Autopsy Saints v Dees

Weekly request for Ross to move Caminiti forward. He's just had 6 kicked on him by Jacob Van Rooyen of all people. Yes, the midfield was poor with some of their defensive efforts but Camma can only be excused so much before it's his problem

Our forward line wasn't terrible against Melbourne but its still pretty clear we're missing that focal point - like a JVR. Caminiti takes the #1 defender so that Sharman doesnt have to cop Petty, Owens doesn't have to cop Turner, and Ryan doesn't have to cop Lever. I don't understand why we haven't at least tried it for a half of football especially since we have so much flexibility now with the 5th man on the bench, not to mention the fact that Keeler can also play a bit in defence

At this point I don't think a smaller defence of Silvagni, Wilkie, Tauru would be much worse than this 4-tall setup. Something about it is not working. Is it too tall, too slow, or too inexperienced even? Would have to think Stocker comes in next week but will be interesting who goes out

Hopefully Howard was decent in the VFL

I dont think we have another option. The fwd line is terrible and the backline is leaking.

I think we'll need to send Hammer fwd. Keeler out. Tauru ain't a fwd yet. Hes too gassed.

Wood is offering less and less offensively.

Higo down on form.

We really need one of the tall forwards to step up. Maybe try Tauru up there? Sharman has had great hands in the past, no idea what's going on with him his goal kicking is usually reliable too.

Wilkie? How many times did he let number 13 fly for marks, which he took, while Wilkie stayed down.
It's great that he's expecting the other Saints fliers to bring the ball to ground and getting sh!tty when they don't but it's his opponent taking the mark.
He didn't cover himself in glory yesterday I didn't think.

it's the balance of going in for the footy in packs, and someone staying back. the way good teams do it is having 1-2 at contest and the rest positioned to help. last week way too many were crashing contests; this week we clearly tried to fix that but we still didn't get the balance right. I have no doubt Wilkie was trying to do the right thing but the Saints player in the contest didn't hold up his end of the bargain.

And now we're staring down the barrel of the first 0-3 start since 1996.
Yep. Lousy start.

But I don’t think that stat is worth anything, or a predictor of anything 20 years later. It’s just a stat. Different team. Different players.

We could be 2-0. It's so frustrating but at the end of the day the game is about winning. It seems so obvious and dumb but we need to find out how to win again.

This is true.
I just don’t thinking quoting what happened in 1996! Is at all relevant.

Slightly sarky post on here somewhere saying no Byrnes no Saints ( cbb finding it)….
In all seriousness, not a star - but he gives 100% and you know what you get from him. We could do a lot worse than having him in the team right now.

This team is far from the finished product, I hope the coaches still experiment a bit and don’t get stubborn. Wanna see some changes this week with player positions and game style.

Give Mitchito and Hall more of a midfield run, Tauru or Caminiti should go forward with King still out. Macrae looks past it. Boxshall and Keeler aren't quite ready yet. Not sure how Dougal's going in the VFL but Caminiti is on notice. First real VFL game should create some opportunities to come in.

Banfield, Stocker and Marshall to provide some physicality, Collard's pace and pressure will be an asset the way the game is shaping.

OUT: Phillipou, Macrae, Keeler, Boxshall
IN: Marshall, Stocker, Collard, Banfield

Start the game with Owens, Hall and Nas in the middle. Tauru up forward.

Won't happen... because apparently in 1914 Robert Harvey said Mitchito isn't a midfielder so that was etched in stone and placed upon a mountain top for Moses to find. (ok... my dates are somewhat confusing but you get the picture)

Leave that sort of stuff to rnd 18 or 19 when we have nothing to play for 😂

2 Captains in defence and let 2 goals through vacant square at head height unforgivable.

Yep, looked lost at sea in terms of who is responsible for what. The look on Sinclair's face when Kozzy snapped that chest high goal through with no one on the line, even he knew it was shit immediately. This group would want to pull their fingers out right quick.

Sharman is a down hill skier. The difference between his best and worst is horrendous.

Having said that theyve put all their chips in the king basket. They've also refused to move Hammer fwd and gone for his presence down back.

The backline is a basket case right now.

Last week they even moved Tauru forward with about 5 minutes left on the clock instead of Caminiti. It would appear the Caminiti FWD era is dead and gone, I was kind of hoping the key defender stuff was a spell and he was just learning.

King and Henry can't get on the field and Clark to a lesser degree. Butler reinvents himself as a small defender.

Dodson behind two other rucks.

9+ spots to be filled from error prone players or younger guys not properly ready.

Who did we actually fully develop from 18 year olds? I count 4 players. That is damning on past and present coaches.

I get it. But it's still his opponent flying at the ball and taking the mark.
He's the captain, organise it so that he's spoiling. It happened multiple times.
And moaning at teammates isn't leadership. Decision making and teaching are.
Get your own job done first and foremost.
Wilkie has had a payrise and been made captain. There's two ends to that bargain.

Ross has gotta stop with this 'flood the contest' bullshit.

Everyone goes in, no one (bar Brad Hill) seems to hold shape, and we get caught on the inside.

Then, when we do win the footy, wings and half backs get so aggressive, that when it's eventually turned over we're absolutely cooked running defensively.

I get the need for finding scores vs. sitting back and let the opposition chip around, but right now there is no balance. And if we get exposed with no balance against Melbourne, good grief we're in for hidings the next few weeks.

Anyway, I was as the game and have watched the replay (amazing what different experiences they can be sometimes) and we did a lot wrong. But we also did a lot right.
There's a change in intent tactically so I'm going to give it time. We have a coach with a good history of embedding a style of play, which I think can only really happen in actual games.
