Whoda thunkit? Decent but not awe-inspiring domestic record yet has made very strong starts in all forms of the game, superlative in ODIs. Great control of swing, good pace and good accuracy.

Looks set to usurp Siddle for the third pace spot and will be hard to see Hilfy replacing him given Hilfy's ongoing injury problems.

Thoughts?

When Hilfenhaus is fit, he will come back. He troubled the Poms, so he just needs to stay fit. He offers something different - Harris might just have passed McKay and Siddle for that last spot. Siddle is still a favourite and would be in the reckoning for the Ashes.

Don't let Harris's record at domestic record mislead you - he creates a lot of pressure for bowlers at the other end benefit from. He is really a team player and doesn't drop his head.

harris should play ahead of siddle providing he keeps swinging it.siddles got a big heart but needs a few more tricks to his bowling.

He's ahead of Siddle and Hilfenhaus now. Bowls that old 80's "West Indian" length with, bounce, pace and seam. While not necessarily saying he's quite as good he fills Stuart Clark's place nicely.

I faced him a few years ago with no lid, made 3 off 20 odd balls on a green top, that's all I've got.

Been very impressive in the Test series, does the job, gets good pace, good control and swing at times. Definitely should be ahead of Siddle and probably ahead of Hilfy.

Seems to bowl a very heavy ball, i like the looks of him. Good honest workhorse. I like the looks of our attack with guys like Bollinger and Harris in it, you know the lads are always going to give 100%

makes me wonder whether FC stats like his (batsmen or bowlers) mask an upswing in his career. you can have an ordinary start while your FC stats stay average, meanwhile you're playing the cricket of your life (which you then end up replicating in the test/odi arena?).

regardless have to say it's so far been a decent pick-up by the selectors.

Disagree with this (in regards to tests anyway).

If Hilfenhaus was fit, he'd play ahead of Harris. Hilfenhaus was superb against England and very consistent in his run before injury.

Perhaps he (Harris) might have the upper hand on Siddle, but even then I think Siddle would be breathing down his neck.

To me Harris is the type of bowler that needs that zip and pace for him to produce, and as soon as he loses a little bit he'll struggle. He's no young'un going on 31.

For now though, he's done a solid job. Hopefully he continues to produce when Australia needs it.

I think the selectors (although they seem to lack the ability to learn) should have learnt a little something from the performance of Bollinger & Harris this summer.

It's all well and good to have young bowlers in the side learning their craft but you need experienced, seasoned bowlers who know how to apply pressure and take wickets to back them up.

Harris give me the impression he could continue to apply pressure on most decks even if he's not getting wickets. Has pace, bounce with a good line and length. The type others feed off, especially a bowler of Johnson's type. Our conditions suit that type of bowler as compared to England. On the other hand I like Hilfenhaus so I wouldn't mind him being first picked if that was the case. He's done well whereever he's played and against good opposition. Siddle's down the order a bit now, at least IMO. Unlike Bollinger, Harris and Hilfenhaus he struggles to maintain consistent pressure. Not keen on Siddle being in the same side as Johnson. Not for now anyway. That may change over time.

Will it appears at least now the media/commentary have stopped crapping on about our fast bowling stocks being down and saying how much we miss McGrath.

I thought he was fairly impressive all series, if anything 9 wickets at 23 doesn't reflect how well he bowled.

I don't buy the thinking that hilfenhaus walks right back in for harris when he's fit.

Bollinger is basically our strike bowler now, johnson seems to be first change for the foreseeable future so who takes the new ball for the ashes will probably depend on how/if hilf comes back from injury and if harris goof's up or continues to perform vs pakistan in june.

Short of injury to one of the quick's i seriously doubt hilfenhaus will be taking the new ball in england.

Hilfenhaus has been out so long he would need to play some lower grade cricket to prove fitness. I doubt he would be considered for England, let him start the domestic summer next year and see how he goes.

We ran both Hilf and Siddle into the ground playing meaningless ODI's, right now happy with the Rug, Harris and MJ as our bowling attack for the winter.

Come next summer in the Ashes hope we have those 5 bowlers (plus the young quicks pushing through) fit and firing. Then let the best bowlers come into the side and we have a healthy rotation going on.

One thing for certain (although our selectors don't learn much if anything from past mistakes) is that we should never have the same quicks as our Test bowlers and our ODI bowlers.

Need to have a rotation of 5 or so to prevent injury excepting MJ because every time we give him a break he comes back bowling rubbish.

Hilfenhaus should come in ahead of him. Hilfenhaus was our best quick in england and looked a class above in Brisbane before breaking down. Hopefully he can get himself fit again.

Guys like Harris, Siddle are the Kaspers/Bichels of the modern day IMO. Honest workhorses who do a good job when filling in but should not have a spot in the top side.

1. Johnson
2. Bollinger
3. Hilfenhaus
4. Harris
5. Siddle

This is probably how the selectors see it. Personally, I reckon Siddle is still part of our best attack, as well as Hilfenhaus and Johnson but Dougie has done nothing to deserve a dropping. So Siddle will have to fight to get his spot back.

Should Defiantly be in our test side, thats 4 sure.

Ryan Harris has performed very well in the shorter forms of the game and is making it very hard for players like Peter Siddle to break back into the team. He has numerous 5 wicket hauls and keeps the opposition guessing. He is a very good recruit.

Siddle's going to have to extract the digit there's no doubt, he's in danger of being overrun by a few newbies if he doesn't. Though i guess with being a quick bowler, they get injured so often he'll no doubt get another chance.

Does anyone know much about Burt Cockley (I think that's his name), he's been talked about a fair bit, apparently he's very quick?

I'm pretty sure Burt Cockley is on the comeback trail after missing a large chunk of last year with injury (back stress fractures according to cricinfo). Have heard on the cricket grapevine that he has had to substantially remodel his action as part of his rehab.

I recall seeing him bowling in 2008-09 at the Gabba when he was certainly sharp, although remember Crash Craddock in The Courier-Mail describing him as a "heavy-legged" athlete who pounded the ground rather than ran in. Craddock tipped he might have some injury battles at some point in his career.

Funny though, if you look at the recent Aus & Aus A selections, the likes of Harris, Cutting, George, Feldman, Drew, Pattinson & Haberfield have all gone past him.

Be interesting to see how the Blues use him from here too - maybe another who elects to become a white ball specialist?

Hope that's helpful! :)
