I would argue ‘smarta@#$ is a coloquial term used by many on this forum.

Or would you prefer ‘smartypants’?

Once again your failed attempt to take the high ground has left you preaching from atop a pile of camel poop. 😆

I would say it can be quite positive in usage more times than not.

On another note, I can't believe bedford of all people loved this when you used what is, in modern times, an American term, Poop. Out of all the Americanisms this is one that is like scratching fingers on a chalkboard to me.
Unless of course Bedders was using it back in the day from it's original founding in the mid 18th century.

I have only renewed my W membership so far this season. I'm flirting with the idea of just buying tickets ad hoc for the season and seeing how it goes.

I know this’ll upset some - but I find the women’s AFL unwatchable.

Crowds have plummeted so I suspect I’m not alone.

The AFL has a challenge on its hands, because the women’s AFL is floundering. In part because of the ridiculous time of year it’s played, but in part because of the quality of the product itself.

I tend to agree and am involved in local sport all year and no one wants to watch it , they try and say no more . I love watching the girls team at my club , less stress and no one is judging them
But we are not allowed to say what you have
I watch the Swans girls and that's it

That's interesting because it's exactly my situation. I love watching the girls play for our local club and I travel to do so. I also enjoy watching the Swans AFLW, but i don't watch any other AFLW games. I just can't get invested for some reason.

I find it very much depends on the teams playing, as it does with AFL.

The quality is something that’ll improve with time, as it has done already.

The AFL’s scheduling is a joke - they’re so hung up on keeping the playing field pristine - and raking in the $$$$ - AFLW should be played b4 the men’s game - for a VERY moderate increase in GA ticket pricing.

I know they see it as a stand alone product - maybe they are prepared to carry it along with The Suns, Giants and Port - BUT:

- with Foxtel already muttering about ‘limited scope for increased viewership’, the AFL may find the Gravy Train has run out of steam and is rolling back down the hill.

(And lets face it, the Commission is hardly made up of Kerry Packer types)

Is that any different to the mens game. I dont get invested in any other games bar Swans games in the mens comp. Occasionally ill watch a game not involving us and I will switch off if its no good. I dont switch off on a Swans game ever even when we're unlikely to win or play poorly.
To Bedford surely you dont watch your beloved St Scum and GWR and probably a few others. And also the quality of some mens teams is awful consistently and we all make fun of them regularly.
So what are we actually saying here thats any different. I dont understand what point is ground breaking here.
Ps i do watch a few other aflw games because im interested in seeing to see the quality of 2024 crop of draftees and im excited for the quality coming through. Im interested in seeing the progress and seeing some of the better teams and the quality, game sense and effort thats put in. I enjoy seeing that if only for the clear real time improvement and the opportunities its providing to our female athletes who want to play this game at this level. Thats exciting to me i enjoy watching for that reason also. That reason doesnt exist for me in watching the mens game where the opportunity has been there from day 1

You are right. Once I posted i then realised I don't really watch other men's games as well. I used to watch a number of them each weekend, so I wonder if the game has changed or i have?

Saturation. Poor commentary. Many reasons. I'm the same. Watch Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights if nothing else on but often while doing something else at the same time. Men's and women's the same.
As a foundation member I believe strongly in the validity of the women's game for the long term health of Aussie Rules by attracting kids. It also gives me another outlet to barrack for the Swans. The games themselves have been improving but to expect something like the men's would be naive.
Enjoy it for itself or ignore it but don't bag it out.

I just don’t agree that the games have been improving.

In fact, with the introduction of new teams & dilution of talent, I’d even venture to say it’s gone backwards.

I don’t want the AFLW to struggle. I honestly don’t.

But crowds are way down (which is simply a fact), games are being played at an absurd time of year & I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say the AFLW is struggling.

Women’s cricket is doing very well, because the skill and quality of the games is high, it’s played at the “right” time of year & and it attracts crowds & TV audiences.
It took time - so I hope the AFLW follows suit eventually.

I think some teams have shown clear progress - inc. the Swans, Melbourne & Carlton

(Ladder pos may not coincide with game style improvement)

A couple have slipped - Freo, Richmond

I agree others are not up to standard. GWS & Suns are iobvious ones.

So, if you finish seventh, say 3 or 4 games in front of 10th, and you have an off day or kick for goal poorly, it's see you later and the 10th team moves on? How dirty would you be? Bit farcical. Or have I got it wrong?
That's just as bad as a side finishing 7th and being gifted a premiership, isn't it?

I really want it to succeed as well, however AT THE MOMENT most games are very fumbly. Except North Melbourne, which shows where the standard is getting to.
I want it to succeed because girls need heroes too.
When I was growing up I had heroes I tried to emulate.
Dennis Lillee I tried to bowl like him.
Steve Highway I was fast like him and I watched him play.
Girls need heroes too. I like the fact that there is a progression for women to be paid fulltime in sport.

I'll watch what i want , if it's on say if im out at friends , or at a pub i'll watch it with no real passion.
If St Scum or GWR are on i'll watch hoping they will get done
Women's cricket apart from the pace of the bowlers is outstanding , but each to our own

Unlike you and a couple others who have said much the same, I watch around 7 AFL games each week. It would be more if I didn't play golf on Saturday afternoon. By comparison, I watch very few AFLW matches as I find the quality is just terrible. And that's allowing for the fact that the quality is significantly better now than what it was at the start. Originally, it was like watching a game of under 12s with 15 players around the ball all at the same time. I find that most clubs, including ours, have probably no more than 6 players who know truly how to play AFL footy. Most are more than happy to simply get the ball and kick it forward without even looking at where they are kicking it to. If it goes straight to the opposition, so be it.

I find AFLW too slow. I will watch Aussie women's hockey, soccer and cricket because they are competitive and world class.
I agree with Bedford that the thing I don't like is how slow the fast bowlers are in cricket. But that's OK.

The AFLW GF best on ground votes were all done by females , no males , but the Norm Smith had 2 females ?
The women's cricket commentators are all female , no males , but in the men's games there are females ?
This is not a knock on them , as i love Kath Loughnan and Isa Guha , Sarah Jones etc and certainly not Kelli Underwood

Isa Guha is compelling watching. She is the genuine article. Knows her cricket and is funny, knowledgable and likeable.

Political parties are going the same way. Most probably have more female MPs than male these days. This is because 20 years ago there were so few females and it was said that we need more but it has now gone too far.

And just like that the thread finds its inevitable impetus. Seriously we could all see where you guys were taking this. It doesnt take Einstein to work it out.
You guys are serious dinosaurs

I enjoy watching AFLW as much as AFL and, in some ways, more so. True, the skill and fitness levels are nowhere near as high as in the men's. But what I really care about is backing my team and there being a genuine contest where we put in effort and compete. I certainly prefer a skilful game than low-scoring rolling maul all game long but what makes me enjoy the footy is the connection I feel with my team and our players.

That is the reason I front up to training etc. - because I like to feel some connection. And that is also the reason that I say that in some ways I prefer W. The team and staff are more accessible, the vibe at games is great and it just feels like a really enjoyable community feel - not a corporate entertainment industry staged to maximise eyeballs and dollars extracted. In the past couple of seasons I have really felt that the men's program at the Swans has drifted a little way from us fans and it has been a huge contrast with the women.

I was very impatient for us to get a W team and, until we did, I basically watched no W games and struggled to have any interest. Since we got our team I have watched it much the same way as men's - I watch all our games, I get to about the same number games per year in person (despite the significantly shorter season) and I don't watch that many games where we're not playing. That's a window on one fan's experience (mine) and I guess the point is it can be rewarding and has been for me.

Some points worth bearing in mind:

* W not only has improved rapidly but it is continuing to improve. The draftees that came in last year were the best ever and some of the players drafted were near the best in the competition (our own Zippy Fish among them). As that happens each season the standards are fast rising everywhere.

* There is a pretty big gap between the best and worst teams (much more than in the men's competition) - so certainly watching the off-broadway games is not very appealing, especially if we're not involved.

* the grounds the players play on contributes to the standard. A lot of W footy is played on inferior suburban ovals which have a lot of exposure to wind and rain with variable surfaces. This is a large contrast to the closed and semi-closed stadiums with pristine turf that most men's footy is played. (VFL footy suffers as a spectacle for the same reason.)

* If you ask the W coaches they say the W game when played at the highest level is a skilful and enjoyable spectacle. Craig Starcevich and Darren Crocker said as much in their post-GF interviews. I agree. Even though the game wasn't close you could see that in the Grand Final, which showcased a high standard of footy. Eilish Sheerin's outstanding game, the speed with which Jas Garner gets the ball on her boot and clears it, the passion of Belle Dawes and others, were all entertaining and enjoyable to watch for me.
