Traded Sam Docherty (2012-2013)

Have been pleased to see over the last month Docherty making an impact on the game. It has only been slight but there has been gradual improvement each game. Hope he stays in for the remainder of the season and then goes into the pre season pumped for a big one.

Doc's disposal by foot was disappointing today. It was meant to be one of his big assets.

Watched him closely today from a very good vantage point and was again disappointed. There's probably been only one or two games where I've been impressed and even then those games were nothing to ride home about. To be honest, I'm still not sure what the fuss is about and unless he develops his game further up field, he is a fair way behind other small-mid sized defenders such as Adcock, Golby, Yeo and Harwood.

I'm starting to become a fan, looks like he's getting close to being adjusted to the pace of the game the last 2 weeks.

His disposal but foot certainly doesn't look as good as it was in the under 18's. But back then he would have had a lot more space than he would in the seniors. One would assume we picked him up early due to the midfield talent he possesses. I rate him fairly highly. Played under a half of football and thought he did well. Only played the 10 games and probably half of them would have seen him play about a quarter of football. I feel he is progressing nicely.

Not every player can make a immediate impact in 10 games of AFL football. Takes a while to adjust. He is showing glimpses. I can live with that.

Looks like he is starting to adjust to the pace of the game and looks like a very even player. Has a great base to build from and will be surprised if he does not end up a really good, damaging midfielder.

Haircut has improved immeasurably.

"Adjusting to the pace of the game" seems to be a common theme when assessing Sam's progress.

I think that he struggles a bit playing as the sub, in that he sometimes seems to try too hard to pinpoint passes, or impact contests, in an effort to make a difference, and he therefore goes better when named in the run-on 21.

I can see Sam making similar progress to Mitch Golby next year, and most of us would be happy with that.

Yeah he is a different sort of player but I was going to write that his development remands me very much of Golby.

I remember saying at the time that even though Golby was not always executing he was always looking to do the right thing and could look like a good young footballer even when getting beaten.

I see Sam much more as a Luke Power type of player.

I'd much rather have a young player who is picking the right options, but failing to execute rather than the other way round. It's easier to get skill levels up and having natural improvement from playing at the top level, rather than having to teach footy nous.

Doc hasn't really stood out to me this year, but I can't really fault him much either. I think he is playing much more midfield rather than a loose running off half back type role he is use to. I think Golby is a good comparison, where he did well, and you just expected him this year to really lunch his game to best 22 calibre. I think Doc will do something similar.

Agreed, Golby's first year of senior footy was blighted by poor foot skills - where this was strength I'm his game previously. Took him a while to adapt, but is now one of our better kicks going through the middle of the ground.

Docherty can thump the ball off either foot, and has shown good accuracy previously when given space. I'm sure this will come.

You might say, he's hungry for the contest?

This is not what you said in the game day thread...

I thought the saying was Write home about?

He is slowly improving.

I'm worried he's picking up some bad habits. That moment in the third quarter where he kicked to a one-on-two contest instead of handballing over the top to a teammate in space was Adcock-like.

The $1.5 million we are due to improve the coaching / development dept. can not arrive quickly enough; the next 2 yrs is vital for our group, especially for the likes of Doc, Clarke, Yeo, Beams, Polec etc....

A Doc / Yeo half back flank combo with Hanley and Polec on the wings could be a devastating headache for our opposition :footy:

Must re-sign Doc & Polec as priorities

Lions sack Voss to stop player walkout
August 13 2013
Andrew Hamilton

The Lions were facing a player crisis with Billy Longer, Sam Docherty, Jared Polec, James Polkinghorne and Patrick Karnezis all expressing a desire to be traded. There had been strong murmurs that senior players such as Tom Rockliff had also become frustrated with Voss.

not sure how much of that could be true, players are just unsigned and media speculates its cause of vossy, most players sign contracts at the end of the season
