@ylook4 Coll & Frem chose not to nominate Kelly and Lester-Smith as rookie father-sons, meaning any club can still select them tomorrow.

I wonder if Mellington and him and fighting for the one spot, and as Mellington is guaranteed, Lester-Smith will only get picked up if Mellington is selected before our last pick.
Why ?
We know he can play !
I heard a whisper that that was coming.
Any reasons provided?
No. Just that he will be considered, and that he wasn't the lock he was assumed to be when he was nominated F/S.
From stuff going around, Freo are very keen on quite a few players in the rookie draft. Chances are there just isn't any room for him this year. As Docker82 said if he slips through we have the F/S option next year if he shows a bit more in the WAFL.
Thanks for that. As you said, emotion can't come into these decisions - if you think you can get 3 better players then why settle for someone inferior... who will be there at your last pick anyway.
Then , how do we explain Menegola.
I wonder if the whole point of mentioning him for the rookie list father son is a ploy by his manager to get talked about in recruiting circles. We may have been approached by his manager who asked for us to nominate him father-son knowing full well we wouldn't take him.
Fremantle has similarly decided against prelisting Ryan Lester-Smith, the son of former East Fremantle goalkicker Neil, as a rookie, after he too was overlooked in the national draft. The Dockers have told the 21-year-old half-forward they will not automatically list him, but the club is open to selecting him with one of its two or three selections.
What I don't understand is why we're apparently not against drafting him yet have cancelled his father/son application. It would be weird if we still pick him up.

I don't really see an issue with that.Because he only wants to be at the club if no-one else will take him. I just wish Freo weren't so submissive sometimes. But as I have said before, Freo make decisions on pure utility, not emotion.
I don't really see an issue with that.
Everyone would like to earn their living being on an AFL list. That's his base wish. That's Fremantle offer.
But then there are opportunities above that. Not only does he make the money Freo offer, but he feels he has a fresh start and better chances to play more AFL.
So if he can't get that new club that he believes will be better for him, he'll go for what's 'worst' for him. We'd all do the same.
It's like if one of us were drafted to St Kilda, struggling for games and a reasonable chance to never play AFL again... but Freo come in with an offer. Wouldn't you say "I'd prefer Freo, but if the Saints are still there, then..."
Can't have both Mellington and RLS on our list. Good decision. He'll slip right through IMO, meaning we can go through the same process next year if he performs well enough. Just hope the kid looks at it as he is getting closer to his afl dream and comes out and completely dominates wafl next year. Good luck to him!!!
