawthorn and Brisbane. And all these clubs could afford to pay him more than what we could I'm sure.

Seriously? When was the last time we had a premiership coach? I would like to see us try a proven premiership winner next time around. We've been messing around with untried or unproven coaches for too long. We need to spend money to make money in this regard. A great coach will do wonders with our current list.

btw, Warriors, when are you going to change your team to Melbourne, instead of Collingwood?

Too right. Malthouse is only Collingwood for so long as he is paid by them. Business, not personal.

I'd take him in a second if the team could afford it.

Not a Malthouse fan myself, yes has can coach but I just don't like him.

Before I will talk about a new coach we need to let the season start & if we are 2-8 then the talk can start.

Does anyone think Robo might have a case of sour grapes because DB ended his career?

No. Robbo said he thinks the team will go well this year and if so keep Bailey on by all means. He just said it would be silly to not at least enquier about Malthouse if the season went to shit..

Spot on. When I saw the headline I thought sour grapes as well, but it's just a sensationalist headline and common sense from Robbo.

Thats good, haven't had a chance to read the article yet & was hoping that wasn't going to be the case.

I don't like him that much either, but why do I need to like a coach? Maybe that's part of the problem - we've had too many nice guys as coaches. Players need to be a little bit intimidated by their coach if they are on the wrong track. By all accounts, Malthouse is a great developer of young talent. He is apparently quite different behind closed doors than he is in the media. I think he just can't control his frustration with stupid media questions.

Mick is a put off.

Listening to him on "on the couch".

when i coach, I coach HARD.

gives the impression that being a coach makes you an intellectual superior.

Would be a pain in the arse to get to the club. He would be demanding as to what he wants around him.

Everyone is quick to say get Malthouse, but he built a team up over 10 years, sure he is a great coach, but before last year everyone was pointing the finger saying he hadn't done anything since 1994.

I don't think he would go anywhere, but say he did, he would still have to build a team up, it took 10 years at Collingwood before they were the best team of the year, I don't see Melbourne being the best team of the year for at least 3 years and that means players after the Greens and Davey's have gone. Melbourne problem is each year they are losing a seasoned player who has been giving good service, so not only do you have to develop the young, you need to replace the stars of yesteryear, what they need to is get a star from another team in who's near his peak to add that extra class to take them to another level.

My only fear with getting Malthouse would be that he might be burned out from coaching. If he was really fired up to do it, he would be worth taking. Not that I think it will happen, but it worries me that Melbourne has a history with being too patient and not demanding enough on its coaching appointees. I like Dean Bailey as a bloke, but I am almost certain that he doesn't have the killer instinct to develop a winning culture. I also haven't seen any evidence of really smart tactical coaching on match day.

Robbo loves the club and is a regular at MFC games. He wants the best for the team. If Bailey under performs it makes perfect sense to go out to look for a more capable replacement.

In all honesty, I don't think Malthouse would ever come to Melbourne.

Why not?.. humour us.

- Money...I am sure Collingwood would still pay him more than MFC would for a coaching role. Plus all the assistants he will want will add considerably to the pay roll.
- Offers from other clubs that he believes are closer to flag
- May decide to retire from coaching if Collingwood win back-to-back flags so he can go out on top

The money part is a fair point, although I think we can afford a decent spend if the coach is right.

Otherwise I would have thought Melbourne would be a pretty attractive option to most coaches at the moment - some would even take a pay cut to coach a side on the up.. it could prolong a career.
