Sam Docherty

Lions.com.au caught up with Sam Docherty (from Phillip Island in country Victoria) to hear about his first impressions of the city of Brisbane.

"I’m loving it up here. My first impression was that Brisbane was just a massive country town.

I wouldn’t say it’s been a lot warmer than Melbourne, because when I spent time back at home over Christmas, it was stinking hot down there.

But Brisbane has almost perfect weather. The city is great, and I actually really enjoy being up here.

I moved in with a host family and have settled in really well there. They are terrific to live with."

AFL Prospectus 2012

Docherty was an excellent performer across half-back for Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup last season, averagin 22 disposals, winning the second most intercept possessions per game behind fellow 2011 draftee Matthew Buntine, and ranking fourth in the competition with an average of five rebound 50s per game. He played two games for Vic Country at the 2011 Under 18 Champs, standing out in his two performances by averaging the second-most Champion Data ranking points of any defender and eight intercept possessions per game.

Josh Drummond

Comment From Bato
Hey Drummo! Who has most impressed you this pre-season?

Of the younger guys, Sam Docherty looks like he will have a great future with the club. Big goose Maguire has been one who has really taken himself to another level.

Comment From Wakey, Southport
It's been bad luck with injuries again already. Apart from JB, I PARTICULARLY MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE NEW YOUNG PLAYERS LIKE DOCHERTY AND ZORKO. aNY LIKELIHOOD OF THESE NEW FACES GETTING A LOOK IN BEFORE ROUND 1 ?

Yeh shame about the Captain going down but our list is actually in the best shape it has been for some time across the board. Docherty I believe will be playing next weekend as well.

The Lions Reserves will face the Gold Coast SUNS Reserves this weekend, in what will prove the final chance for some players to press for senior selection.

The side is also expected to be strengthened further, with Josh Drummond and first round draft pick Sam Docherty set to line-up for their first official matches of 2012.

"It will be a good test for us against Gold Coast," Clarke said.

"We're expecting that both Drummond and Docherty will be available to play, assuming they get through the week."

NEAFL Practice Match vs Gold Coast Reserves

The good news for the Lions was that both Drummond and Docherty got through the game unscathed and were able to gain some valuable match practice.

"Docherty was an 18 year-old playing his first game for a long time, but still showed some good things defensively. He's got some pace, and tried to take the game on when he got his hands on the footy."

"For both of those guys it was more about getting through unscathed, which we achieved."

"I came up here and about a week into being here I was in for hip surgery, which set me out for six weeks without being able to run. And now I think we're 14 weeks post op on Wednesday, and back into full training"

"When you first get up here it's a lot different to when you're at a TAC Cup club. It's all footy, footy, footy. Everything you do is about footy. In pre-season when I first started running it was three times a week. And it's just the intensity and the heat sorta' zaps you. You get home and go straight to bed. You wake up in the morning and it's a nice early morning again, and you're back doing it again. But it's part of your job and it's part of what you love so you can't really complain about it. A lot of other people are sitting in offices."

Matt Maguire

As for the Doc, he’s had some minor niggles but hopefully he'll be right this weekend and get some form in magoos.

can someone advise why docherty & zorko are not playing yet, both apparently are over their injuries, yet both are still yet to pull on the boots

outside of cal bartlett, these are the two most looking forward to seeing what they can do.

Docherty has played one reserves game, then picked up another niggle.

Good luck to Sam Docherty in his first game as a Lion in the reserves this week!

Worked his way into the game a bit yesterday. Provided a couple of nice, solid spoils, threw himself at a couple of aerial contests all while popping up every now and then with some of his famed rebounding.

Didn't dominate by any definition of the word but showed enough for a first game back to excite.

NEAFL Round 6 vs Morningside

One such highlight which will surely buoy fans came when 2012 No.12 draft pick Sam Docherty combined brilliantly with Dayne Zorko to ignite an attacking thrust.

Docherty spun on a dime, evaded two tackles, turned and speared a pass to Zorko who dived full-length and slid to complete the mark just outside the 50. Docherty was eased back into the action but still accumulated 19 touches.

First round draft selection Sam Docherty also returned from a couple of weeks on the sidelines to play a key role in the second half onslaught.

“Sam is, by nature, an attacking defender and probably got off to a bit of a scratchy start because he was still adjusting to the conditions,” Clarke said.

“But he ended up being very good for us and looks a real player.”

Jamie Charman: What about Sam Docherty. He was a round one draft pick. What are your thoughts on him?

Nathan Clarke: I think we've got to be a little bit patient with him. He's going well, but he's still a young man, playing against men for the first time. He does show good signs, he's got really good speed and his kicking skills are obviously elite as an 18 year old, so I think he won't be far away as well.
