Just reading the statement on Ryan Cook on the Magpies website.

I know he won the VFL best and fairest last year but why is he still on our list. Not only for the Pies but for his own career he would have been better off going into the draft and probably end up at GC or another club. He is so far down the pecking order that the only way he could get a game in the seniors would mean alot of injuries to our players. He has not shown anything in the seniors to be kept on the list for 5 years. I think even Sinclair would be on top of him now in regards to senior selection after showing a bit in the pre season.

Reading other peoples thoughts on the bottom 5 of our list most people have pretty much the same opinion. I rated both him and Stanley at the same level, we got rid of Stanley and he ended up at the GC to give himself a real crack in 2011 for playing senior footy. We should have done the same thing with Cook.

Does anyone know why this guy who has been on our list since 2006 and is being overtaken by newer recruits eg Beams Sidebottom Sinclair (Ball & Buckley) is still on our list?

I am still coming to terms with the fact that we pay him $1500 a week to turn the ball over in the seniors.

Signed a 2 year deal at the end of 2008 AFAIK, got into the side after the Shaw/Didak fiasco in round 19 and played the rest of the season, including finals.
99.9999% sure he will not be a Pie in 2011.

Not sure it is that hard to work out really.

Our last pick in the draft was in the 80's

The Club decided Cook was better than anyone after our last pick or any rookie that might be available.
And I think you probably have to agree with them.

In coming drafts that might not apply

I think that's incorrect though, pretty certain it was due to his contractual status at the time..

No, we pay him less then that a week to be the VFL captain, that's about it.

Unless we get an absolute horror run with injuries he has played his last senior game, that I am almost sure of.

We kept him fro 2 reasons;

1. He showed a fair bit at the end of 2008, and as mentioned was signed for 2 years then.

2. He won the VFL best and fairest, and well, look at point 1, it would have cost us to get rid of him.

1 more year and he will be gone more then likely, which is unfortunate, he played well in the 2008 final in Adelaide, but then the off field problems seem to have set him back a long way.

Not worth worrying about, you can't delist every "borderline" player when you have a strong list, and as stated because he is under contract we would be paying him no matter what.

Bad sign for Cook is that he is rated lower then Corrie now.

I know why. Firstly, Malthouse isn't a good enough judge. Secondly, Malthouse has only 2 years left to win a flag and so wants to prop up depth. Corrie and Cook can fill a hole if desperate but if we are that desperate we won't win the flag.

Aside from that horrific missed goal right in front!

He is (or was) an insurance policy.

If we had of known Lukey Ball was coming on board IMO Cookie would have been given "options" despite having have any sort of contract left. He would have best served like Stanners and looking for a new home.

Touch wood no injuries and he plays well in the VFL because he aint AFL level.

Pretty sure he would be getting $1500 weekly as the minimum contract is @80k isn't it?

I would have kept Stanley over Cook as insurance, but I suspect they thought Cook might be 'tagging' insurance - not that I ever noticed much of that going on.

That's not actually the case we could have cut him and promoted one of our rookies such as Blair or Keefe, from what many of us have seen Blair would have been better value on the senior list than Cook

because he was contracted.

having said that, im sure one of Cook or Corrie wouldve been delisted if Marty stayed.

Again, I doubt they'd cut someone mid contract.
I would suspect if Clarke had stayed we would not have drafted Buckley.

He is on the list now, so what does it matter? Get behind him I say, he has a year to prove himself and hopefully not having this court case hanging over his head will help him get back on track.

I'm far from his biggest fan, I'm actually one of his biggest knockers, but he is there now and he should have our support. He has actually proven he can play competently AFL level in the past so it isn't completely unfathomable that he might become a regular senior. If nothing else, he provides decent depth and I mean, at least he can actually get on the field unlike Rusling.

In saying all that, he'd be on an absolute pittance so it isn't a major problem. And like Dawson said he is probably better than a pick in the 80's in a shit draft and none of our rookies are even close to getting a game, so why upgrade one (Blair definitely included)?

Worth also taking in to account Dane Swan had played about the same amount of games as Cook at the same age, was criticised heavily for being a list clogger at the time and he also had even more severe criminal incident resting over his head. The club stuck by him and the return has been extremely fruitful.
I'm certainly not suggesting Ryan Cook will turn into a Swan, because I highly doubt he will, but it is worth taking another perspective on the situation; you never know what can happen in football.

Umm, no it is the case or it would have happened as you explain.
Clearly the selectors don't agree with you

Contracts don't mean anything, a player can be sacked on contract, all the club does is pay him out and say goodbye

The club then has to pay out the "full contract", which in Ryan's case would probably be over 100K.

We couldn't just "cut him", no doubt we tried to trade him on, but I doubt anyone was interested.

I don't get the "big deal" over this anyway, he has shown some ability in the past, and now his off field problems are behind him he has one last chance to show if he has what it takes.

I wish him luck.:thumbsu:

The remainder of the contract, but yes, I don't think its a big deal either.
He is reasonable spare parts man

If Marty had stayed we probably wouldn't have picked up Simon Buckley.

They mean something because the money is still included under the salary cap. Then the money given to the player replacing him is also included under the salary cap. Given we had to ask several players to back-end their deals so we could front-end Luke Ball's contract, I doubt we had enough wiggle room for that level of pragmatism in list management.

I don't get why people hang shit on our VFL players.

We were close to a VFL flag last year largely due to our AFL listed players.

If they are coming close to a flag then you could argue that our AFL listed VFL players are better than other clubs.

To be honest, I don't even see why the negativity about Cookie.

Good endeavour, can run all day and knows how to find and slot the pill. He's also put on some bulk.

His decision-making was the key area that was 'questionable' and after seeing him play the VFL finals last year you'd even say that was mostly solved.

I'd sit back and watch a few VFL games at the start of this year and use my own eyes as judges instead of this recycled crap.

I doubt we tried to trade Cook as we would had not Time Too because we where Busy with the Jolly and Ball Trades.

Yeah Saints Re-Drafted Allen who has Retired so they can pay him out.

So I think they Kept him on and Said this is your Last Year unless you do Something to prove you would want to stay on the AFL list

[Insert Family Feud bow-boww sound effect]

Dave, there would have been plenty of time to offer Cookie up as a trade. They want him to do a job this year. At the end of the year it will be reckoning time.
