He's mostly an outside mid in a game where increasingly contested ball is an absolute must - look at the top rated juniors who had less than 33% contested possessions (you generally get names like Toumpas & Lucas who haven't lived up to expectations).

On the other hand, supposedly inside-only mid Wines is killing it.

Daisy simply doesn't help them structurally and Carlton were hardly reaching just to hit 95% of the cap as we were - he's the antithesis of the Boyd signing.
Can I have another Yarran for his work on the outside?

Thomas is a mid, but he's as outside as the type of player we're targeting in the draft for their skill and leadership. Guess the Dogs won't play Lachie Hunter, Hrovat and Dahlhaus who would love to emulate Daisy's best games as a mid who runs both ways.

Boyd deal is the anti-thesis of Kreuzer, Murphy and Gibbs signing for less than your unproven former pick one will be earning. Plus what you'll be paying Boyd. Thomas didn't cost us as least $6.9 million dollars plus pick six and our captain. Huge risk for a club that can't even pay Boyd without handouts.
Did anyone NOT out-perform daisy this year?? So, so bad. And carlton fans think the boyd contract is bad. Daisy's is an absolute albatross of a contract.
What are you paying Crameri who has a monkey on his back and is roughly the same age?

Bases on the Malceski compensation, the Thomas cost us a second round pick with Betts leaving.

Our salary cap isn't a concern with Betts, Garlett, Robinson, Scotland, Waite and Hampson all moving on for youth. Still have Judd and Carrazzo to go to manage our cap.

Don't even pretend Carlton weren't preparing to do the same before we trumped you. Carlton fans so bitter after calling Boyd theirs for a year.

Kruezer was probably just happy to get a pay cheque. He's done about as much with his career as Boyd to date

Caro seems to know more than what you do

The only difference between mine and Caro's statements is that my guess is in line with what is believed to be the salary cap rules.

Even if it isn't, we're paying Griff 800k next year (helping us meet the cap) and 100k thereafter (when Boyd's contract kicks in).

With all our other contracts sorted (Macrae/Stringer/Bont/Liberatore all signed on) it's not the absolute drama you and other GWS posters would have us believe.

Enjoy paying a 30 year old with a bad back great money from 2016 on.

Caro seems to know more than what you do

And you as well I suspect.... Acclaimed Football journalist in having industry contacts shocker..... You must be new to AFL.... Is your team new ???

Let's be realistic here. We've stated that we are paying some of Griffs salary, but haven't known how much - many figures have been stated. I've stated that my understanding was that we can only pay his salary up until the length of his original contract was complete - which seems logical. This is the first time I've heard of anyone paying it beyond this duration.

Many Giants fans claimed he was taking a pay cut to play for them. When in fact, he'll be paid more than Ablett does now. People are giving us shit for signing a promising KPF at 1M per year, you're outlaying 50% more on an ageing midfielder....

I'd be looking out for your COLA... Sooner or later someone in the media will figure out that this is how you are attracting players and it'll be gone like the Swans....

Interesting that Griffen's going to be in his 30's and on over 1.5 mil a year!
Got off lightly in this episode he has.

Agreed - very little scrutiny on his contract, conduct or ethical behaviour. It'll come....

Just staggering how supporters can laugh off paying a guy that kind of coin to play against you. Surely you would prefer to front load the best 4-5 youngsters on the list than give money away. I would be asking for the people responsible to be moved on.

I'm increasingly astonished how bitter some of the GWS supporter base has become. AFLWS has been gifted the most astonishing array of draft talent in history and yet you have very quickly become one of the most miserable supporter bases on Bigfooty. Take it to the bay or take it to your home page. The Boyd/Griff Pick 6 trade is one of the more even ones in AFL history. No real winner/no real loser. I think the shock of the trade turning from massively in GWS favour with Griff refusing to speak to the dogs and bending our club over a barrel to a fairly equitable outcome that neither club was totally delighted with and both felt a bit done by (ie equitable trading) has sent some posters off the deep end. It's done. You guys have a very, very good mid and an early pick and we have a tall forward who has the potential to become the central forward we've been desperate for for 15 years. The money is actually immaterial for GWS. Not sure what people are trolling for as its a pretty decent outcome for all.

What bitterness? Think youll find its mostly dogs fans bagging griffen. Most giants fans are happy for boyd with what he got.
We are amused at what you did to get him but not bitter.

Daisy averages 2.8 tackles per game
Hunter (who played as a sub for quite a few of his games) averages 2.6
Hrovat 3.1
Dahlhaus 4.1

Really not the best point to bring up.

Nice try, but all clubs receive AFL distributions from media rights and these distributions only vary by around 12%, so 18 clubs are getting "handouts".

We're only just getting to 95% cap next year, which means we can 105-rule in 2015. Smart list management (that's the year Boyd's deal is heavily weighted), just as Stringer & Macrae's deals are weighted to this year.

Crameri, who has just won his 4th club goal-kicking award in a row, is somewhere between $400k & 450k which for the best goalkicker in a competition with average salary around $300k is fair (some would argue last year with his workload it was unders.

I would expect Carlton's cap is well managed given due diligence would be conducted by any club prior to an FA offer, not sure why you expect I think otherwise.

We are.

Where have you heard different?

Given that Boyd and Bontempelli are on the standard 2nd year draftee wages next year, it's a bit hard to pay them massive overs next year. But the many experts on the Dogs salary cap situation on here would already be aware of this, I'm sure...

We had issues last year as well - hence Stringer & Macrae signing up so quickly to extensions.
The war chest isn't quite empty yet either so I imagine we're looking at offers for one more big signing this year

Oh yes, I seem to recall that Bontempelli re-signed until 2017 a few months ago.........

Would prefer a gun mid if we are in the market for a big name, but if it's another key forward then so be it.

I'd prefer to hold firm at the moment with the rest of our cap space just to hold a bit in reserve if a player like a bontempelli, stringer asks for more. Like to keep at least 500k in reserve but I still think we have 1m cap space left over (even with boyd) so we could say use 500k a season on another good mid/free agent or a KPD if we need. Keep our first 2015 pick and use it on one of those mids.

A quick general reminder since since people seem to have forgotten - attacks on clubs and supporter bases will generate thread bans, especially if it's a club unrelated to this trade.

Is it worth locking some of these threads ? The trades are done, no amount of arguing is going to reverse them, let people retreat back and whinge on their own board about how unfair it was ???

Tom Scully outperformed Dale Thomas this year (scary but true).

In any case, no 1 KPFs are not that common - those that were dominant juniors and clear cut no 1 picks even moreso. The team that has taken Macrae, Stringer & Bontempelli judged him to be worth it so that provides some comfort - the fact we now can actually make 95% of the salary cap is a bonus.
Every club would take Boyd. Trading for a former pick one is hardly a reflection on Dalrymple who used a first round pick on Howard who was a smokey.

You drafted Stringer or Macrae with a compensation pick because you couldn't keep Ward.

Imagine how good our recruiting would be if we had been gifted Liberatore, Wallis, Cordy (x two, but Ayce has been a spud) and Hunter on top of Menzel and Cripps. Dogs might be second to Collingwood or another club for F/S selections with the Cats having a lot.

We're talking about trading him, not drafting him.

Every recruiter has misses, so mentioning anything in desperation to try and make a point (if you have one) you should probably put forward something noteworthy.

You drafted Stringer or Macrae with a compensation pick because you couldn't keep Ward.
So gaining a player on a big offer is bad, losing one because another club during an unprecedented start up phase made a big offer is bad.
Then choosing 2 out of the three best players from that draft on current output is nothing special despite the past beign littered with examples of pick in the top ten who aren't stars.

Great logic.

Imagine if we were shit for ten years so loaded up on no 1 draft picks...

Hypotheticals are easy. Even noting our FS picks were introduced after the bidding system.

Shit im no accountant but why cant you bring fwd extra payments to other senior contracted players rather than pay your former captain to play against you?

You're clearly no list manager either.... :p

We lost Griffen, Cooney, Higgins, Gia, Williams, Jones, Tutt this year. Boyd almost retired as well. We've only got a handful of senior guys left....

Big rises for Stringer, Macrae, Hunter, Liberatore etc this year. Next year it'll be Boyd, Bontempelli etc.

We'll muddle through....
