So he borrowed money to buy a part of a business in which he presumably effectively has no say? Not only that, but he borrows so much that when the market readjusts he loses his "properties" (plural) and has to live, with his wife and three children, with his father?

What a huge surprise St Kilda is now left with a broken list.

That is breathtakingly naive Ben.

I am tipping very few people go to Lyon for financial advice, so for me it is no "huge surprise".

Naivety doesn't leave your kids homeless, ignorance might though.
well, he's doing alright now. he loves saying 'failure is feedback' so you'd think he's learnt something from that experience. the guy was born in reservoir. i presume not everyone from reservoir knows the world of shares and investment inside out.

I tried to delete that comment as I thought it was a bit harsh on reflection.

But really, surely there is a massive question mark over the bloke if he has the capacity to make decisions that put him and his family in those sorts of positions?

Really? It's pretty easy to understand how anyone could do it. $2 million portfolio geared at 50%, stock market halves you've lost all your money.

No idea how Lyon lost so much, but you don't need to be a gambler in the traditional sense. Hell, WHEN the property market halves there would be financial carnage like never seen before.

I really don't see how the finances of our senior coach are anyone's business.

Nobody is 100% perfect at everything they do and that is a fact. Another fact is that he is easily (imo) the best coach that Fremantle has ever had and he is 1 of 18 people in the world that currently hold his particular position of employment and he has done so for a long enough period to prove that he knows what he is doing.

I don't want to sound hostile, but I'm sure you aren't perfect at everything you do Benji McPherson.

This is actually the stupidest thing I've ever seen on this site. And with Plugger35, and wambat around that is really saying something. You sir, are a ****wit.

Geeez, you have just admitted to not having the capacity to delete your comment, yet think some guy who has had some problems managing his personal finances should have massive question marks?

I love the way that at our club he is not at the apex of player development and recruitment, and instead has a strong group of people who are responsible for that, leaving him to do the coaching. I reckon you should have massive question marks over why St Kilda did not provide that kind of support when it became obvious that he was prone to making some odd decisions (Ball, Peake, etc). I doubt if they cared at all about his personal finances or they would have sealed his contract early to give him some stability and surety.

Not really, life is full of risks. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and all that jazz.

Some of the wealthiest people have been bankrupt before they made it.

Look, like I said, I don't know exactly what the story was in Lyon's case. Maybe he took ridiculous risks with his money. But plenty of people around the world have had their money tied up in investments considered safe and lost it all.

Do you blame someone in Geelong that lost money when Pyramid went belly up? Sometimes you can just be unlucky.

Sure, but it reflects on his decision-making doesn't it? The Saints had a lot of off-field problems during his tenure, but the ship has straightened since Ross left.

Is that a coincidence, or was the poor decision making among the Saints players during that 5 years period a reflection on the coach as much as the players?

Dunno, but they made 2 grand finals and came within a bees dick both times.

We're not employing him as a financial adviser.

just because you're smart at one thing doesn't mean you're necessarily brilliant at everything, though. it's a bit of a simplification.

who knows what went on at the saints during his tenure. with success comes extra pressure and maybe the players didn't handle that too well. compounded with the weirdness of the kim duthie problem and the ricky nixon saga and it looks plain weird. but the milne and montagna stuff came before ross, so you wonder if it was as much elements within the club as anything else. from our experience casting aspersions at ross seems like a lot of character assassination from people who just have a bad read of him.

This is a really good point actually.

In the light of the fact that (according to you guys) Ross is focussed on coaching while leaving the other stuff to the extended coaching staff, the off-field stuff hopefully won't rear its ugly head again.

No doubt he'll help Freo accumulate a great win:loss rate while he is there.

he's arguably already our most successful coach given our wretched history. we are better resourced than the saints were when he was there. we have a development academy and a recruitment department, who would take on his counsel but operate relatively autonomously. it does boil down to the pressure of success and the high-octane levels of training and surgical precision discipline that he demands. as a group we've been hungry for that but after a while you do have to release some pressure every now and then. that's probably my main concern with ross and i hope he's learned that lesson with the saints. one interesting comment came from sumich when a journo asked him if it was harder working under ross than woosha. suma said it was easier because you could go home as soon as your work was done. so that gives me some comfort.

Hmmm.. might've been something to do what thing the news kept talking about, something about a GFC? And not the Geelong Football Club.
