To me, that was the best ive seen Ryan Cook play since he joined the club.
His disposal was almost flawless, his tackling was as tough as anyones, and his defensive ability was great. Surely now they have to consider giving him more games.

He made one mistake in the goal square against Miller, but that was a strength issue which he will build on.

But even if he only gets 5/6 games this year, he is a cert to be in our best 22 next year and for a few years to come.

We are building a young future midfield, with players like him, McCarthy, Pendles, Thommo and Wellingham.

The future looks bright for the midfield all of a sudden.

And not to leave Shannon Cox out, 2 weeks in a row he has looked like a league footballer.

I thought his defensive ability was crap.

Cook was decent, nothing extra special but decent.

Cox wasnt good at all, didnt go hard enough at the ball or man all day, looked alright when we got on top in the third and then back to nothing. Albrit kicked a nice goal. I thought he didnt try hard enough last week but was going to let it go as he did some nice things this week he was very poor.

i dont think cox is up to it, doesnt attack the footy at all,
but cook played well, deserves to keep his spot
but playing back didn't suit him,
needs to be released into the mid more often,
maybe a wing.

Cook did his job, doesn't get me too excited yet but shows potential at this level. Cox has shown signs but needs to step up, I hate to bag players but he is running out of chances given that others are pressing for a spot.

I was actually rather impresed with Cook today. He showed some patches of a really good, AFL level player; without being a superstar. Laid some good tackles & chased hard. May have stuffed up occasionally but nothing too major.

Hopefully he can get a few more games this year because I think he does have some potential.

I also think it's good that even though one of our star midfielders was a late withdrawall, we have another player/s that can step up &, although not set the world on fire, can play a solid game. :thumbsu:

Cook looks OK without the ball, looks like a VFL player when he gets it. Also don't really like him in defense, size is a worry. Hopefully he's the tagger-in-training, as his endurance looks excellent.

Cox on the other hand looks great with the ball, looks like Lonie without it.

Cook wasn't horrible, but wasn't good either. Ahead of Toovey & Stanley based on that.

Cox showed glimpses. He has intensity issues that I think can be worked on but there's enough there to work with.

In the first qtr i was watchin him closely and although he got heaps of the ball, wasnt to convinced

As the game went on, was impressed, especially with his tackling

there was a bit in the game where cook just backed himself and took on a few players and kicked inside 50...that got my attention but overall he was pretty quiet. Needs to back himself more did do some nice things but then some bad things.. But would like to see him get a few more games its a pretty big step going from vfl to afl. Needs more exposure at the top level. Then we can really see what he is like.

Cox didnt impress me too much but jury is still out.

Ryan cook was excellent but with a full side in it might take him a couple more years to find a permanent spot however i disagree with cox..

doesnt really have a football brain, he almost looks lost when he is out there.. even on occasions looked a little bit weak

cant see him being in our side for too much longer
sorry guys..

Is it just me but when the ball came in quickly and cook was there i was always concerned. I would much rather see Goldsack played if that role is going to be a defensive matchup. he is a player better suited to playing in the back line than Cook and his long kicks and run out of defence is much better.

Cook was ok but still to be shown he is an AFL Level player.

Cook had an alrite game but just lacks something that could make him a good AFL footballer. His tackling though was encouraging.

Our other second tier midfielders in the VFL like him such as Iles and Stanley all have that something that they are quire good at. Iles is more of a linebreaker type but he lacks efficient disposal when put under pressure at times. Stanley is a in and under clearance player with a long kick but has yet to been given a chance in the midfield in the seniors to see if he can convert into an AFL footballer. Cook's engine is his biggest asset so maybe he should be trained to be a tagger but at the moment he is too vanilla.

I thought Cooky was quite solid today.

He was caught out once or twice when his opponent was running back towards goal in an open forward 50, yet, that was due to our turnovers further up the ground. Having said that I don't think he should be played in the back half.

He had 14 disposals, 5 tackles and an 86% efficiency. His tackling was terrific, his ball-use excellent and we know he has a huge engine so he is definitely a midfield option for the future.

Also, he was drafted bottom-aged so his improvement is very encouraging.

Agree completely. If Cox doesnt work harder to get the ball we wont be able to see how good he looks with it in his hands.

I have been a great believer that for a while Cook has been the most AFL ready of our youngster's with the least upside. He has an AFL ready tank and is generally an o.k kick and decision maker.

Most the time when at AFL level he looks. O.k, never stands out as not up to it nor makes you take notice of him, Yesterday however he looked like he was stronger and at VFL level has been doing some more inside type stuff. I think he could become a decent tagger at AFL level.

I disagree with most of the posts here, I have been very impressed with Cook in the other games this year but I think he was anonymous against the Demons. I agree he looked good when he didn't have the ball and his tackling was evidence of that. I think he should be persisted with he reminds me of a young Dane Swan --> Funny waddle type running style, proficient kick, has both an 'inside' and an 'outside' game and when played in midfield seems to get the pill. Cook also looks to have great indurance for one of his experience.

Cox is a poser, good skills but still a poser.

No, he was still Ryan Cook for that game.

He was okay, but will be dropped if Pendles is fit and so he should be. He lacks the body strength to stand up in tackles at AFL level, and he doesn't have any of Pendles'/Sharrod's/Cox's/Harry's evasive ability to help him avoid them.
