Sachin Tendulkar turns out to be a massive sook

The Indians were on the receiving end of some poor umpiring decisions as the Test played out which angers Tendulkar but he broadened his attack in the book, claiming Clarke, Ponting and Gilchrist had engaged in unsportsmanlike play to win the Test.

“By the fifth day we were batting to save the game. Mind you, there is little doubt in my mind that we would have drawn had it not been for what seemed to us to be mistakes by the umpires and some rather unsportsmanlike conduct by a few of the Australian players. Rahul Dravid was given out caught behind off Symonds for 38 by umpire Bucknor when his bat seemed to be a fair distance away from the ball. The wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist was standing up to the stumps at the time and was in the best position to see if the ball had touched Rahul’s bat. Yet he who prided himself on walking off if he nicked the ball appealed for the caught-behind and to our disbelief we saw the umpire raise the finger. It was a shocking decision. Some of us actually wondered if Rahul had been given out lbw.”

Granted, it is only an extract from his book (maybe the book itself has full details), but Tendulkar is being short with the truth.
Firstly, IIRC, he was at the other end of the pitch. He claimed that Singh hadn't said anything, which is consistent with the fact that he was probably out of ear shot. Singh also denied he said anything, and blamed Symonds for the whole thing (Symond himself conceded he had been deliberately goading Bhaji).

It was only on appeal that Singh started claiming he used the term "teri maa ki", and Tendulkar corroborated the story. Which begs the question... why didn't Singh mention this the moment the incident happened on the field? It probably would have calmed the whole situation down. Why didn't Kumble mention this when Ponting approached him at the end of the day? At that point, Kumble was prepared to apologise to Symonds on behalf of the Indian team -- but Ponting wasn't happy with that because Singh was still claiming he'd said nothing. And why wasn't it pointed out during the hearing with Proctor?

IMHO, the simple answer is that Singh lied, and Tendulkar probably thought he was doing the right thing in standing by his team mate.

And none of this explains (or justifies) why the BCCI basically threatened to pull out of the tour. I mean, it's not like the threat of millions of dollars in losses might have had an impact on the appeal, right?

But Tendulkar is a god, and can do no wrong.

Tendulkar has always enjoyed a reputation for having outstanding integrity. For what, I don't know. On field he always struck as me as just as being just as petulant as any other cricketer, and I'm not surprised he is using his book as a platform to take shots at various people or to rewrite history.

He is just like any other successful person, and this is pretty much what successful people do when they write books.

Edit: That is not to say what he has written is untrue. I wouldn't be surprised if the stuff about Greg Chappell is accurate.

most of the indian cricketers are arrogant flogs, worshipped as gods in their poverty stricken country, who get what they always want. If they dont, its off to cry to the BCCI, who unfortunately earns 70% of the cricketing world's income:(

The 41-year-old, considered one of the all-time cricketing greats, promised to be a vocal supporter of sport when he was sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha of parliament in June 2012.

But parliamentary records show the former batsman has not attended a single session this year. He made it to just three in 2013 and has so far not participated in any debates in the House.

Although Indian legislators are notorious for failing to show up, Tendulkar has the worst record of all, with just three percent attendance last year, according to the monitoring group PRS Legislative Research.

The batsman was expected to be more of a presence this year after retiring from cricket last November, and some lawmakers ventured veiled criticism of him on Wednesday -- although none dared to mention him by name.

"These MPs were selected so that they can be present and make a difference in the society. But I have never seen him in the House," Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Agarwal told parliament on Wednesday, in an apparent reference to Tendulkar.

D.P. Tripathi, an MP of the Nationalist Congress Party, said people who are not serious about attending parliament should not be nominated to the House.

"Their performance in the House has been despicable to say the least. This is an insult to the Indian parliament and such people should not be nominated to this House," he said.

Tendulkar, the highest run-getter in both forms of the game, retired after playing in 200 Tests and scoring 15,921 runs.

He was offered one of the 12 seats in the upper house that are reserved for those who have distinguished themselves in various fields such as the arts, sciences or social services.

looks like the little garden gnome isn't the perfect citizen as he is revered to be

I never thought much of him tbh, from memory he wanted to boycott the tour after all this. And Harbhajan is one of the biggest flogs to play the game, behind Sreesanth.

so Singh lied and then Tendulkar lied to cover up racial abuse. Both of them should have been banned for an extended period.

I still maintain we should have told the BCCI to get ****ed. We'd have been fine. this isn't a West Indies Vs India, david vs goilath situation.

its a disgrace that Ponting's reputation has been damaged when it was Singh and Tendulkar who were behind the entire thing. Ponting did everything right throughout the entire situation, including reporting to the match referee as he was required to by ICC playing conditions. And then a day later you have people calling for Punters head in the press. Disgraceful.

Karma is a bitch and the Indians got plenty of that on the 5th day.

I'll barrack for England in the Ashes before I feel sorry for India.

theres only a few guys from the Indian team during that era i have respect for... Dravid.. VVS..

Tendulkar / Kumble are lying scum bags and their actions post cricket have shown that so far.

"Great players, crap people" would be a fair summary.

Not only that, but the Indians had specifically been warned that Symond found the name "monkey" to be racially offensive, after he had been abused by Indian crowds. AND after Harbhajan had called him a monkey in a prior one day match.

Shortly after the Sydney match, the Indians then reported Brad Hogg for using the term "bastard". The Indians had actually been given the chance to submit a list of banned words prior to the start of the series, but bastard wasn't on the list. But this didn't stop them from reporting him anyway.

So basically, when Ponting actually followed ICC regulations and reported racial abuse, he was criticised by the Indians. But when Kumble reported Hogg for doing something that wasn't actually against the rules, there was no issue.

To Kumble's credit, the Hogg incident was resolved with the charges being dropped.

I remember when Tendulkar scored 74 in his last innings, the CA Facebook page posted a pic that had a separate image of Tendulkar above one of Dizzy, saying 'scores 74 in final innings....127 less than Dizzy'.

The Indians went nuts, some of the comments were beyond stupid.

I would like nothing more than see Australia destroy India in the test series then absolutely destroy them in the World Cup final.

Maybe Mitch could sandshoe every Indian batsman when they come to the crease - 11 fieldsmen with broken toes could be interesting :-)

Not to mention the damage it did to Symmo. Was hung out to dry and never really recovered.
