NEAFL Round 9 vs UWS Giants

Sam Docherty kicked the goal of the day, and his first for his new club, at the start of the second stanza.

The Lions' #1 cleanly gathered a loose ball just inside the paint 70 metres out, swivelled and turned two Giants defenders inside out, took a bounce as he accelerated clear of another, and split the sticks at full pace from the boundary.

The midfield model of Karnezis wasn’t the only significant ‘find’ of the day from a Lions perspective.

Sam Docherty, taken at No.12 in last year’s National Draft from the Gippsland Power and playing just his fifth game in the Reserves after an injury-disrupted preparation, was a standout across half back.

The 18-year-old rebounding defender, who many thought would be snapped up even earlier in the draft by the GWS Giants, showed real explosiveness as he collected “a mountain of possession” and won lavish praise from his coach.

“He (Docherty) looks to have found a bit of touch which is really exciting so hopefully he’ll have a big back end of the season,” Clarke said.

Sam Docherty was another who had a season best outing, amassing 28 clean touches and providing a lot of rebound from the backline.

Nathan Clarke
“Sam Docherty was also very good, particularly in the first half when he racked up 20-plus possessions. He was very composed and gave us plenty of speed once we were clear from congestion. He’ll become a very, very good young player.”

Do observers think that Docherty will crack a senior berth and a handful of games this year?

Voss seems to have been giving a variety of young players a run. Is there a place for Docherty and is he banging the door down for selection?

Sounds like he is really finding his feet again now and he's got a fairly mature body. Could definitely play senior footy this year.

Our backline looks very settled though, so barring injury, it may be tricky for him to get a game.

Mitch Golby into the middle, & Sam onto his flank.

Hopefully they push him into the midfield in the ressies soon. Similar to Karnezis we know Doc can play on the back flank run him through the middle and give him a chance to show he can play there.

Nah, he has awesome speed and a deadly boot on him, weapons like that do not grow on trees. Reckon they will be keen to get him up and running soon as they can.

He and Drummo could be devistating.

Given his attributes, maybe there are even other roles in the side that Docherty could play, such as on a wing or half-forward.

Can he win the ball well enough?

Seemed like the kind of kid who would be easy to coach when I talked to him at the players sponsors function. Said he played as a forward as a kid but has mainly been a hbf/winger through his last few years. Don't think there is any reason why he couldn't do a job in pretty much any non key-position.

I'd like to see him as a winger to start with. Drummond, Adcock, Golby and McGrath are all pretty good at providing run out of defence but it's the next kick that's often the problem. A second good long kick would give us a needed zone-busting leg that doesn't belong to Rich.

But with the senior Lions team enjoying a rare purple patch with three wins from their past four matches, positions have become increasingly hard to come by.

That has directly affected the likes of Claye Beams, Patrick Karnezis, Elliot Yeo, Jordan Lisle, Sam Docherty and Jack Crisp, who have all been particularly impressive with the Reserves in recent weeks, without getting rewarded at the selection table.

Reserves Wrap

“The Swans kicked four goals to nothing in first 15 minutes of the game and gave us a real lesson in intensity. Our guys were being tested for the first time in a while, and were able to adapt and regain control of the contest.”

“It was particularly evident in some of our first year guys. Sam Docherty, for example, had a first half that he would probably rather forget. But to his credit, he bounced back well.”

Also banging on the selection door is first-round draftee Docherty, whose first ever pre-season was delayed following hip surgery.

He has since returned to the field and quickly proven why he was such a highly rated teenage prospect.

Last weekend, the Phillip Island product was afforded his first full game in the midfield with the Lions Reserves, and was listed among the side’s best.

Sam Docherty has been named on an extended interchange bench for the game against the Eagles :thumbsu:

Good Luck Sam, hope you get a run!
Yep, Good Luck Sam.
Looks like he is still wearing his Phillip Island Bulldogs mouth-guard.

Sam was virtually guaranteed to play seniors this week as soon as his dad joked with a few ressies watchers at the Suns game that he wouldn't mind if Vossy waited another week (to save the long haul across country to watch him). :D

We are looking a lot better for small defenders than small forwards at the moment. Might be worth seeing how Docherty goes in the forward 50.

I think his main assets would be wasted down there because they could be utilised far more in other areas of the ground!

What are these main assets that can be utilised far more in other areas of the ground?

Docherty was similarly influential, his 35 touch, 3 goal game continuing the youngster’s strong run of form since being shifted into the midfield.

The no.12 Draft Pick won the contested ball in the centre square, exchanged handballs with Cal Bartlett, and launched a 50 metre goal at full pace under pressure.
